Definitely a suprise to me. I thought we would shoot up the ladder quite a bit further after that win. Not sure where I thought we would land but higher for sure!

Doesn't make a huge difference since next year we get to finish it on the field!

        Re: New polls out today

I thought we'd move up a little higher than we are but if you consider what teams made the playoffs we are probably in the right spot. And if we were post-season eligible we likely be on the outside looking in and in the same boat as Youngstown. And since YSU beat us, we wouldn't have as strong of an argument as they would.

Actually we would have a stronger argument than UNH, YSU, Ga Southern. For GSU and YSU, they played a sub D-I team. Therefore, they don't have the 7 D-I wins. We do. UNH has fallen to several teams in the CAA. They didn't come close to winning the CAA North. They have also lost more lately. The selection committee looks at how you've done lately, and against what type of competition. That's after looking at 7 D-I wins, and about the 4 losses.

UNH is the FIRST 4 loss team EVER SELECTED. Being the 5 team out of the CAA, they would have jumped to have the Great West represented instead.

I think, as the GWFC champ, we may have even gotten the nod over the EIU 2nd place OVC winner, who has no quality wins OOC.

            Re: New polls out today

I'm just satisfied we finished in the polls for the second straight year.

I'm even more satisfied that next year we'll be playing for a chance to win the Division I Football Championship. It will be tough, but it won't be any tougher than the season we just played.

Rep points for doing way more research than me. Good work putting our argument in perspective!

Agreed, I was thinking high teens but there really isn't any difference between 21st and 18th. Ranked in the top 25 at the end of the season, again. I didn't think I'd be saying that, much less thinking we should have been ranked higher this early in our DI existence. In other words, I'm satisfied.

NDSU would've taken UNH's spot if playoff elligible and I think that would've left SDSU on the outside. It would've been painfull, but I think that's probably what would've happened. The real sticker would've been if the GWFC would've have had an autobid...Yikes!
As that may be, I'm feeling no pain this week!!!!!!!!!

Add in tough games with Western Illinois, UC Davis, and Central Arkansas and I'm guessing we have one of the toughest schedules in the FCS this season. It's amazing how 3 plays (Western Illinois, Youngstown St. and Georgia Southern) could have turned our 7-4 season and a #21 ranking into a 10-1 season and top 5 ranking.

Not going to get any easier next year either with a full Gateway Conference slate in addition to Iowa State, McNeese State, and Cal Poly on the non-conference schedule.

UNI was by far the best team I saw at Coughlin this year. If you recall we led at halftime, but they were a much better team in the second half. Even then would have liked another crack at them with the way were were playing at the end of the year.

TV pointed out in his blog today, that Gentile was not playing in the UNI game due to a broken hand. His prescence in the secondary may have made a significant difference.

It would have completely changed what we would have done coverage wise I am sure. Gentile wouldn't have had to play off the guy 12 yards. His speed and physicality off the LOS would have been a huge plus.
