    Re: Morningside Exhibition Game

    Nagy postgame comments:

"It's frustrating to win a game and feel like you lost."

We saw the difference between a senior-dominated team (Morningside) and a team with freshman guards. "It's going to take a while for us to work this thing out." Noted that we started two guards in their first college game ever. "They'll get a lot better."

    And... "Morningside is pretty good."

Said the rotations are pretty fluid. There were players he didn't expect to play much who played a lot and players who he expected to play a lot didn't because he's not happy with them. "They'll figure out in a hurry what makes me happy and what doesn't."

"We're a lot better than we played tonight. ... We're playing with freshman guards."

Focused on Gilbert. Said he didn't play well, but hasn't played this week because of a minor hand injury. Said Cadwell did OK. "We started two guys playing their first college game ever. They'll get a lot better."

And my guess is Nagy is really unhappy with Gilbert coz the hand injury had nothing to do with basketball. Boy, boys, boys.

        Re: Morningside Exhibition Game

I was at the game and it was very sloppy. We had 20 turnovers and shot just 16-31 on free throws. We came out really sluggish and pretty much showed the fire of an exhibition game. Evidently with all our new players, we didn't seem to remember that Morningside beat us last year :-/

If I remember correctly I think it was Beran, Gilbert, Cadwell, Berte and Loney starting the game but I don't think it means a whole lot considering Nagy's post game comments. Sounds like there is still alot of feeling out with the players, I guess thats the whole point with playing exhibition games though.

As for the game, seems like a couple of guys each had their own little runs. Cadwell hit some big shots midway through the 1st half, Holdren had a nice run early in the second half, and Frias and Berte had a real nice spurt in the last 5 minutes to put the game away.

I was impressed with both of our transfers. Frias looks like he will be good at dishing it and put some nice pressure on the Morningside guards for a few steals. Berte was in foul trouble most of the game, but played tough down the stretch. He had a couple turn-around J's and showed a nice touch, had some big rebounds, a blocked shot, and threw in a couple dunks to top things off.

I don't think we can take too much from this game other than we got first game jitters out of the way for everybody and gave them a chance to play together. We have a ton of new players this year as well as some redshirt freshman who will be seeing alot of time. They're gonna need to get it together in a hurry with the competition we have coming up, but the potential is there.

        Go Jacks!

          NEWS from STATE:

          10/31/2005
Jacks Top Morningside In Men's Basketball Exhibition
South Dakota State took the lead late in the first half, then fought off Morningside most of the second half before transfer Mohammed Berte’ (ber-tay) sparked a late rally which gave the Jackrabbits an 80-69 victory in men’s exhibition basketball Monday night at Frost Arena.

Morningside took an early, going up 11-6 on a three-pointer by Paul Larsen, and held the lead until the last five minutes of the half when SDSU broke an 18-18 tie with a 17-8 run which left the Jacks on top 35-26 at intermission.

SDSU never trailed in the second half, but the Mustangs kept it close until the last nine minutes. With SDSU leading 62-60, Berte’ scored on a jumper from the left baseline to trigger a run during which the 6-8 transfer from Indian Hills CC in Iowa scored 12-of-14 Jackrabbit points getting two dunks, and contributed two rebounds plus a blocked shot.

Sophomore Steve Holdren, one of two returning starters for the Jacks, led four players in double figures with 15, scoring 13 in the second half. Redshirt freshman Matt Cadwell scored 13 while Berte’ had 12 points and nine rebounds and transfer guard Jose Frias also scored 12.

SDSU started the game cold, hitting just 3 of its first 14 shots. But after finishing the first half 12-for-28, 42.9 per cent, State made 17-of-28 second half shots, 60.7 per cent leaving the Jacks at 51.8 per cent for the game.

Morningside, which shot 32.3 per cent for the game (21-of-65), was led by reserve Paul McGill, the only Mustang in double figures, with 17 points.

SDSU finished with a 45-37 rebounding advantage, but the Jacks had 20 turnovers, three more than Morningside.

SDSU will host Upper Iowa in another exhibition game Nov. 6 before opening the regular season against Kentucky at the Guardians Classic in Lexington, KY, Nov. 13.

            Re: Morningside Exhibition Game

I did not make it to the game, since I had company from west coast and geneology was more important than basketball at least yesterday. I did get to listen the tail end and everyone's comment seem to confirm what I heard.

This morning on WNAX, after Steve gave the sports, the other announcer asked what he learned from the Morningside game.
            Steve said two things:

            A. SDSU is a better team than last year.

            B. They have a ton of things to work on before Nov 13th.

All in all, I'm still pretty optimistic. We're way, way more athletic (and you can't teach that) and we are much deeper than last year. I also think they're a much better shooting team than last year, despite the slow start last night.

There's nothing wrong with that team that our outstanding coaching staff can't fix.

Did they have the displays @ the scorer's table up and going last night. How did the boards look in a game atmosphere, did they show the score, game information on the big board in the center.

Starters were actually Berte at Center, Beran and Holdren at the forwards with Gilbert and Cadwell at the guards. Loney came off the bench sporting a pretty good shiner on his eye. I like our starting five and the guard rotation with Frias,Kleinjan and Casey coming off the bench. The kid from Gettysburg even got into the game in the first half. Berte got into early foul trouble and this is when we get small real fast with lack of big guys to come off the bench. I was hoping to see Yackley,Engen and Bilitz play but they did not get off the bench. They can play in exhibitions and still redshirt. I think Scott was more interested in playing the horses he will go with for the year. Frias showed some flashes of quickness to the hoop that sparked us. A nice crowd for an exhibition on Halloween night. Good student crowd and the season ticket holders were out in force. I think we will see good crowds out to see this team. We better get the free throw thing fixed soon. Frost seams so colorful and intimate with all the new amenities. I hope the center scoreboard eventually shows fouls, points etc rather than just video. This team will play much better!

Can someone post the box score, I can't seem to find one. I know it is exhibition, but someone should have a box score. Anyone know what the attendance was?

I hope last night was just part of working out the kinks to the new system. There was no game information shown on the big screens in the middle, just running video of the game. Which doesn't make any sense to me, I'm at the game, I don't need to watch it on TV.

In my opinion they should have running game stats on the big boards and just show video highlights of big plays, just like football. Its pretty sad when you don't know how many fouls anyone playing has because there are no scoreboards to show it. I really hope we didn't pay 3 million dollars for a big TV.

Also the scoreboard at the scorers table needs some work on colors. They had a yellow fading to white background behind the stats and it was very bright and somewhat hard to see the actual stat numbers. And the brightness of the board kind of distracted from the actual game. I hope it is possible to tweak the background to a darker blue or something.

Just a few things I noticed, don't get me wrong, the whole package is an excellent addition and definitely adds to the game atmosphere, these are just a few things I think we should tweak.

I agree with the above. I also felt the sound system out of the new center scoreboard was very difficult to understand. I also had heard the signage below the pressbox was placed too high and the media can't see over it!

I was at the game last night. I do not want to be negative but I was not impressed with scoreboard system. I agree with the comments above about the scores table. It is nice they put stats on it but it is hard to read. Also, when players are waiting to check in you can not see it because the players are blocking it. The whole south side of the arena also can't see it which includes the student section. The long Pro Ad boards on the ends did not have any stats on them just ads. I am glad we have corpoate sponsers and understand that we need their dollars but they already have fixed signs all over the arena. Do we really need to see all of the sponsors logos flashed up on the boards when they are already all over the place the way it is. I would think that the end boards would be a good spot for the stats so everybody could see them. The video board is nice but that is all it is, a video board. Not being able to see the score, team fouls, etc. is a real downside. As far as the little scoreboards in the corners of the arena, they are small and look cheap, like something in a High School gym. Unfortunately that is the only place a large number of fans will be able to see the score. I know all of this sounds really negative but over all it is an improvement to Frost. Frost is still the best place in the area to see a basketball game. The video board should add a lot to the atmosphere.

Do you think that it being the first game of the season and the first game with the new scoreboards had anything to do with the problems that we all saw last night. I think we should give the scoreboard operators some time before we throw them out of the arena. I will bet that the advertisements are there to stay. The advertising is what is paying for the system from what I understand, and if I were one of the advertisers, I would want all of the air time that I paid for. Just a thought.

I agree with Cactus.  Last night's game was an exhibition and I would have been shocked if the team and the scoreboard crew were in mid-season form.  You set up these games to "work the bugs out" before the games start to count, this is true for the team as well as the facilities crew. I know everyone means well and are just putting in their 2 cents, but let's cut the team and scoreboard crew a little slack.

My comments were not a knock against the people running the system. Kinks and a learning curve are to be expected. I am just disappointed with the money that was spent that there is not a better place to see the score.

                                Hopefully that will change.
