LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky reserve center Shagari Alleyne underwent outpatient surgery Wednesday to repair a hernia but should be back for the start of preseason practice in October, the university said Wednesday.
Raymond Gagliardi, a surgeon at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, performed the laparoscopic surgery on the 7-foot-3 junior, who averaged 2.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game as the Wildcats finished 28-6 last season. Alleyne, who played in 29 games, also had 44 blocked shots.
"We have an excellent medical staff, so I know Shagari was in good hands," Kentucky coach Tubby Smith said in a statement from the university. . . .
Kentucky is scheduled to begin preseason practice on Oct. 14. The Wildcats' season opener will be Nov. 13 at home against South Dakota State.
