I agree Montana. But I'm not ready to throw the baby away with the bathwater just yet (I get that one right filbert? ).

I know I'm probably one of the bigger homer's around here but this team showed it could do things against a quicker more physical team. Many of the ISU fans told us before hand that this team was going to be different than last year's team. I'll withold final judgement on anything until after I see it in person next Saturday night.

I thought both teams played like crap. My question is, how did we end up injury wise? It looked like Iowa State had more hurt players than we did. If we didn't have any major injuries and the check clears, we had a successful first game against FBS competition.

        I agree

          Well, they were tonight.

If we don't turn the ball over the game is much closer, and possibly a win. If we fix the turnover problem we'll be OK. If we don't it will be a long season.

I think we played OK, except for the #$!$$ turnovers.

I'm chalking this one up as a pre-season game--learn from it and move on.

That game against UC Davis was just a few short years ago. That game didn't set a precedent for what was to come but did seem to inspire the team to become what they wanted to be. That same season we came away with some good victories and just a few seasons later we won the Great West. It hurts to lose a game like this one by the margin that was the final score. But, like that first D-I game a few years ago, let's hope that it serves to inspire the team to become what they want to be. It was our team's first step into the BCS world, and while we don't expect to win many at that level, it does give our team and our coaching staff a true picture of what that level is like and the level of football that can be played.

Cash the check and get the team ready to kick some Missouri Valley butt!

Well, as everyone knows, TO's were the biggy tonight. As I think coach stig mentioned on the show, ISU's players were the same weight, but 2-3 inches taller. It definitely showed on their d-line tonight with Berry. I am impressed with Iowa State's play, they are bigger and faster than last year, and I'll be rooting for them to have a good season (if nothing else, to make it look less bad that we struggled against them). They limit their own TOs and they'll hang tough in the Big 12.

Our D did very well, and without the TOs in tough spots we wouldn't have given up nearly has many points. The offense looked good on occasion, the O-line held up better than I expected. Our running game showed some good potential. We get the turnover problem fixed and I think I'll really like the outcome when we play teams from FCS.

Hopefully we learn from the experience and keep improving. Bring on Youngstown and the Cereal Bowl next week...

Just read Terry's articles over at the Argus site and it sounds like the defensive lineman of ISU might have been a difference maker with their size. I don't for a second think Ryan Berry wanted to throw interceptions, but when you are faced with taller and quicker linemen in your face, I can see where things went wrong. I dont know where you could find a scout team that had size like ISU, but in my judgement size and speed of defensive lineman may be one major difference between FBS and FCS. I can't imagine we learned nothing from this game. I believe we did and it will start show up in subsequent games.

The game films have to have some postives to work with and a list of negatives to work on.

It was a disappointing performance, but we can certainly take a few good things away:

                      1. Our defense is pretty good, particularly the front 7. We knew that, but it was proven out against an FBS team and I suspect most FCS teams will have a hard time with those 7.

                      2. Our running attack improved throughout the game. Kyle Minett ran for 111 yards.

                      3. Pete Reifenrath hit a 36-yard FG. Pete's a great kid and I hope he gets some confidence from that.

                      4. Berry won't have any more games like that.

                      5. Our defensive backfield, a question mark, played pretty well. Conrad Kjerstad and Brock Campbell are big hitters back there.

                      6. We're at home next week against a team we should have beaten last year.
                      Holy nutmeg!

I agree with Jimmy Jack, but just like 5 years ago they started with a disaster then recovered, I believe this will only prepare the under classmen for the games against Nebraska and Ilinois etc. in the future.
I so wanted to be wrong but I was not that surprised with the outcome. One of the main reasons was because of what happened in Div I FB last year to Michigan and even Iowa State. The coaches at Iowa State no doubt did everything imaginable to prepare their guys better. Upsets are a part of sports but last year only provoked the Div I "bear" and I do not expect this year to see as many upsets. That being said I did not see any of the other scores from last night so maybe i'm wrong.

I think it is wrong comparing this game to UC Davis.

The only thing they have in common is that it was the first game on a new stage.

The differences are many, to name a few:
                          1. UC Davis was only 1 year ahead of SDSU in transition.
                          2. SDSU didn't do anything well at all in that game.
                          3. I would say there were several people in jerseys on the sideline that night that basically shrugged their shoulders and said "well, we don't belong here". I am only guessing but from the play on the field that didn't happen last night.
                          4. Similar to #2 but last night coaches had shouldacouldawoulda after UC Davis there was only questions.

I am disappointed in the showing but in the end there were several of us that predicted a loss for SDSU and with 6 interceptions and a fumble SDSU lost to an up and coming mid level BCS team by 27, which is likely better than Baylor will do without the mistakes.

Well, we lost the WNAX signal just before half time. Saw the Argus review. Time to focus on being 1-0 next week.

There are a lot of positives on the game. I'm trying to focus on that, but I expected MUCH better play from a senior quarterback. Defensive linemen who are a couple inches taller than he's used to notwithstanding, his protection was quite good. He has to make better decisions because most of the picks went right to defenders. Right to them. It was like he had a replay of last year's opener...but worse. It might have been best had be been given the bulk of the second half off.

That being said the D played very well. I think the O line was solid, too, although it took awhile to get the running game going. That had a lot to do with the fact that we didn't have any downfield threats so they could bring all of the defenders up. Ryan's completion percentage was decent...but all very short passes. He needs to shore things up. If that happens, I would guess we'll be OK.

OK, so I kind of failed to focus on the positives, eh?

I don't want to make excuses. Ryan played poorly. But those d-lineman were maybe a couple inches taller AND a step quicker than what we normally see. The nice thing about a senior QB who is also a really smart and emotionally mature young man is that he'll shake it off and play better next week. I was at the Youngstown game last year. The Penguins (make up your own joke) have some excellent players, particularly on defense, but I'm confident that Stig's team can handle them.
