Re: Coach Stiegelmeir in Yankton
Played for him for 4 1/2 years and was recruited by him while in high school (he was the D-cord and LB coach then). While it was no secret of his religious beliefs, the only level of preaching Coach Stig ever put on anyone was simply to get them to reach their fullest potential. "You only get so many opportunities in life, men" is a line that is uttered quite often by Stig. He hugs his former players instead of impersonal handshakes and tells them to be good family men above anything else because he believes those things are important. That probably is tied into his religion beliefs, but is due more to him simply being a good man above anything else. If you have young children and get an opportunity to introduce your kids to Stig, do so. Watch how well he relates to kids. I brought my oldest daughter (then 5) to the UNI loss two seasons ago. I talked to him after the game and he was very disappointed in letting that game slip away. He pushed that disappointment aside, kneeled down to get to eye level with my daughter and had a 5 minute conversation with her. He gave me a hug and told me that talking to my daughter and seeing me as a dad made his day...and he meant it. That's just who he is.
Great football coach, better person.
