Re: Jake Wenig leaves the team

The first defections and they won't be the last. Defection to lower divisions or within DI are not at all uncommon. I wish both of these young athletes the best of luck and respect the fact that they have informed the coaches of their wishes well ahead of the recruiting push.

I agree with the Doc on this one. Now that we are D-I players have a viable option if they are unhappy with their present circumstances. They can drop down to D-II and don't have to sit out a year. This was not the case when we were D-II (they would have had to go to no scholarship D-III or NAIA). It is something that will happen from time to time.

Thanks to both for their efforts and best of luck in the future.

I wonder what he wasn't happy with (besides being injured and on a losing team).

Pure speculation, but if you look at who will be coming on next year, maybe the outlook for minutes in ‘05-‘06.

Could be anything, I suppose: Academics, athletics, personal. These are 20-year-old kids. I wish him the best. He gave us some good minutes last year.

I'm regretful that Isha is leaving as I was very impressed with her abilities and on court presence. I imagine it's playing time.

Heard from a little birdie that Isha is unhappy about playing time. She seems to have a chip on her shoulder if you ask me. She is a freshman and was averaging near 10 minutes a game on a very good team that has very good guard play. Seems to me we shouldn't be sad to see her go with that attitude if this is the case.

If this is the reason Isha left-good riddance. I thought she was playing a lot of minutes for a Freshman at SDSU. I have listened to almost all of the games so far this season and thought she had a bright future. One thing that is special about our WBB teams is they always seem to get along and know their roles. Did she want to be starting ahead of Brooke or Heather? sorry this is posted under the Wenig thread.

I dont know if this has bearing on answering the question or not, but I do know that one of Justin's aunts is a SDSU grad as are many of the Little family including his father I believe, and one of his aunts is married to Chad Lavin USD women bb coach.  I am sure he did have interest in SDSU, but from Justin's aunt Lorna who is an SDSU alum and now SDSU employee, she told that her nephews were unhappy with SDSU going D1 and not being able to play for a NC.  His aunt, Lorna Jost started an Anti-D1 petition on campus. I exchanged emails with her and she told me that the big reason for her starting the petition was the fact that her two nephews would end up being Coyotes and she had hoped they would be Jacks.  Whether anything was offered by SDSU, I dont know.  The point is, Mr. Little is in Vermillion and playing for his NC, that he wanted to play for. Now can we all be happy that he (Mr. Little) is happy?

Re: Jake Wenig leaves the team

I am so tired of trying to figure out why student athletes leave SDSU.  I said this before, BUT will say again, student athletes have private lives and I think we SDSU fans make the mistake especially the BB programs of making them into a bit of a celeb when in fact they are not that much different than the nearly other 11,000 students on campus. They have issues and opportunities in their lives and sometimes these issues  in their lives start to make participation in varsity sport become a lower priority.

Nobody has asked me why I flunked Introduction to Literature over 40 years ago. Unless I showed you my transcript, no one would know. Why do I know mention this? Well I am not looking for work and I have to admit being a non-student athlete, I have had privacy for the past 40 years.

Maybe we need to think of these people as ordinary students and allow them some privacy.

I know this much I am glad I am 63 and not 18, 22 or even 42, life is not getting any easier.

I tend to agree with you. What's to figure, anyway, really? They make decisions, same as the rest of us, for the same reasons. Some decisions are really, really good, some aren't, some really don't make a difference either way.

Best thing we as fans can do is smile and wave and say "good luck." Anything else is, well, immature. And who knows, in 20 years when their kids are looking for a school, one of these who got away might sit their kid down and say "you know, I've always kind of regretted not going to/staying at SDSU . . . they always treated me first-class all the way."

That's what I hope we aspire to.

So, Jake and Isha, good luck to you, I hope yours are two of the really, really good decisions. Only time will tell.

Re: Jake Wenig leaves the team

I realize Wenig did not possess the speed or quickness to some of the guys he was up against last year, but I noticed that (based on the minutes he got) he showed great court awareness. Sometimes he would throw a pass inside to one of our big guys (no look) and we weren't ready for it. He could have had a lot more assists as a result, that's for sure. He could get hot from behind the arc, too, as was mentioned.
