Actually, he was a 1952 Lake Preston grad...my classmate. Unfortunately, he died very young (in his 30s, can't remember the year). When we were seniors in high school, we played three games against Hayti, coached by Jim Marking at the time, and Garney Henley, who went on to play professionaly in Canada, was a sophomore. Bill was 6'6" and one of the best centers in the state at the time.

We went to Hayti and lost by one point, they came to Lake Preston and we won by one point. We met in the regional and lost in a double overtime game when the score was tied, and we had the ball in the closing seconds. Our senior captain dribbled by the bench when the coach called him over to tell him something. At the time, that was a technical foul (crazy right!!) and the refs called it, Hayti made the free throws and we lost. They went on to the state tournament, but lost in the finals to Ipswich (I think 38-33), which had Leo and Harvey Hammrich on the team. As one earlier poster said, I guess that puts me in the old-timers group!

For the record, this is the funniest conversation I have ever read. I picture all of you sitting on the front porch whittling while talking about this.

Glad to entertain you, and improve your historical knowledge at the same time, as we rock away on the front porch!

I thought this had more of a Bill Brasky tone to the conversation.

I thought you would be a classmate or near one. I guess it was 1952, that I saw the District 11 championship game in the Barn. That's the one and only time I saw Bill play, but I was really impressed with him. Do you remember who you played in the District finals? I want say it was Volga, now Sioux Valley.

I do not need to whittle to reminise btw, its kind of natural for me. Thanks for the recall of the 1952 finals, and never realized that the Hammrich boys were on that team. Harvey was a very good football athlete at SDSU as I recall.

I think any 7-footer with a Shanks bloodline would be worth seriously checking out. There are a lot of very good basketball players in that family tree.

Let me clarify, I've heard about a lot of other former Jackrabbits offspring and their current achievements and I guess I haven't thought to post them here. Perhaps this is just the place to do that. I don't know. I have really enjoyed the conversation revolving around this topic so it may be worthwhile.

But when people have talked about the recruitment of Tetzlaff, C. Jacobson, the Steffens, Teifenthaler, Hermanson, the high-ranked wrestler who just signed, etc, they have all talked about the relationships of family members or coaches and SDSU. What makes this different?

As for not being intersted this far out, were you interested when Chad White, Tony Fiegen, and Zach Horstman were being recruited? It doesn't matter to me if you were or not, but hose guys verballed before we even heard of this guy. I have no clue Shanks is on our radar or not(I am guessing we at least are aware of him?), and it really doesn't matter to me whether there is a connection to SDSU, but I don't see anything wrong with discussing a potential recruit. We do it every day, and I haven't noticed you make a grumpy-sounding post on those.

I think there may be a little misunderstanding. I have some reservations about complete strangers taking a specialty interest in 13 or 14 year old children. It often leads to more problems than it does anyone any good. I also understand that in this instance this is little more than a novelty thread and there is a commonality in his uncle having played for SDSU. I still have my concerns. Speculation about 13 and 14 year old children hasn't been prevalent on this forum and it seems unlikely that the moderators would allow it to get out-of-hand so I retract the "grumpiness" but stick to the substance of my initial reply.
