Michigan Tech. has been a quality D-II team for a long time. They are currently ranked #19 in D-II.  This will be a good test.  Here is the MTU web site:

Why is this board so quiet tonight. I thought the Jack men showed a lot of heart tonight, battling back from 19 down to make a game out of it. I didn't go, but I heard some updates. How big of a crowd was there? I think State will build on their 2nd half performance tonight and go down and beat Tenn. St. Even though that game will be on the road Tenn. St. is not as good of a team as Mich. Tech. Good luck Rabbits.

The crowd was just over 1,800, but with the students all gone, that's not so surprising. Once again, we got beat from the 3-point line.

I was at the game.  Enjoyed the women's game and then the men's game was a little disheartening.  I can't remember the last time we were down by a lot at home.  I hope sports_buff is right about tenn but I am beginning to think that we may not win a d1 game the entire year and this may not be our last d2 loss.  Mich Tech is a very good team though.  Games were enjoyable and it was a nice day but I must admit I enjoy it a little more when we get a "W".   The one positive is that coach nagy can go into a prospect's home and tell him if he is any good at all he is going to play right away.  Maybe that will convince some solid players to come our way.  Go Rabbits!!

Best remedy for the men's team would be a W. It would be interesting to know the last time the Jacks got off to a start like this. Any history buffs out there?? Hopefully the new year will get the guys some wins and the confidence will return.

The men are struggling more now then I've ever seen them in 20+ years of watching. Take inexperience and lack of depth and combine that with a probably-too-challenging schedule, and you've got a struggling team.

I'm still 100% behind them, however. Nagy sounds like he's got a good strategy in simplifying things and working on the basics. This year is going to be a learning experience not only for the players but the coaches and the fans as well.

Speaking to those in attendance, what is the PROBLEM!!!! I was at the game and the crowd was absolutely dead, even when the Jacks made their 2nd half run to get it under 10. I (yes, me, mild-mannered Filbert) had to start numerous "DEE-FENSE" and "LET'S GO RABBITS" chants, because nobody else was. The crowd needs to learn how to be a factor in the game again . . . it's easy to cheer when things are going well, we need to step it up now, if nothing else to show the guys that we aren't going to give up on them. And sure, the students weren't there, but us old fogys can yell, too!

I was cheering, but maybe not loud and often. I do think we need a new cheerleading coach.  These cheerleaders stand at the end and do cheers that are barely audible and then when they do, its kind of goofy stuff like, "Yellow and Blue, S.D.S.U. or Defense get that  ball.  Not to pick on these kids, but they need to start thinking about how to get the crowd in the game from that disadvantage place that they are standing during the game.

The usual court side fans who tend to be vocal are all kind of quiet this year. Dont know why, maybe its the way the schedule has worked, and maybe they like everyone else is spoiled, and dont know how to cheer for a struggling team.

I like you am still behind the team.  I think sooner or later you going to see Joe Green and Ben Beran start to step up as leaders and show their true stuff.  Last year these two looked like D1 transfers from Drake.  Maybe this year has not been the fun that it was last year as true freshman, but its a growing process.  I guess need to be patient. Steve Holdren seemed to be the leader and thats not the way it should be since he is a true freshman, and some of the others have one or more seasons under their belts. People are playing scared as Coach Nagy said in the post game show.

Although we played these guys three years in a row, this was the first time I seen us play Mich Tech.
Thanks to Coach Nagy's comments about Mich Tech, you could see and tell that this is one of the best programs in D2. Because of the technical course of study at Mich Tech, most of these athletes probably have high GPA's. Kevin Luke the coach is darn good as a coach too, and he made sure they had control of the game. I think in football and basketball, which ever team has the momentum or controll of the game usually wins.  

The athletic ability was not that superior, but with a good coach and smart kids, you can hard one to beat.

This is one time when I think Coach Nagy should be down on himself, but sooner or later he too will have a revelation on how to get these young and talented kids going. It cant only getter better.

I don't think this has ever happened and I don't think whats happening is that big of a suprise. When I saw this team play Mayville St. I knew they would have a hard time defeating any quality teams regardless of division. Even Mayville had no trouble finding open shots and defending, especially our backcourt guys. I've said it before and I'll say it again, any win against a DI team (NDSU included) is not a given for this team. They have struggled in every game thus far and will continue to struggle. They just don't have enough talent. Teamwork and hustle can only make up for so much. Its still inexcusable not to defend the 3-point line.

1964-65 was a real ugly season, because of a incident that caused a coaching change in the middle of the season. I not going into details, here on this board because it involves things that are long forgotten and should be kept that way.

The incidents occurred just at the start of the conference play and we lost a bunch of games. This was two years after NC, and the cupboard in terms of experience talent was bare, and we again had a bunch of new guys. If there is a commonality here its the lack of experienced talent. These squads at SDSU are few and far between.

I think the highlight of the 64-65 season was beating USD in the final game at the Barn. It was such a frustrating season, that one thing I do remember was some us students took it out on USD and pelted their team during a timeout with apple cores. Long time ago, but apples were then sold at the Barn. No technicals for throwing and yes that was probably the worst student behavior that I witnessed as a student at SDSU.

Most reasonally, one of Jim Thorson's seasons ended in 8-20 win loss record and there were several new players including JUCO's who did not fit in. Cullun Ober the big guy from Glencoe MN was lost for the season at game in UNO, and what ever else that could go wrong did go wrong that year. So there have been some tough seasons before. We hope they dont happen but they do.

Chusby - what a hypocrite. You have had numerous posts where you criticize both the U and Augie fans for throwing items on the court. Now you are bragging about throwing items at players. Are you a fan of the Pistons?

No technicals for throwing and yes that was probably the worst student behavior that I witnessed as a student at SDSU.

The Michigan Tech game was another game we failed to defend the 3. I think it could be a combination of our athletes not moving their feet quick enough to get out and get at least a hand in the face and defensive philosophy that we will defend the shot in the paint and dare them to beat us from outside the arc. If we run up against a team that can shoot like Michigan Tech we are going to have problems with this current cast of players.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, I think its a part of the Nagy philosophy that has to change. We need to defend the 3 even more now that we have moved up a division. When a team starts burying 3's it not only increases point production it gives them confidence and can demoralize the defenders. If we would have defended the 3 better in the past, there would have been at least 2 more elite 8 appearances for SDSU/Nagy teams.

If I had a nickel for every time in the Nagy years we have traded their three for our two, I'd be a rich man.

Actually, it can work. Iowa has a similar philosophy, based on rebounding and getting to the foul line more often than the opponent (and making those shots). The Jacks are not rebounding very well lately, though. And in the foul-game, the more athletic team usually gets the benefit of foul calls. Needless to say, we're not the more athletic team this year.
