I agree, but no one takes the time to add up all that Larson has given to this community (that we've known about). His generosity is un-paralleled and I hate to even bring him into the discussion.

Alumni & fans unite! We need MONEY - SHOW me the money!
I would agree with you on what Mr. Larson has given to the Brookings area.

I guess my thinking was more along the lines of a big time corporate sponsor stepping in. Larson Doors came to mind because I just happened to look at the new door I installed.

Perhaps they should contact Lowe's Home Improvement. After all, what other "home" could use the improvement more than CAS?

It is my understanding this is done with Frost, not sure about Coughlin.

EDIT: This may have changed as the system gets a little older. If people are flying to see a demonstration, Dak can fly them pretty much anywhere and I would guess that most of the presentations/proposals are not done at Brookings.

The Dak Center-hung @ Frost has quite a few pixels out on the student side. (don't watch the other sides so I wouldn't know about those)
I don't know what the warranty would be on this if any, (I noticed a few dead pixels within the first year) but I made (parts) of that video display back in 2005. (not the parts that are failing either)

I would think it would behoove Daktronics to ensure that this board worked properly.

I'm as excited as the next guy at the possibility of a new/remodeled CAS, but let's not forget we need to pay our coaches enough to help to ensure success, so this facility will be needed.

I assume there is more to it than this, but they would have field turf paid for in a little over a year.
The school's general strategy for ticket sales has been to: First) get butts in the seats while keeping reasonable ticket prices to create a buzz where SDSU events are a high priority in the local sports scenes, Second) increase the ticket prices once the demand allows for the increase. I think we are approaching the point where ticket prices can be increased. This year will be a good test. Without any real high-profile teams coming to CAS what will our attendance numbers be?

I think that this conversation could enter into the "chicken or the egg" realm of conversations.

With increased facilities there comes more revenue from other than the State of South Dakota and with those better facilites also comes the ability to recruit better players (perhaps).

The argument that better pay for the coaches leads to better recruiting and, therefore, better results is also valid.

              Re: SDSU Stadium-22,000 Seats

I did some googling of other similar stadium costs. I am guessing a 23K seat stadium would cost at around $50 Million to build, and that may be on the low end. Alot of it depends on the amenities.

I don't believe we have one donor with that type of cash. I could be wrong, but that is an awful lot of money.

It's going to take good amount of large donations, mixed in with thousands of small donations from people like us. I would commit $5K over 10 years. Now we just need 9999 more people willing to do the same.

Just saying let's not lose the quality staff we have due to a lack of pay.

SDSU, along with all other public universities in South Dakota, will always have an uphill battle in the coaching ranks. The "year-to-year" contracts that the state issues, IMO, will be a sticking point for many coaches that are entertaining the idea of joining the Jacks' staff.

Let's just say, for arguments sake, that the school can sell the naming rights to the stadium. Would they be able to get a naming contract for something like $25 million? Or would it be closer to the $10-$15 million range? That money could offset the cost to the point where a couple "whales" could cover the remaining costs.

I have an even better idea, why don't we just increase the student's activity fees? Just kidding of course. Or am I?

I would hope the new stadium will keep the same name. Naming rights to the field or luxury boxes is fine. I would be disapointed if it was an Avera or Sanford stadium. I even work for one the hospital systems. I would keep it Coughlin, but change it from Alumni to Friends. Coughlin and Friends stadium. Its not just alumni that have given to SDSU and the stadium in the past. Friends of SDSU and community support were also a part. Coughlin and Friends stadium played on the Larson Field while sitting in the Dak luxuary boxes.

                        Re: SDSU Stadium-22,000 Seats

I'm wondering if the costs can be brought down by some large dollar figure donations, and then bonded out with donation commitments in smaller figures taking care of interest payments and principal retirement over time.

I am certain that the student activity fee -could- be raised, but the students would have to vote to approve it; and even then the vote would be non-binding, as the BoR would have to revisit the policy that prohibits raising fees to pay for athletic improvements due to the D1 move.

If SDSU has what? 10,000 FTE students, @ 15 credits per semester, that's $300,000 per year per dollar of increased student fees.

Would "J Lohr Stadium at Coughlin Field" befit a football stadium?

I don't know Coughlin, never met Coughlin and never will meet Coughlin. He was generous enough to donate money to get CAS built. We are now talking about a new venue and whoever comes up with the lead dough should have their name on it if they so choose. I guess if I had that kind of money it would not be important to me to have my name on a stadium. Don't count out the First Bank and Trust and the Fishback family kicking in some money.

I think the "Alumni Stadium" part of the name should stay. That's a great stadium name. Classic. Old school. Why you can just see the fall colors and feel the nippy air of autumn when you say, "Alumni Stadium"...

Does Mall of America Stadium befit a football stadium (old Metrodome) I frankly don't care what they call it, let's just get it built.
