    Go Jacks
Thought this would be an interesting discussion that had nothing to do with 'Who Would Replace Nagy'.

I think we are more than one player away from winning the conference, unless Dwight Howard - type is walking in the door. In my opinion we need:
1.) a true 5 (physical defender with at least the threat of blocking a shot, that OWNS his half of the lane on the defensive boards.
2.) An athletic wing who attacks the glass on both ends of the court. In the game agains Oakland, I kept seeing our guys box someone out & clearing a hole for another Oakland player to jump to grab the ball while our guys were planted on the ground attempting to box out.
3.) A second option that can create their own shot (Obviously Wolters is option 1).

I think we are a solid post player from competing to be a top three team, but to be a real threat to win the conference and have the opportunity to pull an upset in the NCAA Tourney which has to be the ultimate goal, we need more than 1 more guy. Things would have to go really right for us to get there next year.

If we get Cougill and Crayton and those two mesh with what we already have we can win the conference next year.

Re: What do we need to make the next step.

SDSU needs that athletic but tight end strong bull in the 5 slot. Think healthy Cordova but 6-9 to 7-0.

Jacks will want that shooting guard that eventually fills a Clint Sargent sniper. Especially if also has the defensive ability to make the star shooter for the opponent disappear. This year, that defensive star was Dale Moss.

It would be fabulous if the men were like the women's team that were so fluid together, that it doesn't matter who's on the floor we can outplay/outlast the opposing team, especially those with a 7-8 person rotation (exceeding 10 min per game/avg). Jacks were getting close to this year. They are about two to three people from have that solid 10-12 player rotation.

Regarding moving up the Summit League, ORU brings back their whole starting 5, add in their best, all-conference player (Craion) who was out injured last year.

Oakland loses their two bigs in the middle, but will use their two 7-0 bench guys, plus 6-9 and 6-7 C/F returnees to compliment Hamilton, Bader & Michigan transfer. Eackles is leaving Oakland. http://www.ougrizzlies.com/sports/m-...032411aaa.html

So overall, the best that Jacks are likely to move up in the pre-season polls is to third. Of course, pre-season isn't post-season, but Jacks matched, but did not exceed expectations from the beginning of the 10-11 season.

I agree with all that. I think a wide body in the 5 spot is critical. Lets face it guards are gonna get beat off the dribble, but if they're are met by a big post player, they might think twice about coming in there again.

I agree with all this except the comment about the men playing more like the womens team. Get to the dance like them (yes). Play with the number of tournovers they did for most of the year (no). I really enjoyed watching this years mens team and how Wolters insures minimal mistakes. The Womens team even with the furious finish not so much. I think it was more a product a playing average to bad Summit League teams than anything else.

My comments were about having the depth, the quality of players, that there is virtually no differerence between having the starting 5, or the next 5-7 players out on the court at any given time. I have some (minor) concerns about the potential burnout, injuries, ala Garrett Callahan and Kai Williams for Nate and Jordan. If we can get them to under 30 min a game, and no loss on the floor while out, then we'll be able to outlast teams. The SDSU WBB game of Dec 2008 vs Minnesota is an example of where SDSU outlasted an equal team. Having the ability come Summit Tourney time to rest "stars" helps a lot.

Losing a Nate Wolter player to injury for a season/late in season, , that with their current lack of depth, would be a losing proposition for the Jacks. Certainly need to continue the mens trend of few turnovers. That was a good part of the success the Jacks had this season.

Re: What do we need to make the next step.

                1. More depth. We need a lot more depth. Not just quantity but quality. Being able to play 8-9 guys who can fill a role and play positive minutes instead of just eating minutes is crucial.
                2. Defense has to become a point of emphasis and part of our identity. This has to be something we can rely on every single game. I know a lot of people are asking for a big man in the middle to help with this, but you can still be a very good defensive team without a hulk of a man in the middle with good rotations from all five players on the floor. Our defense was swiss cheese way too many times this year.
                3. We need to get more athletic. Obviously every player on the team is a good athlete. My point here is we need that next level of athletes on our roster. You can do a lot more on offense and defense when you can match or surpass the opponent's athleticism.

we need students who show up to games.

My friends and I are the ones in the body paint. When students use to go to games and we would win 20 plus games a year.

The team change from a inside out game to a perimeter team, by doing so our last couple years are getting better while we get players who fit that style. A post player would be nice. Doesnt have to be a huge guy but someone who knows how to play the position. Like a Matt Jones but without the mono and maybe a little tougher.

read again, the point is that students actually use to go game. Its pathetic the turn out now. Students should be ashamed of themselves. for 1 year they got 19 wins. They use to get well over 20 wins a year usually only 1 loss at home if that. How many home losses did we have this year? I wouldnt be surprised if students couldn't even anwser that, because they hardy show up. The team has no fan support, thats what WE need to do to take the next step, The thread is what do we need to do to take the next step, not what the team needs to do. We as fans and mainly students need to show up and cheer and create a home court advantage. I know you never experienced it, but Frost use to be a tough place for teams to play. Now its like a shoot around gym for them.
