With conference title and playoff hopes on the line, the Jackrabbits faced a tough challenge against No. 9 Southern Illinois (8-2, 6-1). SDSU (6-5, 5-2) watched its playoff hopes fade away late in the game as the Jacks fell 38-35 to the Salukis in front of 5,829 fans at a frigid McAndrew Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

"It was a big loss," said Glen Fox. "We knew at the beginning of the game that we needed to win the game; it was a league road game. You know your season's not over with until next week."

The Salukis struck first on a 2-yard touchdown run by Richard White 4:24 into the game. SDSU responded when Ryan Berry hit a wide open Glen Fox for a 49-yard pass play to set the Jacks up at the 1-yard line. Kyle Minett found paydirt on the next play to tie it up at 7-all near the end of the first quarter. Southern Illinois returned the following kick 89-yards for the touchdown. Glen Fox set SDSU up with six catches on the next drive including a 5-yard catch for a touchdown to tie it up at 14-all early in the second quarter.

"I thought it was really bad football in the first half in all phases," said Jacks head coach John Stiegelmeier. "We knew their kickoff return was really good, and we tried to do some things but didn't come close to executing. Consequently, it was advantage Southern Illinois. We just didn't get the job done."

BROOKINGS - A triple-overtime loss to McNeese State in early October had a short run as the most gut-wrenching in the John Stiegelmeier era at South Dakota State.

On Saturday, the Jackrabbits gave up two returns for touchdowns and threw an interception near the red zone with one minute remaining in a 38-35 loss at ninth-ranked Southern Illinois. The defeat ended SDSU's hopes of reaching the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs and winning the Missouri Valley Football Conference in their first go at each.

Adding insult to injury, the power to the team's trailers was accidentally cut Monday because of construction work at the Dykhouse Center.
