Re: Lotzer deserves a look next spring

Unless Matt Barkley decides to transfer to SDSU Thomas O'Brien is our quarterback of the future... this kind of talk is absolutely ridiculous. The kid had a tough first half against what could be the best defense he plays in his college career. He is the most physically gifted freshman quarterback that has ever taken a snap for us... it will just take time for the mental aspect to catch up.

whoever started this is an idiot. O'Brien had a rough first have yes. Playing calling did not help him either. Fiorst of all he will be fine next week and the week on. It's one game. He's 3-1 as a freshman starter. Not bad. Second if anyone else played, it would be whittier first which won't happen anyway. I agree with Kemo he'll break records and be fine.

High School and D1 FCS football are not equivalents. Otherwise why are their spring and fall football camps. Why do they even bother to practice daily. I do like Lotzer's size and ability to run, but its up to him to take the starting role away from Obrien.

Just one more point in O'Brien's defense. It was mentioned in passing by another poster earlier, but the center snaps to O'Brien in the shotgun were what really caused the problem. I personally saw at least 7-8 snaps which O'Brien had to pick up off the carpet. Which made him take his eyes off the field for the split second that makes a difference in a game like this.

The game-ending field goal by the Gophers was a gift, because the snap was bad to O'Brien and in his haste to get it off the turf, he fumbled it and gave them the game. That's not on O'Brien IMO! Agree with all the other posters who think this is a crazy thread. To post that Stig is "faithful to his upperclassmen" and put this in a post which infers that he would prefer a redshirt freshman QB to a freshman QB because of that "personality trait" is absolutely rediculous.

And of course it's a pointless thread because everybody "gets a look" in the spring, walk-ons included. I'm guessing it'll be O'Brien's experience (for example playing against an FBS team with a very fast defense) and not Stig's "loyalty" that will make O'Brien our starting QB next year and for a couple of years after that. You could easily make an argument that O'Brien has made a bigger splash as a RS Freshman than any SDSU QB in recent memory.

I'm glad Lotzer is here. If he's the outstanding athlete that people say he is, he'll find his way onto the field in some capacity.
            Holy nutmeg!

You know what they say.....the most popular player on a football team is the backup quarterback.

Some comments on our QB situation. We are in great shape. The bulk of TOB's problems were poor snaps from center as noted by Jacks#1fan. This was not the only game we have had issue's with snaps to the QB. It must be corrected as it disrupts the timing of the entire offense. The speed of the gophers secondary was also something TOB struggled with.

Lotzer........don't be surprised if he ends up playing defense for the Jacks. With his size and speed he would be an excellent safety / corner which he played in high school as well as QB.

The Jacks like everyone else needs a QB that can throw as well as TOB but is also a threat to pickup some yards when necessary with his feet. We do not have that in TOB. NOTHING breaks the spirit of a defense more than a QB that drops back to pass and tucks the ball under his arm and picks up 20 yards. TOB is pretty one demensional at this time. It makes playing defense on the Jacks much easier than if the QB is also a threat to run the ball.

Great effort by the Jacks vs the MN. All you can ask for from your team is to have a chance to win at the end of the game - and we had a couple of those chance's.

Need a win at Western and all things well be good in Jackrabbit land.

Re: Lotzer deserves a look next spring

I think once it's firmly ingrained in the coaching staff's mind, especially when someones played that position for a while , it'd be awfully hard to go with someone else, even if they would be slightly better. So , unless anyone really wows the coaching staff, it'll probably be TOB for the next three years.(unless he really has a bad year, because it's all based on performance in the long run)

                    O'Brien, Whittier, Lotzer, maybe Sumner.

Should be a good battle in the spring, great to have options and competition for the spot and also have Mondol back for his senior year competing for the spot as well.

It will be O'Briens job to lose, but as we saw this year the coaches will give everyone an opportunity to win the job.

Is everyone already writing off Mondol because he had a rough fall and some personal stuff?

By the way, I think Loetzer has an E in it. If you are going to pump up a specific person at least care enough to spell his name right.

Re: Lotzer deserves a look next spring

                        1) It's "Lotzer". You call enough Madison vs. Sisseton football and basketball games, the name tends to stick.

                        2) Lotzer was a linebacker in high school, not a safety. Not too many QB's can pull off the Linebacker position but he led the team in tackles his senior year.

I think everybody is writing Mondol off because he will be a senior.... and with 2 underclassmen ahead of him I doubt the coaching staff would have a senior (especially 1 that transfered in) jump 2 underclassmen....

Since we are speaking pretty much QB's here is there going to be an off season hire to replace Don Bailey? If so that could really shake things up and make spring ball very interesting for everyone.

I don't know if they'll be hiring to replace him specifically. I think Shannon Moore has done a great job as the QB coach this year and should stay on in that capacity. I personally know Shannon and he is a special individual. GREAT coach and even better person.

I don't know the new TE/RB coach that replaced Moore. But I have noticed the TE/RB's have played well. Maybe we have a good thing in place with the current coaching staff. I will agree that our offense could use a little more of a shakeup in terms of playcalling at times.

However, that's pretty hard to do at a Big Ten opponent with a Freshman QB. You just don't throw out the whole smash with a new guy. It's hard enough to just play the basics in that situation.

SOME OF YOU ARE CRAZY. Sanchez for the jets throws 6 picks in one game and I didn't see anybody call for his head. Last week stafford for the lions threw about 6 picks at seattle and he got to play yesterday. These are rookie's who are building their careers. TOB is building his career. He will be the starter next week and next year. TOB did not play anywhere near as bad as these 2. He's proved he can play.
