Quick South wears down North for 104-82 boys' all-star basketball victory

After three straight victories, you might have expected the South to let its "guard" down. Instead, it was the backcourt that fueled yet another victory during the South Dakota High School All-Star Games.
Fueled by potent guard play, the South used a 35-17 fourth-quarter surge to roll past the North 104-82 during the boys' basketball game at Wachs Arena.
"They were a little bigger than us," said the South's Mitch Begeman of Sioux Falls O'Gorman. "We just used our quickness on them."
The pace of the contest was a key for the South. It eventually spelled the end for the North, which trailed by just four points entering the final period.
"The second half took a toll on us," said North guard Adam Korkow of Huron. "The fourth quarter, we just got tired."
It was the backcourt of the South that proved to be too much for the North. When the guards weren't beating people off the dribble and finishing at the rim, they were making the extra pass for wide-open looks.
"Their guards are the best in the state," said North forward Blake Yackley of Sully Buttes.
Begeman and Adam Herther of Sioux Falls Lincoln did the bulk of the damage in the final period. Begeman tossed in 10 points and Herther nine during the quarter. However, it was a team effort as six different players scored in double figures for the South.
"It's pretty much a one-man show in most all-star games," Begeman said. "We were really patient, tonight. We shared the ball and it showed."
Time after time, the South made the extra pass to set up high-percentage attempts. The squad finished with 23 assists.
"We talked about making the extra pass," Herther said. "We figured with extra passes it would be hard to cover us."
That is exactly what happened. Those extra passes not only got the South better looks at the hoop, it further wore down the North in the process.
"They were moving it pretty good," Korkow said. "It wears you down. You always have to keep rotating, helping each other out."
Begeman led all scorers with 18 points and even got a chance to do a few tricks shots with the game out of reach. He tried a little bit of everything except a dunk.
"I can't dunk it, yet," Begeman said. "I'm almost there."
Herther and Mitchell's Ryan Krome each added 14 points to the South total. Chad Bigge of Tri-Valley followed with 13, Ryan Rozell of Brandon Valley contributed 11 and Jesse Clark of O'Gorman finished with 10.
Elkton's Eric Krogman powered the North with 14 points. Yackley added 13 points and a game-high four steals.
Despite the setback, Yackley said it was an enjoyable experience.
"You want to play hard and always go for the win," Yackley said, "but it's just fun to get on the court and put on the uniform again."
