Indiana State with Larry Bird in 1979 was undefeated until the championship game. They were number 1 if I remember correctly

I'm certain Phi Slamma Jamma would have been ranked #1 as well before losing to NC State and again to Georgetown. Probably San Francisco when they won back to back titles in the 50s and would have been #1 in the AP poll; LaSalle also won in the 50s and would have been #1 in the AP poll. Loyola (Chicago) and UTEP (Texas Western) in the 60s won the title and would have been #1.

The 1983 Houston Cougars - "Phi Slamma Jamma" - wouldn't be mid-major. The Southwest Conference included Texas, Arkansas, Baylor, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech among others.

Good point. They are in Conference USA now so that's why I through them in. I agree tho.

After what my alma mater did to the Hoosiers last night , it looks like a mid-major will be the over-all # 1 next week !

In the for what is worth department, the Jacks go up 1 to #19 and the Leathernecks go to #20. The Bison are getting votes. Denver is #14 and our matchup from Montana is #13.

Next year is going to be a LOT of fun, with a good chance that anywhere from four to six Summit schools putting pretty good (top-half of D-I, or above #175) teams on the court. No wonder UMKC wanted to get out and into an easier league.

This year it's three upper-half teams (using Sagarin): SDSU, NDSU, and WIU, with Oakland being right there at #181 (upper-half cuts off this year at #174; WIU was #171). Ft. Wayne losing Gaines will be a big hole to fill. I think all of USD, Omaha, and IUPUI have the potential to be better next year than this year. (IUPUI at #327 and Omaha at #314 as of today's Sagarin can't get much worse.) UMKC is #313.

I wouldn't consider the WAC to be an easier conference. The present conference ratings (http://realtimerpi.com/rpi_conf_Men.html) has the WAC in 13th and the Summit in 19th.

Classic troll post - or maybe just ignorant. Clearly this year's WAC and next year's WAC have very little in common except a name.

I would ask you to reconsider 1 year from now as you look at the vacanies that have or will be created in the WAC. you may also notice that Denver will not be in those numbers next year and the Roos will not be in ours. The biggggg flip plus others that are leaving the WAC in the next year and 2.

Check on who will be in the WAC next year and get back to us.

Hint: There's a very good reason why Denver jumped from the WAC to the Summit.

I question the relevancy of your consideration. The discussion as it pertains to UMKC refers to the WAC they will join not the current WAC, therefore the current RPI is of questionable relevance to this discussion.

Perhaps we should give him a break, maybe he's a UMKC administrator, and just doesn't know that the WAC is on more serious life support than the Mid-Con/Summit ever was.

I stand corrected, my apologies. I was merely stating this year. Again, my bad.

FYI, With next year's memberships and this year's team RPIs, as of today, using the RealTimeRPI numbers, the Summit League would be #14 in RPI, the WAC would be #28.

Four of the top 5 teams in the WAC are leaving after this year.
