  • House Settlement

Sell has repeatedly said SDSU is not going to opt in. A growing number of FCS schools have said they are opting in, including USD, which announces earlier this afternoon.

t's hard to see the down side of opting in at this point. SDSU was slow to adapt to things like cost of attendance and NIL. Are we going to be bringing up the rear here, as well?

If for nothing else, when it comes to pay for play, if SDSU opts in, your contribution to the athletic department will be tax deductible where your contribution to the NIL collective are not.

I'd caution against turning this thread into another "I'm done with college athletics" bit or a rant against NIL/House settlement, etc. It's all been done before. Its the way it is. Save your finger tips.

When Justin Sell did his interview with Gaskins a few months ago, he said that the main reason he was leaning towards opting out was because being in the program would cause about 75 athletes to lose their spots on teams. Don't know if that's the case with the final settlement.

The real question is what will college athletics look like in 5 or ten years on whether you should opt in or not today? I don’t have that answer. I would imagine Sell has a pretty good idea what’s coming.

Grandfathered. Big reason why USD changed its tune. Nobody is losing a spot.

Sell has done a remarkable job as AD but has been behind the curve on global policy stuff.

Agreed. It sounds like we'd be the one of the only big FCS schools opting out which concerns me.

The rules relating to opting in changed recently. SDSU still has a couple of weeks to make a decision, as I understand it. I wouldn't be surprised if SDSU opts in now, too. But I don't know what the fine print requires.
              This space for lease.

The penultimate Happy Hour provides some additional context and suggests SDSU should get us answers within the next week.

Per Matt Zimmer, it sounds like we are opting in

SDSU social media makes it official. Probably the right decision with the recent changes. https://x.com/gojackssdsu/status/193...CCH1LiyBdvIOvw

A few questions now being asked:

                      1. What "student" athletes will now be paid? I assume FB, MBB and WBB. Maybe VB? In what proportions. I believe the U of Minn is paying 70% of its pot to FB.
                      2. What will the revenue be that is shared? While the athletic department produces revenue, it does not have positive margins.
                      3. This will undoubtedly necessitate cuts. What sports will be on the chopping block?
                      4. What role will NIL play? If I'm going to contribute to paying athletes, it will now make more sense to donate to the athletic department (tax deductible) than the NIL program.
