Are all teams that are in the probationary period maybe down in that list too? Cause I see NDSU, UNC and Davis(Not sure when Davis moved up to D1). Just a thought. Not sure though.

          Re: Basketball Poll

I'm pretty sure the sagarin rankings are mostly related to last season's results this season's strength of schedule including conference rankings, etc. I may be wrong, but I believe the sagarin rankings are more akin to the BCS rankings in football. Thus, it's no big surprise that we'd be at the bottom with the rest of the convertees. Any word on when the mid-major poll is coming out? The website produced on this thread is still void of an updated poll. I would highly doubt any poll would have us in last place. There are many teams in D1 that we can easily handle and I doubt there is much argument about that.

This is pretty much correct. Sagarin and Massey are rankings, not polls, performed by complex calculations that only someone with a Master's in mathematics could understand. The preseason rankings are based on the previous year's performance, and Sagarin does not rank anything other than DI competition. Therefore, NDSU and SDSU basically have no history and are ranked at the bottom. Next year will probably see the same sort of rankings because of schedules filled with DI opponents (see UNC- even though they didn't do well- they played a lot of DII's, etc. ).

Oh well, only one way to go! (up) ;D ;D

              Re: Basketball Poll

A little more detail on the Sagarin computer rankings. Before the season starts, the ratings are historical primarily from the previous year. After a few weeks when there are enough games played to link all of the teams, the historical part is dropped and the ratings will be based strickly on the current year.

In order to be in the ratings, you have to play about 10-12 games against division I schools. None of the schools who are a year ahead of us in transition, Utah Valley, Cal Davis, Longwood and Northern Colorado played enough games last year to be listed in the ratings thus they like us and NDSU have no history. All "new schools" are given the same rating at the bottom of the list until we have played in games that count in their system. You note that the four schools that are a year ahead of us are listed alphabetically then we and NDSU are next also in alphabetical order. Since none of the six have any history in the computer calcualtions, we are all assigned the same score.

Watch the ratings about the first or second week of December and you will see some big changes as the history is dropped and only this year is counted. Next year we will stay approximately where we end this year so we won't be at the bottom at the beginning of the year. I think Sagarin's ratings is one of the best once you get into the season. It is updated each day during the season so you can see the effect of each game.

                Re: Basketball Poll

If you look at the USA Today Sagarin rating, it looks to me like nothing more than a SWAG. Let's face it, Sagarin has nothing to go on with SDSU (and NDSU for that matter)--he only does D-I, if I recall correctly. He's just collected up Longwood, UNC, UC Davis, Utah Valley State, NDSU, and NDSU and put them at the bottom of the chart. (It obviously sucks to be Arkansas-Pine Bluff.) Massey and others do everybody who plays college basketball.

I fully expect the Rabbits to finish the year ranked by Sagarin somewhere in the mid-200's. Anything 199 and above would be a fantastic year, and frankly, finishing in the 100's should be a team goal this year. We're here in the big time. Might as well try to make some noise.

                  Re: Basketball Poll

Sargarin was simply getting his spreadsheet ready for the season...setting up the columns and the forumulas and then waiting for the season to start. The important point: We're listed.

                      Re: Basketball Poll

I saw the Sagarin ratings passed off as "USAToday's Preseason Rankings" by some nimrod at USD who forwarded it to something like 60 people. I pointed out to the U grad who subsequently forwarded it to me that (1) it's the Sagarin Computer ratings and not a preseason ranking; (2) as a preseason computer rating it relies almost solely on historical data; (3) the ratings clearly state that they are based SOLELY on Division I basketball matchups; (4) the bottom listed teams have essentially no Division I basketball history and all share the same rating; (5) the ratings are essentially meaningless for a team without any historical data; and (5) the person who initially forwarded the info is an idiot.

If things go just right this year we will make an appearance in this poll.  However, we will be young and expectations need to be appropriate.  I'll be here this year and for years to come.  I ask the same of the rest of you.  No matter what happens or how critical I may be I support the Jacks until the end.  By the end, I mean my end.
