  • South Dakota DI Players

I'm curious to hear from those who have seen the top players in the state who are in the current junior class and below who might have the potential to play at the DI level whether it be with SDSU or elsewhere. I have seen Anthony Cordova who is a 6'7 junior center at Sioux Falls Roosevelt play twice and felt if he continues to improve he will get some options to play at the DI level. Anthony held his own at the Timberwolves Shootout against a center who is being recruited by most of the major schools. He will not have the luxury of Joe Krabenhoft at his side next year. The other name that is thrown around is 6'7 Michael Tvedt of Pierre. Seems to be debate over which sport football or basketball he will play at the next level. He played for the Dakota Schoolers last year. I have also seen 6'4 junior guard Jon Ryan of Watertown. I'm sure with Brian Norberg as his coach he will continue to develop. I have also heard there are some good players at Aberdeen Central, but don't know much about them. I think its safe to assume that Blake Yackley will be the only South Dakota recruit coming to SDSU in 2005 unless there are some walkons. What kind of season is he having? Coaches are having to identify and develop relationships with players at a younger age all the time. I know most of us don't care where our players come from, but I would like to speculate who are those handful of players in the state who have the talent to play at a DI university. Now that there is a DI school in the state hopefully we can keep them in South Dakota. I know Mike H has seen a lot of games and players and maybe has some helpful insight.

I guess there are no other top players in South Dakota that State should be considering.

      Jackguy,
Here is the website for the dakota schoolers, they traditionally have the best juniors in the state on the team. There may be a few left off.

I believe former SDSU student assistant Eric Bass is now an assistant coach at Sully Buttes. I know Yackley has family ties to State but having him out there may help west river recruiting.

Liz Helsper, a 10th grader from Brookings, may be a future d1 player. I've watched her play a couple of times and she seems to be heading in the right direction. I know her family are big State supporters.

Liz Helsper is a very skilled player who can run, shoot, and rebound.

She is 5'11" and has great range. Last Saturday she hit six 3s.

Liz and the rest of the Bobcats are in Yankton getting ready to defend their state title. They play Pierre today in the second game of the tournament.

79, Thanks for alerting me the Schoolers have updated their 2005 roster. The Gold team certainly has some size. Would be fun to see these guys play!

Templeton from RCC is supposed to have DI talent, not sure if he has already committed somewhere or not.

to play out his career in obscurity. I don't get that move. Why not come to SDSU where he can become a household name? Instead, he picks a team that is just another squad in an already saturated sports scene?

I know we don't need South Dakota kids, but i believe it would help the move along within the state if we land one of these d1 caliber kids soon. Maybe Yackley is that one, but i think we would need to have one that has other d1 offers on the table. I have hope for the Tveidt player from Pierre. He would be a great start. I know it is a hard choice for a 17 year old kid to choose Brookings over California or Omaha (creighton), or Missoula MT, but somewhere along the line pride has to come into play and that kid has to want to play with that SD and State across his chest.

I think it will be difficult to get some of these kids until we get into a conference. You see many believe it's more prestigious to go play in another state. Many end up transferring closer to home when they find it's not as much fun to play in relative obscurity instead of being in front of friends and family. Numerous examples of this at the Univ of Minnesota.

The parents of these kids have a huge influence in where they go. If the kid's father is anti-SDSU, odds are he's not going to attend SDSU.

I know I'm a little late.  But maybe the kid is tired of the cold weather and wants to get away from home?

If he made a recruiting to Irvine in winter and left SD with snow on the ground and came to Irvine with the nice weather, beaches, and other things to do that could have influenced his decision.
