Sure, we have some rules and regulations but nothing like what i read here.

The rule for tailgating time for the reserved tailgating spots is you are not supposed to be there before noon on Friday (but that can be fudged without too much repercussions) and you have to be gone by noon on Sunday.

And if you go to my tailgating pictures of the individual games at Doc's Shots you can see that there are no problems at all with any open type containers of alcohol beverages. We even have two frozen drink establishments across the stree from the Westside Tailgating area.

We have rarely have any trouble at all in our spots but our security is provided by off duty officers hired from the marshal and the sheriff offices not the McNeese Police Department.

We did have one problem a few years back of kids going around stealing beer out of unattended ice chests during the game. Now, when you leave for the game, you have to put your ice chest in a secure spot (like locked in your vehicle) or security will seize it.

We do have two new rules that are causing a little controversy but most of the hardcore tailgaters have welcomed the rules because there is a huge waiting list for renting the spots for the season. One rule is that if your spot goes two games without being used, the spot can be seized and rented to the next person on the waiting list. Second new rule is that spots have to be used for tailgating. You can not purchase the spots just for parking cars for the game. If no tailgating is going on and the spot is just being used for parking, the spot subject to be seize and rented to the next person on the tailgating waiting list.

As you can probably tell, our reserved tailgating spots on both sides of the stadium are well run and are a money maker for the University. There is a big demand for the spots and a long waiting list.

Right now, we are pushing for water and electricity to be run to the spots even if it raises the cost of renting the spots a few hundred dollars. I'd love to see electricity because it would get rid of all the generator noise.

Below is one of my favorite pictures that I took in our tailgating area years ago. I've caption it a few ways. "You don't want to overload that generator" , "The bare essentials of tailgating", etc.

One last thing. A lot of the McNeese fans will disappointed about the cowbell thing. This is one away game where we thought our cowbells would be welcomed. I'm sure a few McNeese fans will smuggle in what we call "throw away" bells.

    Doc
I like that idea of getting there on Friday. Thats what I am talking about. Oh, and the blender hooked to the generator is great too.

Thankfully this isn't a problem we have to deal with.....yet
Saturday night, a CCU police officer arrested 20-year-old Hunter Pickens and charged him with disorderly conduct.

The students want a student section at Brooks Stadium, want an end to the school’s requirement that students 21 and over to wear wristbands, and want an end to what students call “police harassment” at games.

Pickens said he was leading a group of students in a cheer during the CCU versus Towsen game when an officer told him to sit down, “Finally I asked him why we had to sit down and of course, I spoke up. I pointed out a couple of different crowds that were standing up he hadn’t asked to sit down, so he told me to turn around and put me into custody,” Pickens told News13.

The officer then booked him into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center where he spent five and a half hours.

“It’s kind of making everyone feel uncomfortable. Actually at one point, there was more police officers than there were kids at the tailgates,” Pickens said.

Pickens said he wasn’t drinking and the officer had no reason to arrest him for standing up in the stadium and cheering for his team.

“I’m taking it right now that there are two sides to the story and we’ll sit down and review it and see what we need to do going in to the next game,” CCU Dean of Students, Haven Hart said.

Thanks bluehatman. I was told about this thread last night by the Chief but I did not realize I was going to be greeted before I even had a chance to register or post. And for the record I do not "play" on facebook or other community websites. At the direction of Chief Heaton (and always with my actual name and rank); I provide facts when misinformation runs a muck, clarification when it is clearly needed and protection when safety issues become apparent. Protecting the SDSU community transcends the physical realm of campus, internet based crime is here and someone needs to patrol cyber space.

As far at the topic of this thread goes, it seems that a number of people here have already clarified things nicely and without any input from me. I would be willing to bet they are the same people who I see in the tailgate area enjoying themselves, supporting SDSU athletics and respecting one another. We appreciate and thank people like that for making the Backyard the kind of place/event it is supposed to be.

        See you on Hobo Days.

I must admit, I'm not keen on PD posts on lawful discussion boards.

Lt. Kilber's post was very friendly and cordial, but nonetheless it has a Big Brother feel about it that might silence some people who have a right to express themselves.

As a scholar who has studied law enforcement communication campaigns (specifically, J. Edgar Hoover's FBI) I know that what appears to be a friendly and cordial greeting necessarily carries the message "we're watching" as well. And that might, despite the fact that everyone here is exercising their First Amendment rights, have the effect of silencing some who fear (rationally or not) retribution for what they might say. Conscious or unconscious, that's the effect of these kinds of authoritative communication from law enforcement.

I'm still not buying that its actually a UPO.

If it is, that is hilarious and this thread just entered EPIC territory.

I would say the vast majority of supporters in the Backyard would fall into this respectable and supportive category. It's just too bad they have to be rewarded by seeing an armed UPD officer every five minutes.

Re: Jim Langers Editorial Brookings Register

I haven't said one thing about this thread, but feel compelled to speak up when someone from the UPD decides he needs to come on board. I echo JimmyJack's feelings. I also echo rational thought in I could care less who reads my posts. I have my personal email listed in my User information and welcome anyone's emails. All anyone has to do is send me a PM or an email and I'll give you my name and would welcome any discussion. Having said that, it is not the business of the UPD to be on this board under the guise of protecting the SDSU community from internet based crimes. Coach Nagy and Coach Stig don't come on the board to make statements or in an effort to correct previous points. For one, it's unprofessional. Second, it wreaks of desperation. Until someone on this thread posts a threat or makes some sort of unlawful statement (and claiming Kilber frequents facebook is miles away from an unlawful statement or even a tortious act) the UPD has no business policing the board. If you fell the need to police the board, then you definitely have no business calling out posters on the board in your official capacity.

If I was working for the UPD and my conduct resulted in one of the most distinguished alumni in the school's history to write a letter to the editor in the local paper, I'd be embarrassed. When that letter prompts a discussion thread (amongst generally even keeled posters) on the sdsufan site that is now 8 pages long and won't go away, I would also probably question how I was handling things. The UPD should be a harborer of good times at the football games, not a detriment. If this thread has proved anything its that many feel the UPD is going out of their way to be a detriment. I have no personal knowledge of the incident or the UPD actions because I haven't tailgated at a game for a long time. But, I can say that just reading what's been said on this thread would give me pause if I was Lt. Kilber or anyone else who worked for UPD.

I know this is a little off topic but since we have a UPD officer here I am going to ask this question and maybe he can answer it, so here goes: How come there is one UPD officer that finds it necessary to tell students to get off the rail? We have had several officers pass by us and not one of them has said anything and then this guy comes up, during the same game even, and tells us to get down, why?
