  • The Great Frost Arena Crowd

I attended the Buffalo game and when I returned home, I watched the DVR of the game. I thought the students did a great job – the atmosphere was vintage Frost Arena.

I pondered whether the student crowd can develop some unique cheers. I’ve read about the Duke student crowd having some pretty funny cheers, like “We beg to disagree” when a ref’s call is disputed. Another cheer is “Push It” with the students moving their arms like they’re pushing a heavy object—in a large crowd, “Push It” sounds like “Bull S*#!” – but, who can complain?

I’ve been in a crowd in which students politely applauded and many yelled “Nice Call” in what sounded like an approving voice to a ref who clearly made a terrible call against the home team – even saw a ref break out in a smile and chuckle. He got the message.

Was it halftime of the ORU or the SUU game, when Jack stumbled around the court wearing dark glasses, a ref’s striped shirt and carrying a white cane with a red tip? It was a nice example of college humor.

How about the crowd picking out a particular song and everybody doing the Bernie Dance?
For an example, check out this Youtube clip of a flash mob doing the Bernie Dance in SDSU's Student Union: LINK.

From Weekend at Bernie's II: here's the original moving like Bernie (Bernie Lomax, brought back to life during a botched voodoo ceremony, joins in a conga line in the US Virgin Islands): LINK

Did sdsu try something like that for cheers with the rabbit den reader or something. Well at least the bernie is better then the dougie. That was bad.

A mass of students in the stands all doing the Bernie Dance would be hilarious. Y'all students have GOT to get together and do it--or something even better. Work on it, m'kay?

And, creativity in crowd-sourced chants/cheers is always a good thing. (Over on the Old Fart side, some of us LOVED the "STANDING!!! STANDING!!!" part of the Left-Right 5-Foul Serenade, and yeah I know that's not precisely spontaneous, but youse students peoples have to understand that for the Old Farts, you're part of the entertainment of the game, too.)

(I'm not as offended as some by the "bullsh!t" chant, but if some witty student can come up with something better, that would be among the really good things in life.)
      "I think we'll be OK"

It would be cool to use the" Cough" code word that is used in Terry's Argus blog. the whole student section standing and saying cough on a bad call or bad foul.

I'm just going to leave this here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcvAO...eature=related

Duke doesn't have the best fans.

One thing I think would be cool would be to have the students (and everyone else) sing the school song. Get 5 groups of 5 kids from the choir and have them sit in different parts of the student section and belt it out at the top of their lungs whenever the band plays it. Might be enough to get that going.

Follow that link to youTube and you will see a fun cheer for the crowd to do towards any of the more animated coaches in the league. This comes from a game Between Rapid City Central and Stevens. Just make sure to watch the students across from the bench. Would be tough to do from behind a coach, but would be funny if you could get the whole student section cheering together.

I'm a student at Castlewood and a huge Jacks fan. Our student section copied the coach from DeSmet. Had the whole gym laughing. Very effective to get people in the game

This is inspired. Especially like the song at the end.

IMHO mimicking the opponent's coach's movements is "high-school." Very cool, but high-school.

College kids can and should do better than that.

I think mimicking the opponents coach is alright but you can only do it once a year, and only for an opposing team who has a coach you can do it with. If the coach sits on the bench for 90% of the game its not that fun. But if you have one that paces up and down, yells, stomps, screams, makes hand gestures then I think it'd work.

At last night's game against Western Illinois, the students (with the band doing more than its fair share) did a great job of raucous laughing a few times when a WIU player was called for a foul and when WIU missed a free throw. It was hilarious -- well done, students! Who can argue with gut-busting laughter?

Also thought it was great when they screamed whenever Parks got the ball after he let out a yell earlier in the game.
