  • Matt Jones

Has anyone heard how Matt Jones is doing as he approaches his senior year. I'm sure basketball is out of the question, but wonder how his health is. He is a smart kid with a bright future.

Haven't heard anything. I do see him around campus and brookings every once and awhile. I do think basketball is out of the question but i always have held on hope that he would return for one more year of eligibility and dominate again.

He, Steve Holdren, Andre Gilbert, Matt Cadwell, and Ben Beran are transferring to a J.C. in Illinois. At least that's what sports_buff told me. ;D

It really is a shame about Matt Jones. He was a amazing basketball player and a good kid. I played high school ball against him so I kind of have an idea of his ability. I wish him well in the future.

            Re: Matt Jones

I spent a lot of time visiting with Matt over the weekend of the spring game. He functions at a level above and beyond the average person his age but not at the elite level of a DI athlete. He had a great year on the baseball field and his managing his schoolwork. Unfortunately he has not recovered his strength and stamina. Sometimes the sequelae of Ebstein-Barr virus (mono) can be substantial. How exciting a player was Matt? I wish he was well enough to play.

              Lake Norden 17

              Volga 11

Mike Thyen smacked four hits, including a home run and double to guide the Lakers, who finished with 14 hits. Paul Raasch added three hits, including a home run, and Matt Jones belted two home runs. Matt Stevenson and Matt Pollock each also clubbed a home run and Brian Pommer chipped in with a double.A little exerpt from the Watertown P.O.

Lake Norden only has one loss this year and Matt's bat is a big reason. As far as basketball, he has been playing pick-up ball with the new Jackrabbit recruits and rumor is that he is getting stronger with each passing week. Has anyone bumped into any of the boys in Brookings recently?

I'm cautiously optomisitic that we will see Matt Jones on the Frost arena floor in a Jacks uniform this fall.

It's great to hear that Matt is regaining his strength and playing a little ball with the new Jacks. I would love to see him in uniform again. He was one of the best and most exciting players I've seen in my 20+ years of attending SDSU games.

                    Re: Matt Jones

For once there is a rumor you hope is very true, just for Matt sake in terms of returning to good health.  What little I have seen of Matt off the court, he strikes me as class individual and one you would be proud to claim as a blood relative.

As Jackmd said, we have to be very cautiously optmistic about his health progress and participation in athletics.

I would guess he does have at least two years of eligibilty left, but academically he may be very close to finishining his undergrad work.

This indeed will be interesting to see how it all plays out.  Matt was without a doubt a crowd's favorite at Frost and on the road.

                      Re: Matt Jones

I remember a game Matt played against one of the North Dakota schools.  They had a senior center and Matt ate him up for 20+ points.  I was lucky enough to be sitting court side and someone close to me asked the senior how it felt to be outplayed by a freshman.  All he did was shake his head in agreement.  I would love to see Matt play basketball for the Jacks again but I wish more for his health to return.

JackMD- if Matt is beginning to play some basketball again does he risk any longterm effects should he decided to play on the team this season.

I cannot see any chance of long term damage related to a previous EBV infection. In the acute phase of mono the spleen can be enlarged and there is a risk for rupture with physical contact. However, at this time, I think physical activity would be nothing but good for Matt.

Has anyone heard if Matt is going to try and play this year? It would certainly be fun to watch a healthy Matt Jones battle against some of the athletic teams we will see this year. After seeing him dominate his freshman year I felt he could have competed at the DI level!

Matt is still playing baseball with Lake Norden.

Lake Norden beats Alex with big innings

A five-run sixth inning helped lift Lake Norden to a 12-2 win over Alexandria in a first-round game at the Class B state amateur baseball tournament Friday night at Cadwell Park.....

Raasch finished the game 3-for-6 with five RBIs, Thyen went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Stevenson went 2-for-6 with two RBIs, Sauter went 2-for-5 with an RBI, Matt Jones went 2-for-4 and Trumm went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

I'm hoping he is considering basketball this fall.
