    Year two equals nationals

    Close only counts in horseshoes, coach Megan McGee pointed out; equestrian is a different animal.

    So while South Dakota State performed well in its inaugural season, pushing the likes of then defending champion South Carolina and eventual champ Auburn, the team narrowly missed earning an invitation to the 2006 Varsity Equestrian National Championships.

    Year 2, then, has been one of acclimation and progress. The Jackrabbits were one of 12 teams selected to compete in the Western portion of the national finals that begin Wednesday morning in Waco, Texas. SDSU was excluded from the Hunt Seat division, however, meaning it will not be eligible to win the overall title.
