  • Momentum for next year

I know I should savor the win today, but I'll have to admit I am not much of a b-ball fan and I've already been thinking about next year. Plus, I am too wired after today to do much else. With the Dakota Marker, Conference Championship, New endzone building becoming a reality, and a second year with 63 schollies how great is this for recruiting. This feels like a start to something that will continue to gain steam. Stig has done a great job with limited resources.

You'd have to think that recruiting just got easier for Stig and the coaches.

SDSU is definitely a university on the move now. Good things are happening in Brookings--get on board now at the start of something really special, folks!

Fantastic momentum for next year! What a great job by the seniors who have toiled for the Jacks through this transition period and provided the leadership to bring us to what is certainly a new exciting era for SDSU Football.

Having said that I hope that someone with knowledge of what we have in the cupboard will come forward and tell us something about the new faces we might see next year.

Who are the Redshirts standing on the sidelines that may have an impact and who can we expect to see fill the shoes of those graduating seniors?

What an amazing week for SDSU in all respects. Can we top what has happened this week? The answer is not only CAN WE, but WE WILL. The announcements, conference titles, winning games, huge donations, will certainly serve as the foundation for even more big announcements, conference titles, winning games and huge donations.

        Wow, what a week!

The two instate red shirts this is what I got

Jake Steffen... Michael's younger brother... there dad is the coach and said he is the best player he has ever coached (he also coached Greenway) The guy was on a lot of D-I FBS radar but got in a little trouble with the school (nothing major) and it came down to Wyoming and SDSU and he chose SDSU... will play LB wouldn't be surprised if he started or played good minutes

Brad Iverson.... He's listed at Quarterback but I would be willing to bet that they switch him to WR (there was talk of taking his red shirt off to play WR this year in fall camp) hes a smart kid great athlete tall kid...

Out of staters I know a little about
Jim Ebke was Nebraska Gatorade player of the year... played quarterback and safety but will play LB for the Jacks seems to be a good adition

Dirk Kool another LB 3rd generation Jack was recruited by a lot of D-I FBS schools looks like he could be another great LB

There is a few DB's that could see time but I don't know much about them

I saw about a dozen football recruits talking with the coaches before the game as all of the fans were piling into CAS. I would think a game like that would seal the deal for anyone who was having second thoughts about SDSU!

Here is one thing to think about. Last year, the way that game was lost, drove all of our players to work like they never had before during the offseason. Hopefully they keep that up because you have to know that the Bison are thinking about starting next year already.

The football program actually had 50+ recruits at the game yesterday. I don't think they can experience a better atmosphere.

I think we will be in great shape starting out the season next year. I think we've got alot of young guys on the roster who will step up and take over. Keep in mind that we are just starting to fill out the roster with our 63 scholarship players, we have alot of talent coming up the ranks.

Here's my best effort at looking at next years guys who could see some time. Feel free to add names/comments/etc. Just tossing this out to get some discussion going.

Defensive backfield we lose Koch, Gentile and Hoogeveen:
From what I've heard Cole Brodie and General Parnell are expected to compete for corner and Jim Ebke may be moved from linebacker to strong safety. Also have freshman Conrad Kjerstad who saw some good reps this season. We lose alot of experience but I think may gain some speed/quickness.

                  Linebackers we lose Justin Kubesh:
Sophomores Jimmie Rogers, Chris Johnson and Isaiah Jackson all return and Derek Domino, Steffen Giesler, Jake Steffen, Dirk Kool, and other youngsters will compete. We should have another great LB corps next year.

Defensive Line we lose Pontrelli and Bonwell:
Have a ton of young guys back in Eric Schroeder, Jason Nobiling, Danny Batten, Steven Bazata. Also add in Antonio Thompson, Kyle Sheehan, Ross Basham, Jared Crumly, Brian Fischer and some other young guys and I think we are in great shape at this position as well.

Offensive skill positions we lose TE Chris Wagner, RB Cory Koenig, RB Trevor Hohn (if he isn't eligible for medical red-shirt), WR Chris Doblar, WR Paul Aanonson, TE Matt Anderson:
Some big names leaving us here in Koenig and Wagner. I think we should be in really good shape for RB with Minnett and Monke being back plus adding red-shirt Dominique Clare who I've heard the analogy of "Anthony Watson with speed". Have heard Stig comment on Shonka a few times and can add in sophs Glen Fox (who was huge at the end of the year) and Mike Steffen, and juniors JaRon Harris and Saunder Montague. Beyer, Cochart and Kavanaugh will have to fill the void of Anderson and Wagner.

Offensive line we lose Preston Crumly, Mitch Erickson, Luke Witte, and Dusty LeBrun:
Junior starters Kevin Robling and Nick Flesner and Sophomor starter Casey Bender return. Add in sophs. Casey Knips and Nate Koskovich, fresh. Ryan McKnight and Zach Buchner to compete for spots next year. Again, I think we have guys who can step up and compete next year.

Special Teams we lose K Parker Douglass and return specialist Paul Aanonson:
Two tough losses and don't really know much about our young kickers. We have a history of producing good ones so hopefully that holds true again next year. Aanonson will be a tough loss from our strong return game, hopefully we can find a good replacement for him as well.

I think you have all touched on the makings of another great Jack's Football team. I have not missed a game this year and man did they grow up from the start. Just hope Stig and the coaches can get them started early next year. Iowa State - That will be a great win, and one that the Jack's stand a great chance at. We start with a win there and hold on for a great season. As far as the team - I see a ton of talent coming back. Soph's have proven themselfs worthy of starting this year or being starters for next. If you looked at the red shirts on the side lines this year they look even more athletic then the red shirts before and so on as a group. Got to think that Saturday will do nothing but help this year's recruiting. Finally - I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT SEASON - GO JACKS. PS - We had to leave Brookings last night for commiments today. Hope they left the town in tack, but it was a great night to be a part of the Jack's Family and will be looking forward to more. Best of luck to all the other sports, and GO JACKS.

Downtown was rockin' last night. Definitely had a Hobo Day feel to it and everyone was very excited. Football players and their families were present and it was nice to see them celebrating. Hopefully everyone made it home safe!!!

I have to think a game atmosphere like the one on Saturday, a conference championship and the new facility on the horizon will pay big dividends on the recruiting front. We will find out in February! You have to like our situation at the Quarterback Position. We have Berry back for his senior year, Ryan Crawford is a Junior, Corey Jeske a Sophmore and Brian Iverson a redshirt Freshman. Additionally, Marcel Jones I assume will be part of the mix and Tommy O'Brien from Winona will be an incoming freshman. I would not be surprised if the 6'5 Iverson ends up at tight end. Did any of the above separate themselves from the rest in practice to be the #2 behind Berry? It was wonderful to have a healthy quarterback all year.

It was also nice to have a generally healthy team all year. We didn't get plagued with the injury bug this year like we have in the past. I can't say I know for sure why but I'm willing to bet our rather new Strength and Conditioning coach, Nathan Moe, might have something to do with it! He was on the sidelines last Saturday and he was as pumped up as anyone.

I would not be surprised to see Crawford either switch positions or leave the team. According to some he hasn't really amounted to his hype and has kind of been a let down. There will be a quarterback battle this spring and into fall camp. We have some good QBs in our system and it will be a heated battle to see who starts.
