But on the other hand, I'm not sure how it would affect the regular ticket holder's ability to attend the game being midweek, or if they can schedule another team on a thursday night that late in the season.
If they were to schedule a game on a Thursday night, it probably would have to be against a local school looking for a payout. I doubt a school like Cal Poly or a conferenece foe would want to travel in the middle of the week to play a game on a Thursday night. I can't see us drawing more than 8,000 fans against a lower level local school anyway. Now that we are in a conference I would just tell the MVFC to schedule a conference game away for that weekend every year.

I would agree with the notion of a Thursday game not being likely, and correct me if I am wrong, but it seems most of the current Thursday games happen because of national television contracts. We got a long ways to go to be consider for any of those deals.

As I have said previously an idea of a Pheasant bowl game or outdoors sports in general is a good idea, but it would require a great deal of work to get it started. I dont think we should give up on that idea.

I also agree with NorCalJack and Nidaros when it comes to Thursday games. I don't think a Friday game would sit well with any of the high schools in the area, and I don't think we should be competing with them. My only concern with asking the conference to send us on the road that weekend is if the other schools would be agreeable to it, or does it create scheduling issues if every school started to ask for a special weekend on the road? Just wondering ...

We've been successful with the Beef Bowl, Cereal Bowl, Pork Classic, Lamb Bonanza, Corduroy Classic, etc. I think if we could tie the outdoor groups, the GF&P, etc into a Pheasant Bowl, it would be a great way to raise money and awareness for the Wildlife and Fisheries program. And it could even be the be the game before if we are on the road on pheasant opener weekend.

BTW, I wasn't able to make the game last night, but I did talk to someone who said he had a buddy from SF who decided to hunt in the Brookings area AND go to the game ... all because we were playing at home.

I seriously think someone needs to take these ideas to the athletic department, and see what they think. To quote Bruce Springsteen: "From small things, mama, Big things one day come"

          Re: Season Opener Solutions

I think the best solution is to ask the MVFC to schedule us on the road or a bye week for that Saturday every year, even if we have to offer to travel the last week of the season to guarantee that the southern teams of the conference won't have to play in the late Novermber cold in Brookings. We usually can't draw a good home crowd at the end of the season anyway unless it is a rivalry game.

I would go in this order
            1. bye week- the coaches/players hunt also
            2. road game- how hard is it to schedule a road game for that week the conference wants high attendance also and scheduling a game on the road would help with that
            3. a thursday night game- Cal-Poly wouldn't work but Northern Iowa would.

This article is primarily about the O-line play this weekend, but there is a quote at the end relating to SDSU's request to the MVFC for no scheduled home games during future pheasant season openers.

A good move I'd say, lets people go hunting and relax rather than rushing back to town for the game.
