  • Beran/Holdren make preseason All-Indy team

I see in my Jacks Flash that Beran and Holdren have been named to Street and Smiths preseason All-Independent team. Best I can tell they make up 2 of the 5 with a one player each from N. Colorado, Longwood, and Utah Valley St.

I'd like to see them post on the post-season list.

BROOKINGS -- South Dakota State University men's basketball players Ben Beran and Steve Holdren have been tabbed by Street and Smith's magazine as members of the 2005-06 Preseason All-Independent Team.

Beran, a 6-7 junior forward from Victor, Iowa, led SDSU in scoring last season with an average of 13.6 points per game, while adding 5.9 rebounds per game.

Holdren, a 6-5 sophomore guard-forward from Champaign, Ill., was second on the squad last season with averages of 12.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

The SDSU duo were joined on the team by Northern Colorado center Kirk Archibeque, Longwood (Va.) guard Michael Jefferson and Utah Valley State forward David Heck.

The Jackrabbits open the 2005-06 season Nov. 12 at Kentucky in the first round of the Guardians Classic.

Look forward to seeing Beran and Holdren lead this team. I worry about the lack of depth and rotation in the frontcourt when someone needs rest or we get in foul trouble. Can't wait for Morningside a week from tomorrow

Depth and size will be huge deficits this year. I don't think we can play 40 minutes of intense DI quality defense and I worry about the guards distributing the ball. Who will be our consistent inside scoring threat? Beran just isn't big enough and Loney lacks athleticism. Will one of the RSFr average 15 points a game? Can Holdren, Cadwell, Frias, Hornby, etc.. knock down enough 3's? Many more questions remain. I guess they'll be answered game-by-game and week-by-week.

Whats wrong with beran being an inside threat? He put up about 20 a game last year, but this year he's not good enough. Most of our inside production will come from the 3 and 4, which isn't unusual. Every time I read this board somebody is talking about the athletic center we need. Berte is the best center we are going to get, and he's a very good basketball player. He will have the ability to shut down other centers that we play against, so that the 5 spot is negated, and the fowards will be the inside game. Does everybody on this board expect Shaq to walk through the doors or what?

Don't know where this rant is coming from. Losses to Morningside, Southwest St, etc.. last year hardly constitutes what I would consider good enough. This year the bulk of the schedule will consist of much more athletic DI teams. I never suggested that "Shaq" should walk through the door. I only expressed some concerns about the team this year. Check your emotions at the door and lets discuss the positives and negatives.

Beran is a versatile 4-man who would dominate at the DII level. At the DI-level almost every team has a guy like him. If this team can demonstrate more ability at guard (no way it can be less than last year) Beran will benefit. No doubt Barte will help on the defensive end and having slashers like Gilbert and Holdren attacking the basket will help. No time to expand the discussion right now but I'll be back.

Re: Beran/Holdren make preseason All-Indy team

I think Beran is fine at the 4 position and from what I know of Berte will be good at the center. The issue here is going to be depth at the 4 and 5 position. If the two 6'10 freshman redshirt as expected than loney at an undersized 6'6 is the only guy to step in and give us minutes. Yes we will be more athletic than probably ever before, but we are extremely lean in the power forward and center position. Remember we unexpectedly lost Joe Green and Matt Jones who played those postions.

Re: Beran/Holdren make preseason All-Indy team

I take it none of you made it to Midnight Madness this year. I did, and the team we have this year is nothing like the one of a year ago. We will have 5 new guys this year (Berte, Frias, Gilbert, Cadwell, Hornby) who will contribute greatly, and its my guess at least 3 of them will be starting. We will also have a healthy Kleinjan and some more depth in Keller.

I think our biggest problem last year wasn't so much our lack of size as it was our perimeter play, we just didn't have the guards or outside shooting to compete against the quick DI players. We will be in much better shape this year. No disrepect to our guards last year, but with injuries and the loss of Moeller, we just couldn't compete at the DI level.

I hate to be too optimistic, but I think we are going to be pleasantly surprised how the season turns out. Looking forward to next monday's opener against Morningside!

                Go Jacks!

I agree our problem last year was not size, but rather guard play. We had two walk-on guards who did the best they were capable of. I like our guard mix this year and think they will surprise. I'm anxious to see what a healthy Andy Klenijan can do. I just wished we had a couple of big guys who could come off the bench and give us some minutes and fouls. In 2006/2007 we will have that luxury.

Re: Beran/Holdren make preseason All-Indy team

I would have to think not both of the 6'10" guys will be redshirted. We ran into a lot of problems last year with our big guys getting in foul trouble and if we have to sit 2 of our guys down, we would have to play either Gilbert/Yackley/ or Holdren at the power forward. I think Beran is going to have a good year just because of the shape he is in. He wasn't out of shape or anything last year but he looks really toned in his uniform this year. We had problems last year with team speed. I really don't think that is going to be a problem this year. If we can get our three's taken care of, Beran and Berte will have some easy scoring. Have to worry about turnovers though too.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--
