  • Postseason Possibilities?

Does SDSU have a serious chance in playing in one of the three postseason basketball tournaments?

Currently, NDSU will be representing the Summit in the Big Dance. According to Jacks1, both IPFW and UNO have accepted invitations to play in the CBI tournament. So that puts the 1st, 2nd, and 6th place teams from the conference in a postseason tournament. I'd be surprised if the Summit gets a team placed in the NIT, since both of the top two teams from the regular season and the tournament have spots taken in the NCCA and CBI tourneys. During the last two years, the only connections we have with the NIT is Denver playing in it last year (not as a Summit team), and Oral Roberts playing in it in 2012.

I'd suspect that SDSU's best chance is in the College Basketball Invitational. During the last two years, both NDSU and Western Illinois played first round road games in that tourney. NDSU lost two close games at Western Michigan and Wyoming. Western Illinois was not as competitive against Purdue and Oregon State. IUPUI beat Hofstra in the 2010 tournament opener, and then lost to Princeton at home in 2OT in the second round. I don't believe any other team has played in that tournament.

So what are your thoughts? Is the season done? If not, which postseason tourney will we get a chance to play in? Will Denver get a shot?

It might have been a typo but I believe Omaha and IPFW are playing in CIT not CBI.

The KC Star reports that Mo. State will host a CIT game vs. Murray State next Wednesday.

      Sagarin has Jacks at #134 - 74.51, Mo. State at #151 - 73.40.

CBI seems to be a better tourney. Maybe we are waiting on that......

            .

Reading through wikipedia decription for each and making assumptions after reading them it goes NCAA, NIT, CBI and CIT in that order.

The CIT is a mid-major only tournament run by the college-insider, you have to be over .500 to qualify as well. I also believe it is cheaper to host games in the CIT. The CBI is run by the gazelle group and takes anyone, usually the field has a couple of high majors in it but not many high majors want to play in anything but the NCAA or NIT.

Klink did the radio coaches interview after the game Monday night. He said the NIT was a possibility , but that it most likely would be either the CBI or CIT . He said they had already had conversations with both. He made it sound very likely the Jacks would be in a post-season tourney.

Not sure how it all works, but if Omaha made the CIT I would think the Jacks are lock.

SDSU should have their choice of either tournament.

Getting back to me other post... It costs 35k to host a CIT game(in any round). In the CBI it is 35k for round 1, 50k for the second round and 75k for the semifinals and finals.

Does the host school get to keep all of the ticket money , or does the tournament get a %.

I think the tournament only gets the guarantee amount, anything beyond that the school keeps.

Not intending to start a whole Sioux Falls road/home game thing here. Just want to satisfy my own curiosity.

Once the T Denny Arena is complete, would hosting a CBI or CIT game in there be allowed by Summit rules? Or is the game required to be played in the host school's arena? How much would it cost to rent the Arena for a night if it was available? If the building could hold a bigger crowd, it could be easier to make more aggressive bids.

I'm not sure if one of these postseason games would draw well after the conference tournament being held a few weeks prior anyway.

I agree, which makes the rest of your post moot.

Looking at teams RPI's and records who played in the CBI its looking like SDSU will be in that post-season tournament. Bryant is the most comparable to SDSU this year. Their record last year 19-11 with an RPI of 158.
