  • NIL Announcement

The recent NIL announcement by Learfield (https://gojacks.com/news/2025/1/3/ge...acked-nil.aspx) has me wondering to what extent the lack of NIL at SDSU may have impacted the coach(es) decisions to leave. As we know, sometimes it takes someone leaving for decision-makers to realize how significant an issue is. It happens all the time – a coach or manager tells their boss, either this happens or I leave. It has been somewhat surprising that an organized initiative hadn’t happened yet (in my opinion). From what I’m seeing, other places have navigated this by including the foundation or creating an entity closely related to athletics. Regardless, I can only hope that this will provide the money to retain players and take the pressure off Ryan McKnight - the dude is an absolute rock star for what he has done for the football team.

And, let’s face it – 99% of us would leave to triple or quadruple our salary. Good luck coaches, at least this fan will be rooting for WSU and that ugly flag at ESPN gameday.

And, Dan Jackson is an incredible recruiter and we are very fortunate to have him.

Thinking about the NIL, is there anyway we can use the spring game as a means of raising money for the collective? The couple of times I have gone to the spring game, it is kind of boring.
    1) bring in a team to scrimmage against-not sure if that is allowed, but it would bring in a lot of people. Even if it wasn't a traditional scrimmage, have the #1s one end of the field and the #2s at the other end. Mix it up somehow.
    2) Have a cheer clinic. The cheerleaders can charge $20 for their coffers and when the kids perform at some point of the scrimmage you sell tickets to their parents
    3) charge $20 admission or $15 and a can of food for the food bank.
    4) Have a punt, pass and kick competition. You set up multiple stations and run them during breaks in the scrimmage. Also, sell tickets to their parents that come to watch them compete.
    5) have a massive 3 on 3 basketball tourney in the parking lot before the game.
    6) NIL 5k run/walk in the morning
    7) sell tickets for breakfast with the team-buy a ticket, get a plate of food and listen to some of the coaches and player talk before the game
    8) have a tractor pull, but replace the tractor with a tricycle and little kids
I feel like the spring game has potential to be more than just a scrimmage.
One hand points to campus...the other to the liquor store.

This thread needs a bump and a lot more action. After reading Tanner's story and hearing directly from Chase Mason and Quinten Christiansen I did something I never thought I'd do. I made a NIL contribution. $50 a month. If you love SDSU football and this team, contribute what you can. $5/month. $10/month, whatever. We have some f****ing legends still on this team. Let's give them what they need to compete.

I wonder if a portion of Difference Makers Club donations could be allocated to collective. For instance, if a person makes a $500 Difference Makers donations, they could request that $200 go to collective

Also, I still think collective should sell shirts with the "burn the ships theme" and a stoic jackrabbit standing on shoreline with a carrot clenched in his teeth a la Buccaneers logo. Current trials and tribulations could be signified with a bandaged ear

            Our collective stinks.

Why are they not selling stuff or hosting events like every other collective does???

What regime? The football coaches don’t run the collective. It should have been outsourced but instead the athletic department decided they need to control is. The athletic department has had 2.5 years. NDSU is kicking our ass and keeping players like Bryce Lance while we lose 4 running backs a week to some school out west in a conference of 2 teams.

                  McKnight wasn't in charge before.

Comparing NDSU to the Jacks now is misleading because the Jacks lost the entire coaching staff. Sure, their collective was started in July 2023, but I'm not sure what all of the factors are that contributed to delays here, but I know that 605 site was essentially an ambiguous GoFundMe.

Been a 30+ year financial supporter and season ticket holder. I'd consider giving to the fund the moment the NCAA puts guardrails in place. Right now we have the Wild West going on. Professional teams have salary caps for a reason - the attempt to keep the playing field somewhat level - thus maintaining fan interest.

Where does it say McKnight is in charge? He isn’t listed on the collective website at all. It’s all SDSU athletic department employees.

JI indicated that as breaking news on their pod (24:41 mark). The "collective" can work in concert with that NIL initiative.

                        Confusing?

Maybe now we're getting a feel for why things have taken time. You see a similar collaboration at NDSU where they have Green and Gold Collective and NDSU Exchange.

As I mentioned earlier, I don't believe McKnight can work for SDSU and the collective, so maybe transitioning any duties he had with Econ Dept to an adjunct might be another reason for delayed movement

And the coaching staff can have input. During Justin Sell's interview with Zimmer and Gaskins he indicated that during the interview process Dan had ideas for the collective that he would be sharing. But as important as the collective is, I'm sure finding players to fill out the roster is likely a higher immediate priority right now.

I should've posted about this when I heard it during specific interview, but I am almost certain one of the interviewees praised McCormick and NFL Jacks for ponying up some cash, in addition to devoting time to discussing situation with players.

Tanner Castora might be able to add a documentary regarding this situation to that book he's mentioned.

What would your thoughts be on Castora taking on some of Kracht's duties?

I don't know if that's the spot for him, but there must be position somewhere in the Athletic Dept. to take advantage of his talents.
