      A Manhattan story:

      Manhattan marches on

      Looking up after Flores

      BY SEAN BRENNAN
      DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Senior Peter Mulligan, now Manhattan's main scoring threat, goes to hoop in practice.

Bobby Gonzalez is trying his best not to look nervous. But for a guy who is in constant motion even on days when all is right with his world, it's hard not to notice that something is a little different this time.
At Manhattan, it's called Life After Luis Flores. And Gonzalez is trying to come to grips with his new reality.

"There have been a couple of days after practice when I've walked into my office and said, 'How are we going to score?' You just don't replace a guy like Luis Flores. I'm definitely worried."

Ten minutes later, Gonzalez seems more relaxed as he begins to wax about this season's version of the Jaspers. It will be a team with a decidedly different look. Gone is Flores, Dave Holmes and Jason Benton - the backbone of Manhattan's most recent successes. But Life After Luis does not necessarily mean lean times are ahead in Riverdale. Whereas in years past, when one or two productive seasons were usually followed by down years, Gonzalez has raised the profile at Manhattan, turning it into a solid mid-major program that has steadily built on its successes.

And they have been many in recent years.

The Jaspers are coming off a 25-6 season, their third straight 20-win campaign. In the past two years, Manhattan has gone 48-13 overall and 30-6 in the conference. The Jaspers have won two straight MAAC regular-season and tournament crowns and made two straight NCAA appearances. The Jaspers even made some national noise when they handled SEC power Florida, beating the Gators by 15 points in an opening-round game, before taking ACC heavyweight Wake Forest to the wire in Round 2.

But if you think you have heard this story before, the little mid-major school carving its name into the national basketball consciousness, you have. That school was Gonzaga. And Manhattan is using that as its road map. . . .

"Because of our success, we're now able to recruit a caliber of player we couldn't get involved with 3-4 years ago," Gonzalez said. "We feel the opportunity is here for us to not only grab our niche in the city but to become known more nationally.

"We're not running around saying 'We're the Gonzaga of the East.' But we're definitely trying to be that type of program. It is certainly a goal of ours."

OK, I am wearing the Jasper thread out but here is a little more.

        Manhattan Quick facts:

        What is a Jasper?

        http://www.gojaspers.com/main.cfm?area_id=27

The unique nickname of Manhattan College’s athletic teams, the Jaspers, comes from one of the College’s most memorable figures, Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C., who served at the College in the late 19th century. . . .

Off to the same start we had against Butler.  Steve described the Jacks as playing timid.  Come on State! Missing some easy shots. Playing pretty good half court D but giving up the 3s again.

          Go Jacks!  ;D

Final Score Manhattan 73 - SDSU 69.  Heck of an effort, free throws and the slow start really hurt us.  At one point in the first half Manhattan lead 24-6.  Free throws, according to the Jasper announcers, SDSU shot 5 for 12.  With that said really proud of the effort, we are going to be ok.  Nice job guys.

                            Go State!  ;D

Great effort. The way this team is rebounding, they're going to surprise somebody. Now if they could avoid spotting their opponents a 24-6 lead out of the gate.

Still, they should bring some newfound confidence to the upcoming games against Illinois-Chicago and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
