  • 2010/11 Men's BB Ranking/Rating Watch

Starting a new thread to track where the men's team is in the various rating systems and rankings this year--Mid-Major, Sagarin, etc., etc.

Will make sticky for the basketball season.

Starting out, as of December 2:

College Insider Mid-Major Poll: SDSU is #17
    NCAA RPI: (not out yet)
    RealTime RPI: SDSU is #99
Sagarin/USA Today (teams): SDSU is #47
Sagarin/USA Today (conferences): Summit League is #13
    Pomeroy: SDSU is #120
    Dolphin: SDSU is #45

That should be enough to chew on for a while. I like Pomeroy, personally, because he's an uber-stat-geek, although I think he's got SDSU a bit low. I think a ranking in the 40's is high for SDSU right now, but the season is still young and a lot can happen. (If we beat Minnesota, then I'll start thinking a ranking in the 40's will be justified . . .)

    Re: 2010/11 Men's BB Ranking/Rating Watch

Checking in, as of January 4:

College Insider Mid-Major Poll: SDSU is receiving votes (would be #30)
    NCAA RPI: (not out yet)
    RealTime RPI: SDSU is #150
Sagarin/USA Today (teams): SDSU is #111
Sagarin/USA Today (conferences): Summit League is #16
    Pomeroy: SDSU is #130
    Dolphin: SDSU is #110

Interesting that the league goes into the new year in the top half of all basketball conferences (in Sagarin's weighted mean scheme--basically overweighting the middle of the conference and underweighting the top and bottom), and ahead of conferences like the MAC (18), Big Sky (23), and Sun Belt (26) that have at least a bit more name recognition.

The good news is that the top conference teams as a group (Oakland, SDSU, IPFW, IUPUI, NDSU) can reasonably be expected to maintain their level or continue to improve as things go on, the bottom half (ORU (!), UMKC, WIU) plus USD as a group can certainly be expected to get better, so I fully expect the Summit League to get tougher top-to-bottom in the next few years, which means better basketball in Frost Arena and all over the league--which (knock on wood) translates into bigger attendance, and sets up a "virtuous loop" of improvement on top of improvement for the entire league.

(Who needs the Valley (#12) when you're already at the Summit?)

With the tough schedule that Oakland plays,it surprises me that they are only ranked 9th in the mid-major poll.

I agree. Their two losses to mid majors were Wright St and Valpo. Youd think beating Tennessee and taking Michigan St to the wire would be good enough for a top 5 ranking. But then what do rankings mean?
