    Re: New Rumor

Well, one thing's for sure, we're going to be young next year . . . Here's what I see we have coming back:

Scott, Weinig, Holdren, Beran, Green might be the starting 5 . . . definitely need to sign a big man or two, and we may need to go juco to get some additional maturity and leadership. Hokensen and De Jong will be the seniors . . .

    Point
    Landon Scott, 6"2" So
    Brady Hokensen, 6'0" Sr
    Luke Giever, 6'2" So
    Off Guard
    Jake Weinig, 6'5" So
    Andy Kleinjan, 6'3" So
    Matt Cadwell, 6'2" Fr
    Small Forward
Michael Loney, 6'5" RSF (I assume he's still around, he redshirted last year)
    Steve Holdren, 6'5" F
    Power Forward
    Joe Green, 6'7" So
    Matt Jones, 6'6" Jr
    (plus Juco/late signee?)
    Center
    Ben Beran, 6'7" So
    Jared De Jong, 6'11" Sr
    (plus Juco/late signee?)
    "I think we'll be OK"

      Re: New Rumor

Hey, Andy was a good player, but he didn't develop into the leader that I think most Jacks fans were looking for. I thought it was going to be Andy's team last year! I am disappointed that he isn't going to take on the challenge of going D1, but I wish him well in Mankato.

Matt Margenthaler recruited Andy to be a 'Rabbit, so it is natural that he would go there if he wanted to leave here.

My prediciton is the Jacks won't miss him that much. Just my humble opinion. Love the site by the way!

I doubt hes going anywhere. MSUM already has 17 players signed or coming back for next season, with three signed this year. Doesn't leave much for a full scholarship for moeller.

Old article on Moeller from Mankato, kind of interesting. He says no hard feelings. This is from mid-May.

All-Region Player Leaving SDSU, Transferirng to MSU
              Big-Time Switch
              Date: 5/13/2004

By Chad Courrier, Free Press Sports Writer [published by The Free Press, Mankato]

              File photo

South Dakota State guard Andy Moeller (right), shown defending Minnesota State's Jay Larson during the 2001-2002 season, said he will transfer to Minnesota State for his senior season.

MANKATO — Andy Moeller wants to have a successful senior basketball season, and with South Dakota State moving to Division I, he didn't see that happening at Brookings, S.D.

So pending the completion of paperwork, Moeller, a 6-foot-1 guard, is transferring to Minnesota State.

"I'm definitely excited," he said. "I get one more chance to compete for a Division II championship, and that's what I want."

Moeller, who said he has been released from his South Dakota State scholarship, has played in three regional tournaments, though the Jackrabbits have not advanced to the final four in either season. In Moeller's three seasons, South Dakota State went 73-20.

"I'm looking forward to fitting in there," he said. "I've won a lot of games at South Dakota State, and I'm looking forward to winning more."

Moeller, an all-region selection last season, averaged 17.6 points, shooting a school-record 41.1 percent from three-point range, making 85 of 207. He also made 59 steals, nearly two per game.

"(Defense and three-point shooting) are definitely my strengths," he said. "(Minnesota State coach Matt) Margenthaler and (South Dakota State coach Scott) Nagy have pretty similar philosophies so that should be OK."

Margenthaler, who recruited Moeller to South Dakota State when he was an assistant coach there, said he can't comment on potential transfers until he has a signed letter of intent. Moeller said he might be on campus late this week.

Other than Margenthaler, assistant coach Mike Schott was an SDSU graduate assistant, and Minnesota State graduate assistant Austin Hansen was Moeller's teammate for three years.

"There were no hard feelings (at South Dakota State)," Moeller said. "I have a lot of respect for coach Nagy, but this decision was best for me."

With South Dakota State moving to Division I, there will be a lot of travel, and likely a lot of losses, as the Jackrabbits play an independent schedule. Moeller, who would have been one of only two seniors returning with significant playing experience, wasn't looking forward to a season without reward.

"Next year will be the toughest (at SDSU)," he said. "It's my senior year, and I want something to play for."

Moeller will take the scholarship made available when freshman Kyle Marxhausen left the program. Margenthaler said Marxhausen has decided to leave Minnesota State for personal reasons.

Thanks for posting this. I have read references to this article on other boards but had never read it.  Good luck Andy.

It show character on Coach Nagy's part in that he allowed him to transfer without any objections. I was told during the Stan Marshall event, that SDSU does not issue press releases when some one leaves and it probably best to let it happen with out squaking.  : ;D

I think if SDSU was staying in the NCC and D2, maybe Coach would have put up more of fight to hang on to Andy.  Definitely a good player.

The D1 decision was not a student athlete decision so SDSU ADMIN hasto take that into consideration in making a release of the letter of intent.

Just an observation on one of Andy's quotes. He said, "I won a lot of games at South Dakota State." Maybe basketball has turned into an individual sport at MSU.

I noticed this also. I think Andy's motivation may be largely self-gain. Perhaps it will be better that he left?

                      Re: New Rumor

I think there are a number of things that are not reflected in the article. These things may never be for public consumption.

A skilled player is always valued by a coach such as Coach Nagy. Coach Nagy has his limits too. We know publicly of two incidents that involved drugs(alchohol is a drug). Could there have ben a third incident that we dont know about? If so I can see a lot of the motivation of moving on to Mankato.

Could Andy been able to afford a third incident at SDSU? Probably not. Its all speculation on my part, but it sure makes me wonder.

I dont have a problem with our adminstration being tough with our student athletes. They are special people, but the decorum that they have once they put on the uniform is major and affects all who have ties to SDSU with actions on and off the playing facility.

This exit is more than meet the eye, but maybe SDSU fans should focus on the future and not about Andy Moeller. Its his life and how he lives it is his business.

                        Re: New Rumor

As a group (I am guilty of it too) we have spent far to much time wondering about Andy. If he was not up for the challenge of D-I so be it. I wish him and his Minnesota State Mavericks nothing but the best.

Hopefully Andy feels the same about SDSU and our move to D-I. Today (July 1st) we offically became a D-I school. Let's not concern ourselves with what is going on a Div. below us. We have plenty of challenges of our own. It is much more fun to talk about the Butlers, San Diego States, and Manhattans of the world then to worry about why one guy wanted to stay D-II.

                        Go State! ;D

Let us withhold judment on Andy until we know all the facts surrounding his departure. They will most certainly trickle in over the coming weeks and months. He was a welcome part of our last three years of success. I for one wish him nothing but the best next year and all the years to come.

I really enjoyed watched Moeller. But, I'm going to pretend he simply used his eligibility up and is now safely in the past and we're moving on.

Good luck to Andy. As for why he decided to transfer, it distresses me to read some of the later posts that clearly are questioning his character. I didn't read any where the poster said that they knew Andy personally. I read Andy's quote and when you put in the context of the question asked, it tells you nothing about his personality or character.

Glad I found this forum, it is great. I can't wait for the next year!

Welcome 1stRowFANatic. Nice to have you on the board, glad you found us. Don't be to hard on the gang, I think Andy's decision came as a shock to many (myself included) and people felt a little betrayed. I think most are over it now and wish Andy the best.
