  • Jake Wenig leaves the team

I noticed on the Jan 3rd update for San Diego State game that Jake Wenig did not return to the team following the Christmas Break. Jake is a heck of a shooter but does not possess much quickness. He was a clutch shooter in high school and hit many big shots and some consider him to be one of the best shooters to come out of Iowa. I wonder if the constant injuries finally got to him or maybe he sensed lack of playing time when he finally returned next year.

I guess nobody cared that Jake left the team?

He's still on the SDSU roster/web site. What Jan. 3 update are you talking about? My understanding was that he might take a medical redshirt this year--frankly, that's what I'd do if I were him this year.

Since he has a medical redshirt (hardship) his name may not appear on the active roster now that the new semester has begun. (I'm just guessing on that) We need some more facts here.

Go to the Mens Basketball Website to latest news. go to Jan 3rd Mens Basketball Release. Under the Redshirt heading it says: WENIG LEAVES TEAM-Sophmore Jake Wenig did not return to the team after the Christmas Break...Just because you redshirt you are still part of the team so he is essentially is AWOL and left his team.

Its on the January 3rd Media release on the website, it sounds like he left for good. If he was planning on returning/redshirting (which they had already announced that he was redshirting i believe) i would think they would have mentioned that. This is a pretty big blow for the team as he was probably our most consistent outside shooter in the little time he played last year.

Unfortunately at this level and specifically our transition into DI I think we will see more roster movements than we are acustomed to. Fortunately there are a lot of good players out there who are looking for a home!

Sad to see him go but this isnt a disaster. This means we can bring in another scholarship player next year.

Ah, found it! Sorry to be dense . . .

We'll probably get the real story when the spring semester starts. As Texas points out, if he's gone for good, that's one more scholarship to give for next year.

If I had to guess (and I do, 'cause I don't know diddly) I'd say that there are two possibilities (basically already covered by jackguyII): 1) his foot problem is worse than everyone thought and his doctor said no way jose to playing bball, and/or 2) he looked at next year's lineup and didn't like the odds of getting minutes at the 3 spot with Holdren, Loney, and Gilbert in front of him.

                      1) is a big bummer, 2) is too, I guess. Whichever, I wish him well (even if he winds up at USD ;-), he can definitely shoot the ball.

Rumor out of Vermillion is that Wenig will not be attending USD. He is too fat and out of shape. How much does he weigh? Rumor has it that he put on between 20-40lbs. USD did want him out of high school, but now have no interest. USD is much better off with Dustin Little of Castlewood who was offered a full ride by SDSU.

Little was offered a full ride? Can someone substantiate this claim?

Did Coach Nagy and Coach Johnson comment on the recent departures of Wenig and Vanterpool from the team on the Jackrabbit Report yesterday. I saw our favorite talk show host lurking on the site today and since he is always on top of things he can enlighten us.

Wenig, Vanterpool looking elsewhere for basketball

The first Division I defections have hit the South Dakota State basketball teams.

Huron native Isha Vanterpool left the women's team during Christmas break, while sophomore Jake Wenig did not return to Brookings from Iowa after the holiday for the second semester.

Wenig, a 6-foot-5 sophomore forward, took a medical redshirt this year while dealing with recurring foot problems he suffered in the postseason last year. In 2003-04 as a freshman, he played in 30 games averaging 18.4 minutes, 7.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists.

He said he has been released from his scholarship and plans to play somewhere else next year.

"I know I can still play ball," the Danville, Iowa, native said. "I really wasn't too happy with a lot of things. I had pretty much decided that I wasn't going to play for SDSU next year."

Men's coach Scott Nagy did not return a call on Wednesday.

Vanterpool, a 5-9 guard, declined comment on the situation while awaiting release from her scholarship, though she did say she hopes to continue her basketball career. She is enrolled at SDSU for the spring semester.

SDSU coach Aaron Johnston is in Alabama with the team and could not be reached for comment.

Senior guard Stephanie Bolden returned from a broken hand Monday against Middle Tennessee State, her first action since Nov. 26 against Kentucky. Her return should help ease the Jackrabbits' short-term loss of Vanterpool, who was playing well in 10 minutes per game. The freshman averaged 4.2 points and 1.5 boards in her 12 games while shooting 50 percent from the floor.

Senior Shannon Schlagel moved into second place all-time in women's basketball scoring after dropping 26 points against Middle Tennessee State. The 6-foot forward from Raymond entered Wednesday's game with 1,696 points, just 52 points from bypassing former teammate Melissa Pater for the school record. ... The SDSU wrestling team leaves today for the Oregon Classic in Redmond, Ore. The Jacks, coming off a month-long break after beating Princeton in Brookings, will face two Division I opponents at the duals. Other Division I schools include Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, Cal Poly and Portland State.
