  • Re: Michigan GDT

I don't second guess Coach Nagy or his decisions. Apparently he felt this was his best match-up against a verty talented and youthful team. I really dont think any one on the bench could have done anything different. Talent-wise, we were not a good match. It was a good experience for those back next year.

I like what I've seen from Bittle the last few games, he plays unafraid, that is a beautiful thing. I think the person that needs to take the biggest step forward next year is Nagy. This is 2 straight years of being only 5 or 6 people deep. We lose 4 players next season, if we continue that short bench trend we are in deep sheet after next season. I get at our level we'll never go 10 deep, but we have to be able to develop our guys to go at least 8.
He said in the post game the Jacks will be deeper next year. As far as strategy and coaching, I'll go with the guy who has won 50 games that last two years five years into full D-1 transition. Some people forget how difficult that truly is.

I went and read the idiots on bisonville. Why do I even do that. They should stick to football, very few of them know anything about basketball. Self-inflicted and stupid of me.

While I don't disagree with your match up comment, it's apparent that Coach Nagy has felt this way in most every game over the past 2 seasons.

People will say Wolters struggled, but I'd disagree with that statement, first he played some of his best defense all year, and he got open shots for other guys, they just didn't fall. It happens, if White and Dykstra hit a few shots that rimmed out early, its a different game as the lane starts to pen up a little bit. I also thought the motion offense was ran poorly by others, seemed that everyone was watching Wolters and expecting him to make a play. That was my one huge concern with this team, when they struggled they didn't move and watched him play. Even in games where Wolters played well, the team didn't because of that factor. It will be interesting to see what occurs next year when they don't have Wolters to bail out the offense.

I do agree with 77 that the bench was utilized terribly the second half of the season. Maybe there is more too it, maybe he is sending messages, but there were way too many games this year where the starers played too many minutes, many times in games where they didn't need to.

I hated the match-up, I would have rather have been a 14 playing Marquette as I thought SDSU matched up much better to them. It sucks to lose first round, but its part of the business, would you rather be NDSU and half to lose to Western Michigan?

Looking much forward, for the program to get to the next level the program will have to develop better, since going D-I very few players have developed, they are either contributors right away or they sit on the bench their career or transfer. Scheduling will have to improve, especially the home schedule, and the big thing is getting on TV more. When SDSU plays NDSU or USD they should be on Keloland not Mid-Co. Exposure has been good, but it doesn't matter much if it isn't utilized. Its been a big change in 4-5 years though where now we would be debating whether or not all the coaches should be fired or if only a couple should be fired.

Looking at one thing next year on how successful the season will be is Dykstra, I think he needs to become a center who can go out and hit an outside shot, not a perimeter player who on occasion goes down low. Towards the end of the year he really improved, will be interesting to see how he continues to improve.

I think we will get there. Maybe not 12 but 9 could be done. Anything better than a 6 or at most a 7 man rotation. I think we are at a far better position than the Bison were after Woodside's class graduated. I think we have a good as shot at coming back next year with the Summit tourney in Sioux Falls.

This is a message board. That means we second guess everything and everybody. I think it's in the rules.

I did the same thing. I swore they lost last night to a nothing team in a nothing tournament.

I see there was a 13 vs 13 play in game this year. If you win, you can say you won a game in the NCAA tournament and you still get you shot at the #4 seed two nights later.

                    Any thoughts?
I'd much rather be in SDSU's position as the prime time game on CBS with the whole country watching. SDSU got an incredible amount of free publicity tonight.

Disappointing loss but still a great season. I'm sure Nagy is a great coach I'm not smart enough to criticize his game management. One of the problems I have with the short bench, is our ability to recruit. It seems this has been Nagy's modus operandi for some time. If I were a recruit I would want to play for a coach that gives me a real shot "on the court." I complained about this earlier this year and someone commented as the season progresses Nagy plays more people. I believe it's been just the opposite. I would not be a happy role player on this team I can guarantee you that.

This year the only reason I hesitate to agree with you is the amount of upper-classmen in the rotation. But I do agree with the statement and more so in the past seasons. Need a longer bench, need to get guys more experience, and show you play a deep bench. Roy Williams played 11 guys in multiple ACC tournament games. 11 doesn't need to be played but 8-9 can be done.

How could it be a good experience for the players who sat on the bench the last two minutes of the game. They should have a chance to dance also.

This is a red herring. Did the clock even stop the last two minutes? Michigan had the ball for most of it, running out the clock.

I see where you are coming from 77, but I don't think the "bench clearing" happens much at the D1 level. That is more of a high school state basketball tournament thing. Not disagreeing with you though.

Part of the reason may have been that there is 1 particular player that Nagy would not want to put on the court. I'm not sure he'll be back next season as he and Nagy do not see eye to eye.

My suggestion would be to contact Vandrovec and tell him to get on Nagy's *ss about why he had such a short bench this year and if he plans on doing things differently next year.

But wait a couple of days for Terry to get over the food poisoning or flu or whatever he said he was having today . . .
