Scotland's Hight Named To Class B Boys' First Team

They call them the lonely hours.
That's the time spent in the empty high school gym, the sweltering weight room or on a makeshift driveway basketball court.

The time spent away from the pep band, fans and cheerleaders, away from family and friends, where good players become great, one free throw, one jump shot, one bench press at a time. It's when games -- and championships -- are really won.

The common trait exhibited by the 2005 Class B all-state team is what their coaches call work ethic, the will to put in just a little more sweat than the next player in the quest for hardcourt excellence.

First team selections, as chosen by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association, are Mike Steffen of Mount Vernon, Blake Yackley of Sully Buttes, Tucker Hight of Scotland, Preston Broughton of Corsica and Eric Krogman of Elkton. . . .

Steffen led Mount Vernon to a second consecutive third place finish at the "B" tournament, where he was also recognized with the Spirit of Su award. The 6-foot-5 senior is the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,564 points and has signed a letter of intent to play football for South Dakota State University.

"He is a class act on and off the court," said Mount Vernon coach Eric Denning. "He is a great role model and his work ethic separates him from others."

"His numbers could have been much larger, but he was very unselfish and played on a very balanced team that was 59-10 with him as a starter," Denning continued.

"He is one of the all-time great four-sport athletes that our state has produced," Denning said. "He could have chosen any one of four sports to play in college."

Yackley and second-team pick Hyde were the cornerstones of a Sully Buttes team that compiled an 86-10 record and never suffered a home-court loss the last four years.

"Both of these kids were committed during the summer to their team, and we will miss their ability to raise the kids' level of play around them," said Sully Buttes coach Keith Moore.

"Blake is one of the finest all-around players in the state," said Moore. "He can do it all. (He) defends and scores inside or outside, sees the floor extremely well, rebounds on both ends of the floor and is highly competitive.

"It was so much fun to go into games with him on our side, as we always knew we had a chance to be successful with him and his competitive nature. We will miss watching him compete and his ability to will us to wins," Moore said.

Yackley, a 6-4 senior also bound for SDSU next fall
    , scored 66.7 percent from the field for the 23-2 Chargers. . . .

    Go State! ;D
