    Re: Pk Riefenrath?

Isn't this the role of the new academic coordinator position that Melum accepted? This isn't her doing of course - she may have to clear it up though.

Again, this is not an academic advising issue. Academic advising and counseling deals with college, university, and Board of Regents requirements for graduation. Compliance deals with NCAA regulations and the NCAA's progress towards graduation requirements. They're two separate and distinct standards. In this case, the issue is one of compliance. That's not what academic advisors are concerned with.

One thing that might be very helpful for fans would be another presentation by someone on campus on the academic process, specially the requirements about progress towards a degree, that is different at the D1 level as opposed to D2. Judging from the cerification process forum I attended a couple years back, several faculty would be qualifed to speak to this issue as a number were involved at that time.

Many of the old NCC D2 die hards were convinced that academics would go out the window with the move to D1. Quite the opposite is true as with D2 regulations the institution and conference can fudge around quite abit and end up with 6th and 7th year seniors. That does not happen at the D1 level. Why do you think there are so many D1 transfers available to NAIA and D2?
Answer academic progress is not up to par to complete remaining eligibilty at the D1 level. Do you think these guys want to be a USF Cougar that bad?

What has stuck with me from this open forum was the importance of student athletes getting a degree. Dr Oien told us at that forum that the presidents at the D1 level a few years back passed a number of requirements that have forced the stuent atlete to progress academically in order to maintain your eligibilty. Its an involved topic in itself, and this is what is keeping PK Riefenrath off the field for the time being. The rules are tougher and surprisely more faculty on campus are involved in the entire process. As I said before, I would without judgement of until the facts are revealed and if the outcome is favorable for Mr. Riefenrath, then I guess I will not really care about the facts or details. Pete is a great kicker.

I understand that it is not an academic advising issue. I thought the new academic coordinator role for the athletic department was to work with the athletes to be sure they are compliant, etc. She is employed by the athletic department after all. Laurie Melum is not their advisor is she?

Sorry, I misunderstood your post. Yes, I suspect she has been involved in the aftermath of this, trying to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Again hanging on to my recall of the certification forum, Dr Oien mentioned that grants were available from the NCAA for hiring people to fill the position that Laurie Melum recently filled. Fred also said that they were going to apply for the grant and it apparently was approved so what Laurie is paid is mostly likely coming from the NCAA. I too suspect that Laurie is trying to prevent this from happening in the future, and if she is as detailed in the new job as she was as coach, we are not likely to have many eligibilty problems. Certainly not like Peter Riefenrath is now experiencing.

TV just tweeted that the waiver has been granted.
