    Re: Denver

I cannot wait for the game vs. Denver. It will be my first experience watching the Jacks this year. I am meeting up with some former Brookings Residents so they will be a few JACK Fans for sure. Has anyone on the board heard of any pre-game gatherings for the game? Please post if you have. Thanks
Also for University of Colorado game later this year.
I will email the SDSU Alumni Center and post if they are.
    Go Jacks!

SDSU basketball still figuring out Division I

Guard play a problem for men

If the talent level ever catches up with the ambitious schedule Scott Nagy put together this year, South Dakota State's men's basketball squad could make strides toward becoming a mid-major power.

That future's not now, though. As SDSU takes on the University of Denver at 7 p.m. today in Denver, Nagy's depleted roster will wrap up a grueling early-season schedule of Division I opponents that has included recent postseason teams like Marquette, Manhattan and Illinois-Chicago.

"Obviously, we're undermanned. Offensively, we don't play with a lot of confidence, and it's my fault," Nagy said of his 1-6 Jackrabbits. "Nobody in the country right now has played the schedule we have, and we still have another road game. We had seven of eight on the road to start the season. With our transition, if we wanted to play Division I games, we had to do that. And it's really unfair to our kids, because I think it's hurt their confidence a little bit."

Backcourt play has especially been an up-and-down affair for the Jackrabbits - in large part due to the limited number of bodies they have at the guard spots. No better examples illustrate this than the two games SDSU played six days apart in Milwaukee.

On Dec. 1 against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the frontrunner for this season's Horizon League title, the Jackrabbits were decimated by the Panthers' full-court, blitzing defense. The result was an 88-54 hammering at the U.S. Cellular Center where SDSU turned the ball over 22 times.

In Tuesday's contest against Marquette at the Bradley Center, the Golden Eagles lacked some explosiveness from the point with Travis Diener's ankle injury visibly slowing him. That allowed SDSU to stick with one of the top teams in Conference USA for the first 30 minutes before eventually succumbing 76-60.

The Jackrabbits turned the ball over just 14 times against Marquette, but there were clearly issues with their guard play. When Nagy deployed the 2-3 zone defense he has used increasingly this year, Marquette was able to create open shots with crisp passes and quick ball rotation. SDSU's Brady Hokenson and Luke Geiver, playing almost the entire game, didn't have the lateral quickness to recover defensively, and Marquette drained 10 of 25 from beyond the arc. Thirteen of its 23 baskets in the game came from jump shots outside of the paint.

"It's different because (UW) Milwaukee plays differently because of their press," Nagy said while comparing the two opponents. "We're just so undermanned at this point, with some of the decisions we've made for our basketball team in the future. It makes it that much more difficult for us, because we're not that deep and we're playing against a pressing team. Our guards struggle with that."

Hokenson and Geiver are probably playing above their heads right now when you consider how little help they have on the bench. Andy Moeller's transfer, Andy Kleinjan's injured foot and Matt Cadwell's redshirt season leaves inexperienced freshman Mackenzie Casey as the only other true guard on the roster.

Between them, Hokenson and Geiver combine to average 11 points and just over four turnovers a game - a low number of give-aways for a backcourt combination. However, neither player is a strong outside shooter, and Nagy's usually up-tempo offense has been reduced to a crawl - though some of that is because of the young, talented low post players SDSU boasts. . . .

The Hokenson-Geiver combo will be again tested tonight, this time against the 3-2 Pioneers. Senior Rodney Billups, younger brother of NBA Finals MVP Chauncey Billups, runs the point for Denver and averages 8.2 points a game with a team-high 28 assists. His backcourt partner, 6-foot-1 senior Erik Benzel, is averaging 14 points a contest, shooting 47 percent from 3-point range.

Junior Yemi Nicholson, a 6-10 center, leads Denver with 16.2 points and 8.2 rebounds a game.

      Go State! ;D

Gametracker is unbelievable!! Jacks with 15 TO's, Denver 4-8 from 3-point line. Tough to win with 15 TO's in one half.
