The only knock on Parker that I know is that he is kind of quiet and in the background on the sidelines and isn't among his teammates during the games. This from the Jets scout at the Western Illinois game, who was also worried how the extra five yards on kick offs would affect Parker's game.

            Re: Parker Douglass

Kickers always have some quirks about them. I think they have to be a little off to be a kicker in the first place. Brett Gorden was probably the most normal kicker I've known.

I haven't seen Parker at all nor have I followed his career. But, knowing the quality of some of the kickers we've had in the past who didn't get a sniff at the NFL he may be a long shot. Best of luck to him. He's going to need a work ethic like Vinny to get to the top at the next level. That's the one big thing that will separate a kicker from the competition.

Bingo. Caught part of the NFL films special about Vinny on ESPN over lunch break today, pretty darn good.

I'm amazed that I saw Vinatieri break the school record for longest field goal...2 games in a row, even.

Then, I saw Parker break that record. It's amazing I saw all of these.

Parker can make it in the NFL. I've no doubts. Remember he's been kicking 1/2 his games at CAS...lots of wind...not always the best conditions.

You put him in a dome, or a good weather city...He'd be as automatic as it gets. Plus, the hashmarks are closer to the middle in the NFL.

Parker was kicking 45-yard FGs INTO the wind warming up for the Hobo Day game.
                  Holy nutmeg!

The best part about watching Parker is watching him make tackles on kick-offs. I know for a fact he had one in each of the last two games. He tackles like a DB.

                    Funny to see.

One of the highlights of the Vinny feature on ESPN was his tackle on Herschel Walker as he was ended for the endzone. Parcells commented that Vinny was a "football player" not just a kicker. I agree with bits, Parker isn't afraid to make a play.

Vinny was/is an athlete...period. He was putting up more in the weight room that most skill players on O or D, heck even some LB's and a certain tight end that shall remain nameless.

I appreciate the distance of all the record kicks that Vinny, Gorden and Parker have put up, but I'd like to see what they could do in a game situation with no wind at their backs. I know Vinny's came with a very favorable gust at his back (I was playing in those games), I saw Gorden's (nice breeze), and I would imagine Parker's 57 yarder had some wind too. Not trying to discount their abilities, just putting in perspective.

Good point. Parker has made a tackle on a kickoff in each of the last two games.

I said it on the game thread, he needs to make that kick. All the praise he has received is appropriate but he needs to make that kick. Someone tell me I'm flat out wrong.

Well, I didn't see it, but Stig related to poor execution on the part of the team on that kick, so don't know what that was about. But while we expect Parker to make that because he's been so great, we put huge expectations on him. I'm more disappointed with the holding penalty that cost us a first down when we were driving and going to score; on the play calling which had Berry run on third down instead of pounding Cory in again, when he was lighting it up; on the decision to call a pass play with 40 seconds left and give them the only chance they had to win the game. There is plenty of blame to spread around, but if the Jacks hadn't played their hearts out getting back into the game, I would be even more disappointed.

I understand all of that and share your sentiments, but Parker needs to make that kick. I'm not saying he needs to make it for me, I'm saying for this team, this year, he needs to make that kick. They expect him to. Does that make any sense? I'm not blaming him for missing it, just saying he needs to make it. I don't know Parker but I bet he would agree.
