    Steve Imming mentioned a possible medical condition may have contributed to the accident and Marty's death. Did Marty have chronic medical illness like diabetes? My memory wants to tell me that he did but I'm just not sure. Several of you were much closer to him than me.

      This is the link to the most recent information I have found. It didn't say anything about a medical condition yet although it does say that Watertown police will be releasing more information later today.

        Well-known high school and college football standout Martin ‘Marty’ Kranz died Monday.

        A preliminary investigation showed that a medical condition caused Kranz to go unconscious and drive into the water, submerging both himself and the tractor he was driving.

        Law enforcement and the county dive rescue team responded to a 3 p.m. call that said a tractor might be in a slough and a man was missing, according to a news release from the Codington County Sheriff’s Office.
        Kranz married Watertown resident Stefanie Petersen last year, after graduating from South Dakota State University in Brookings. He was the son of Matt and Judy Kranz of Watertown and was a physical education and health instructor with the Deuel School District.
        “He was such a good role model for all our athletes and younger kids,” said Doug Schooley, current athletic director at WHS and coach of the 2001 football team.

        A born leader, Schooley said Kranz touched his heart.

        “I hoped somehow I had the wrong news,” he said. “He was the kind of guy that cared about everyone else.”
        “I have seen the two things I value the most in a person (in Marty) ... hard work ... and a man of character,” said John Stiegelmeier, SDSU’s head football coach, in a 2006 interview with The Collegian, SDSU’s student newspaper.

I did not know Marty, but met him when he and 3 other SDSU football players visited my son, Kevin, a SDSU baseball pitcher, at the ICU in Sioux Falls. It takes a very special person to visit a dying friend especially when they are all young. I will hold the Kranz family and Marty gently in my heart and strongly in my prayers. Kim Morsching "

                Marty was a great guy and a tremendous leader. He will be remembered as an great competitor, a gentleman. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Kranz family in this trying time. Martin "Marty" Kranz, Rest in Peace and God Bless

                    Here is the link to the funeral home that is handling Marty's arrangements. The obituary wasn't up just yet but there is a place to put your thoughts if anyone wishes to do so.

                        I'm late on this post, because I have been gone. Marty's death was a real shock. He is one of the best student-athletes we have ever had IMO. Our sincere condolences to Matt and Judy whom we had grown to know as real friends during Marty's career.

                        It is my understanding that Marty had recently had several seizures, and that a seizure while he was operating the tractor led to his untimely death.

                        It just hurts a lot to make a post on this subject.

                          For those here that didn't know Marty or don't know the Kranz family, I think this might best put into perspective the type of person he was and the type of family he came from.
                          I arrived at the memorial service 45 minutes before it was due to start. There was a line from the front of the church back about a block and a half. That was just from the front of the church. We were told by someone there that it had been that way since nearly 5:30.

                            I thread I came across while on Facebook.

                            A good read and an interesting webpage.

                            I had been a couple years removed from the football team and Marty still took the time to visit with me at a game down in Omaha. I had/have nothing but respect for this young man.

                            He looked great in Jackrabbit Blue.
