Also, it really isn't fair to compare yards with a QB and RB. Of course a QB is going to have a lot more yards then a runningback. In the NFL, QB's routinely throw for 3,000+ yards a year. RB's rarely run for 2,000.

And please don't assume I'm saying this cause I'm a USD fan. I'm just trying to play devil's advocate. I'd say Ryan Berry has every right to be considered MVC OPOY
I wasn't comparing yards to yards. I was making the case that one player was dominant throughout the conference season, while the other had great days against inferior competition and average days against the better teams in the conference. Surely consistency is a requirement for the offensive player of the year.
    Holy nutmeg!

Well at the end of the post I quoted you said that Berry had "more yards, more TD's, more total points" which are all categories that are greatly slanted in the QB's favor.

And again, some of that no doubt has to do with the talent surrounding both players. Both are pretty deserving as far as I'm concerned.

The way I look at it is both had really good seasons.... Berry's team had a better record.... On the other hand its hard to get of the years as a newcomer to the conference.

I suspect it's as simple as not wanting to give the newbie school the MVP in their first year of competition. Or, as stated upthread: politics.

Yeah, in 16 games. Berry did it in 12.

The exact number wasn't even part of my point. I wasn't comparing Berry to NFL QB's. I was using the NFL numbers to show how it QB's usually rack up better stats than RB's when they are compared side by side.

Either way, I think SDSU should be proud of the way Berry performed this year. He doesn't need some award to validate how well he, and the entire Jacks offense played this year. They were fun to watch.

Yeah, I wrote that sentence so you'd ignore everything in the paragraph before it.

It's obviously a political decision. The gigantic egos of some coaches and the narrow minds of many SIDs and beat reporters wouldn't let them pick a newcomer for offensive player of the year.

No I agree with everything else, JJ. The only problem I had with your post was that part, so that was the part I addressed.

Berry having better stats against better teams is a valid argument.
Berry not receiving the award because he was a new guy is also a valid argument.
Berry receiving the award because he has better stats (an argument that you have used in this thread, and then denied using) is not a valid argument. That's all my post was trying to say. I wasn't trying to say that he wasn't deserving or shouldn't receive the award. And I wasn't ignoring the rest of your post.

I was even more suprised to see today that Herb is one of the three finalists for the Walter Payton. Though the Walter Payton has Armanti Edwards written all over it.

I would have picked Herb third for offensive player of the year behind Warner & Berry.

Here are the rankings/stats I posted in a similar thread. Forget the comparison between Berry and Donaldson, because it's not even close. Minnett had comparable numbers and played better competition, played on a pass-first team, and shared the workload to a certain extent.

"Ryan Berry (SDSU-QB) - 1st in Passing Yards (by a mile), 1st in Total Offense, 2nd in Passing Efficiency.

Herb Donaldson (WIU-RB) - 1st in Rushing, 1st in Scoring, 2nd in All Purpose Yards, 8th in Total Offense

Larry Warner (SIU-RB) - 3rd in Rushing, 1st in All Purpose Yards

Just to put things in perspective on the running back numbers.

Minett (SDSU-RB) - 2nd in Rushing, 2nd in Scoring, 3rd in All Purpose, 10th in Total Offense."

Berry was the best offensive player in the league and was 2 plays away from tying for the conference title and taking his team to the playoffs. It's a no brainer, but he was ultimately hurt because the rest of the coaches were not giving it to a new guy - no way.

Can I get an AMEN!! Ryan deserved the recognition but got screwed by the ignorant, **** happens. He is on his way to much bigger and better things now anyways. Not sure we can say the same for Herb, maybe you could, just not sure.

Very well crafted argument. Comparing the numbers by positional rankings is a much more accurate metric. Great post.

Here is the story from the Register with some quotes from Stig:
For as good of a season as the Jacks had, it was only a matter of time before the players received conference recognition .

On Monday, nine Jackrabbit football players were named to the All-Missouri Valley Football Conference Teams, including first-team selections Danny Batten, Ryan Berry and JaRon Harris, while three Jacks made honorable mention.

"You have to play together to be a good football team," says head coach John Stiegelmeier. "Ryan Berry's accolades start with him, but it's because of a great job by the total offense.

"Danny Batten's the same way; everyone helps him create his opportunities."

Berry finished runner-up for MVFC Offensive Player of the Year, which went to Western Illinois running back Herb Donaldson. Batten came in third for MVFC Defensive Player of the Year, which went to Northern Iowa defensive linemen James Ruffin.
