    November

South Dakota State's sagging Division I fortunes take a stunning turn when the Jackrabbits receive an unsolicited invitation to immediately join the Southeastern Conference.

When the men's basketball team falls by only 40 points at Rupp Arena, Kentucky coach Tubby Smith uses adjectives such as "courageous" and "well-mannered" to describe Scott Nagy's squad. Back home, the blowout loss is quickly hailed as one of the greatest moments in SDSU athletic history.

I know he is making fun of state but i would love to go to the SEC.  Have a good New Year

Whitney is a pinhead. In Sioux Falls, that's a well-known fact regardless of his opinion of SDSU and their move.

Stu enjoys stirring things up. That's his role, like Patrick Reusse of the Star Tribune. It's all in good fun. Stu is really a very nice guy.

Am I correct in thinking that Stu Whitney is one of the more senior people in the Sports Department at the Argus? What I dont understand is why he is given all the high school coveage jobs and only occasionally does he do Augie stuff. What is Stu's background in terms of union cards aka as academic degrees?

I think Stu (like Chris Solari) is a Michigan State graduate. I know he wrote a book about MSU football that was published in 1990. Stu has been at the Argus for many years and was there when I worked there. If I had to guess, I would say he started at the Argus in about 1990. There are only six people on the Argus sports staff and Mick Garry has the USD beat and Chris has SDSU. Otherwise, they all just do what's needed, general assignment stuff and even page layout and copy editing. Stu also is a columnist, which means he's not on a specific beat.

FYI: His book was titled Behind the Green Curtain: The Sacrifice of Ethics and Academics in Michigan State Football's Rise to National Prominence.

            OK Rabbit:
Thanks for the information on Stu. That is what I was looking for. Since he is a non-South Dakota, then I can understand how he enjoys getting people worked up especially when it strikes a cord of passion.

I had the feeling that he was not a big SDSU fan, but thought he might have connections to Augie and/or USD.
That not being the case, I will find myself reading his columns more often. Sounds like an interesting book he authored and now I can see why he was assigned to that series on high school recruiting that was published this past fall.
