I just wish Mr. Shanks the best at UND.
As this was unfolding Carson stated several times that acceptance to the U of M was not a forgone conclusion. If you look at interviews with him when it was announced he would be going to the Gophers he usually started by saying acceptance to the university was the hang-up.

I'm not sure how their standards compare to other schools , but I know they have raised their requirements for admission in the past few years. Being in the middle of a metro area with no room to expand , they were at a point where applications for admission were much larger than the number they could handle on their campuses , so they became more selective. It could be a situation where they just don't add students other than in the fall.

UND is building a pretty nice program up there. Would be a great fit in the Summit.

That's a good spot for him. He's got a good friend from hs on the team and one of the ND assistants was his AAU coach growing up.

According to posts on Gopherhole , Shanks to Minnesota is basically a done deal pending acceptance to school which isn't expected to be a problem. Eligible a year from now.

    Tweets from Ryan James.
@RyanJamesMN: 7-ft-0 Utah State transfer Carson Shanks visited Minnesota yesterday and will be a Gopher guest tonight versus TAMUCC

@RyanJamesMN: Shanks visited with Coach Richard Pitino Friday during his visit. Shanks played for Prior Lake HS in Minnesota before heading to Utah St

@RyanJamesMN: He left the school wanting to be closer to home although Utah St really wanted him to stay. Other local D1s are showing interest too

Obviously it's just speculation, but Northern has a lot of really young big men both currently on their roster (a 6'10" true freshman, a 6'8" redshirt freshman, a 6'7" true freshman) and coming in for 2014 (a 6'6" 2014 signing who plays like a PF/C), so I'd imagine there might be other NSIC schools--if he goes D2, that is--that might have less competition if he wanted to jump in and ensure big minutes right away. From what I've read on a few different message boards (both D1 and D2 message boards), it seems like he's much more of a project big man than a ready-now kind of kid. I know everyone says you can't teach height, which is obviously true, but it sounds like he's a pretty stiff/rigid player without a ton of strength. On the flip side, I've never seen him play. It just seems like as basketball at the D1 level continues to evolve, you're better off being a long, fluid big man or a strong, power big--not necessarily stuck somewhere in the middle of stiff/deliberate but lacking power/muscle. For example, it sounds like with you guys that Dykstra and Larson both fit that power player role, but you've also got some fluid bigs (Devine, right? maybe Heemstra?... haven't seen enough of your games this year to know for sure) who can kind of complement those power styles. Plus Larson is athletic enough to probably fit both the fluid and power roles.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see where he ends up as far as D1 vs. D2 goes. It seems like a lot of the "close to home" D1 options for him seem to be fairly satisfied with recent recruiting classes (from what I read on message boards), so I'd imagine he'll need to hope for some outgoing transfers if he wants to end up at local D1. On the flip side, I could easily see him fitting in somewhere in the NSIC (like a St. Cloud, Moorhead, Concordia-St. Paul) pretty easily while also being able to avoid losing the last half of his redshirt year and half of an active year.

The one and only time I did see Buzz play was the Dist 11 championship in which you guys tipped the Volga Cossacks by a bunch. Being a Sinai fan, it was fun to watch the Cossacks get beat. Those days are gone for ever. Its sad Buzz is not around to see his grandson play wherever he chooses for his next stop.
