Schlagel scores 19 for SDSU in win over program from Big 12 Conference
STILLWATER, Okla. - The South Dakota State women's basketball team picked up another win over a major conference opponent Thursday.
The Jackrabbits hit 14 3-pointers in an 89-61 victory over the Big 12's Oklahoma State at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The victory improved SDSU to 10-4.
Earlier this season, SDSU captured its first-ever Division I victory by beating Kentucky. The Wildcats play in the Southeastern Conference, commonly known as the SEC. The SEC and the Big 12 are two of the elite basketball conferences in the country. However, Oklahoma State and Kentucky are not the national powers the men's programs at those schools are. Oklahoma State was picked to finish 12th out of 12 in both the coaches and media preseason Big 12 polls. . . .
OSU took early 5-0 and 7-2 leads, but SDSU went ahead for good at 9-7 behind some three-pointers. SDSU led by as much as 11 in the first half.
Dickmeyer hit back-to-back threes and Schlagel followed with a layup putting SDSU ahead 52-40 two minutes into the second half, and the Jacks pulled away from there.
Taleesha Conder led OSU with 16. OSU shot 47 percent from the field.
SDSU, now 4-4 against Division I competition, plays at Middle Tennessee on January 3 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Jacks' next home game is Jan.22 against North Dakota State.
One last note . . . of OSU's previous four losses, the worst defeat was a 9-pointer at Memphis.
This was not a bad women's team that SDSU drubbed by 28 on their home floor. They're picked last in the Big XII, but that's a very, very good women's bb league with four teams currently in the top 25.
When I read that score in the paper I was amazed that we could beat a Big12 team by that wide of a margin. Made my day. Makes up for some of the disappointments lately we have had with men's bb and the bsc. But I always remember that football exceeded expectations and so has most of our women so things are looking up. Go Jacks!! Great win over Okie State.
It's probably a long shot, but these women sure as hell deserve a hard look from the women's NIT.
Agreed on both points, long shot but deserving. Anyone have more info about the women's NIT? Can't say as I know anything about it, in fact, I didn't even know there was such a thing.

We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.
NDSU is probably not listed due to the fact they havent played many D1 games. Most of their opponents this year are D2 and NAIA. I'm not positive if this is the reason but I'm assuming so. As far as the women's NIT goes I doubt we could participate in it, this being the transition year and all. I know there are some people on this board that could answer this question.
when coach johnston was at the mitchell quarterback club a month ago, i dont remember for sure but i thought he said they would be eligible in two yrs for the NIT. but dont quote me on that one
Since the NIT is not controlled by the NCAA, but may be sanctioned and approved for members to participate, the Big Dance rules dont apply, but I think AJ may have been trying to be realistic and feels that more success and exposure is needed to get the invite. I would love to see an invite come this year, but maybe thats more than we can expect. I have no offered my congraduations to the Jack Women, for this big win. so congrads and upward and onward. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I don't know if we are eligible or not this year. All I know is that
1. if the women can win out the rest of the season,
and
2. if it is within the rules to do it
I believe the committee will have to give serious consideration to SDSU. That is a couple of big if's, but even a long-shot chance gives them something to shoot for?
Someone said once that fan support is part of the formula?

NDSU only has 4 or 5 DI games scheduled this year, 2 of those are against us, one against TCU and one against Cincinnati. This does not constitute a DI schedule and therefore they are not part of the RPI.

Received this via my e-mail. Not sure the guy realized we're now DI. Never the matter, still flattering for the Jacks women.

Wife Patty, Joe Shirley and I journeyed to Stillwater last Thursday to see Alva's Taleesha Conder in action and to get a first-hand view of the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. They were playing the Jackrabbits from South Dakota State University, a traditional powerhouse in Division II women's basketball.
The Jackrabbits were not at all awed by the magnificent Gallagher-Iba Fieldhouse nor the Cowgirls, as it turned out. SDSU has now played eight Division I schools this year and whipped four of 'em, including our Cowgirls last Thursday to the tune of 89-61.
Taleesha had a pretty good game, playing every minute until she was pulled out with a little less than three minutes to go. By that time the game was totally out of hand and Coach Goodenough was giving the bench some experience.
Our former Ladybug hit seven of 13 shots in the game and led the Cowgirls with 16 points. Unfortunately, no other Cowgirl managed to get to double figures while the visitors put four players in the twin-digits column and got additional scoring from four other players. The sad part was that the Lady Jacks outran, out-hustled, out-shot (55.7% - 47.2%) and out-played the Cowgirls from start to finish.
O-State was slow in transition, did not defend well on the perimeter(the Lady Jacks canned 14 of 32 treys) and were badly out-rebounded (37-20) at both ends of the court. If this game was an indication of their overall ability, then one has to wonder who the Cowgirls are going to beat in Big Twelve competition, which is coming up very soon. Yes, SDSU was a very good Division II school, but this game would have to be classified as an embarrassment to a D-I program.
For the record, though, Taleesha hit two of five three pointers, five of eight inside the arc, had four rebounds, two assists, one steal and two turnovers. She did not get a chance at the free-throw line. A pretty good performance, but the Cowgirls need a much more balanced effort. It was good to watch her in action again, though. Keep up the good work, Taleesha
