    Nebraska-South Dakota All-Star Rosters Announced

A tall task awaits the South Dakota boys' squad in the 2005 edition of the Nebraska-South Dakota All-Star Games, sponsored by Missouri Valley Sports Medicine and scheduled for June 18 at Mount Marty's Laddie E. Cimpl Arena.
    Actually, it's two tall tasks.

The twin-towers of Grand Island Central Catholic's Kenny Howard (6-10) and Pleasanton's Gabriel Zwiener (6-11) lead the southern squad in the annual event, now in its 17th year.

Zwiener averaged 19 points, 6.5 rebounds and 6.5 blocks per game in leading Pleasanton to the Nebraska Class D-1 title. A first-team All-State selection, he set a state record with 479 blocked shots in his career.

Howard averaged 18.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and six blocks a game, earning All-State honors while leading the Crusaders to a C-1 semifinal appearance.

The Nebraska squad features a number of players from the Omaha metro area, including Tyler Albers (6-3, 21 ppg, 6 rpg, 2.5 apg) of Papillion-LaVista, Matt Culliver (6-1, 25 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 7 apg, 5 spg) and Brandon McGruder (6-0, 20.2 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.6 apg) of Omaha Bryan, Josh Dotzler (6-1, 15 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 7.5 apg, 5 spg) and Michael Jenkins (6-3, 17.5 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3 spg) of Bellevue West, and Cole Salomon (6-5, 16.5 ppg, 8 rpg, 2 bpg) of Millard North.

Also on the southern squad are Matt Hadenfeldt (6-1, 21.7 ppg, 10 rpg, 4 apg) of Class D-2 champion Lynch and Ryan Moore (6-2, 16.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.5 apg) of Class B champion Beatrice.

A big-school laden South Dakota roster is charged with the task of ending a 10-game Nebraska win streak in the event, led by the O'Gorman guard duo of Mitch Begeman (6-2, 20 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 3.6 apg) and Jesse Clark (6-0, 15.6 ppg, 2 rpg, 4.6 apg). Mitchell guard Ryan Krome (5-10, 12.5 ppg, 4 rpg, 4 apg) and Yankton swingman Travis Seitzinger (6-4, 16 ppg, 6 rpg, 3 apg) are on the roster, as are west-river big men Casey Anderson (6-6, 18 ppg, 8 rpg, 2 apg, 7 bpg) of Sturgis and Jeremy Delahoyde (6-5, 15 ppg, 8 rpg, 4 apg, 3 spg) of Spearfish.

The four small-school players on the South Dakota roster come with impressive resumes as well, led by Eric Krogman (6-8, 23 ppg, 13 rpg, 4 bpg) of Class B champion Elkton. Also on the South Dakota squad are Tri-Valley standout Chad Bigge (6-6, 16 ppg, 7 rpg, 3 apg), Dell Rapid St. Mary's star Rane Mergan (6-8, 18 ppg, 12 rpg, 2 bpg) and Sioux Falls Christian guard Caleb Veldhouse (25.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.7 apg, 2.7 spg).

Elkton's Ervin Gebhart and Milbank's Boyd Sussex will lead the South Dakota boys' squad. Randy Bauer of Pleasanton and Clint Hoelscher of Papillion-LaVista will lead the Nebraska team.

The South Dakota girls' roster has a small-school feel, but is not small on talent, as nine of the 10 players are headed to NCAA Division II or Division I institutions.

A pair of future South Dakota State players, Beresford's Natalie Carda (6-1, 20.5 ppg, 13.9 rpg, 4.5 spg) and Willow Lake's Jennifer Warkenthien (5-11, 20.5 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 2.2 apg), supply the north-siders with a strong inside presence, as do West Central's Kristen McMahon (5-10, 18 ppg, 5 rpg, 3 apg) and Sioux Falls Roosevelt's Calla Sharping (5-10, 14 ppg, 6 rpg, 3 apg). Jessica Deinert (5-8, 14 ppg, 6 rpg, 4 apg) was also an inside force for two-time Class B champion Mount Vernon.

The guard duties for the South Dakota team are also in capable hands, with Lead-Deadwood sharp-shooter Amanda Rantapaa (5-8, 16.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 7.4 apg), who tied a state record with 11 three-pointers in the state tournament this past season; Hamlin's Jill Jorgenson (5-7, 12 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 4 apg, 5.5 bpg), O'Gorman standout Jenn Lammers (5-8, 13 ppg, 5 rpg, 2 spg), Rapid City Stevens star Anne Doshier (5-7, 14 ppg, 6 rpg, 4 apg) and Watertown standout Ashley Herzog (5-7, 10.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2 apg, 2 spg).

Like their male counterparts, the Nebraska girls boast a size advantage in the middle, with three girls over 6-0 and seven players 5-10 or better.

Bellevue East boasts the tallest (Katie Homan, 6-2, 13.2 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 2 apg, 3 bpg) and shortest (Chevelle Herring, 5-4, injured in 2005, Omaha World Herald All-State in 2004) players in the girls' game.

West Point Central Catholic contributes its twin towers, 6-1 Jackie Knievel (16 ppg, 7 rpg, 2 bpg) and 5-11 Megan Nuevirth (21.3 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 5.3 spg). South Sioux City's Molly Frank (6-0, 10.5 ppg, 5 rpg, 3 apg) is the other six-footer for the south-siders.

Omaha Skutt's Katie Smith (17.5 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 6.1 apg, 6.4 spg) will attend the University of Kansas. Both Herring and Nuevirth are headed to Creighton this fall.

Also on the Nebraska roster are Cassy Drueppel (5-6, 18.6 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 3 apg, 2 spg) of Lincoln Southeast, Katie Long (5-10, 9.5 ppg, 5 rpg, 2 apg) of Papillion-LaVista, Jade Meads (5-10, 26 ppg, 11 rpg, 4 spg) of Elm Creek and Angela Volentine (5-8, 16.4 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 2.3 apg) of North Platte.

Matt Fritsche and Terry Shelsta of Bellevue West will coach the Nebraska team. Jim Altenburg of DeSmet and Brad Noem of Hamlin will lead the South Dakota team.

The girls' game is set for 6 p.m., with the boys' game at 8 p.m. at Laddie E. Cimpl Arena. Tickets are $7 for preferred seating on the chair-back seats, $6 for general admission bleacher seating.
