Yeah, it was highly disappointing to only have 10k yesterday, but the program was built on the support of fans far and wide, so we don't need to shame folks who aren't able to make it to Brookings.

Having said that, if you've been to Brookings in the past couple years, you've likely noticed considerable growth, so it's frustrating that we couldn't at least get to 12k yesterday.

Rave: Playoff games are another breed, and yesterday didn't disappoint. Had a new dude sitting next be to who was a fellow bleacher stomper who really helped make the game even more fun.
Rave: Bock's pick 6 was awesome, and I'm glad he didn't have to worry about more ribbing for a "trip 6." Hoping he moves into second on the career tackles list next week.
Rant: If Griz mascot Monte is going to bring his ursine rump into Section 120, at least have the courtesy to not impede fan traffic with his baby bear steps in the aisle.
Rant: If you're going to "upgrade" your seats from the "cheap ticket" sections to the "premium" locations, maybe make it a "one and done" when you're caught instead of just shifting to another seat that someone else has paid for and just hasn't gotten to. Doing otherwise causes congestion in the aisles when folks who actually purchased the tickets are wondering if they're in the right section (as the aforementioned bleacher stomper was yesterday).

I concur with Bozemaniac. I live close enough to go to every game and sometimes cannot make a game. It happens. I make playoff games a priority because the atmosphere is fantastic. Yesterday, with 10,000 spectators, was nearly as loud as games with 19,000 and way more exuberant. Playoff games are special. Charge up the electric socks, bundle up and come on out.

I found it rather humorous that Montana had their heated benches for a game with temps in the mid to upper 40s.
in regards to the attendance there are just a lot of things going on at this time of year for hs and youth sports- basketball, wrestling, hockey, gymnastics, etc, etc.
It was a beautiful day to be on the E side of the stadium.

I did not attend, here is why.
              1. We had a family Christmas with an entire extended family. When choosing a date for a Christmas that involves 40 people, I am not going to selfishly say that "no weekends in December work for my family because of a high probability the Jackrabbits are hosting a playoff game each weekend." Seeing family from several different generations who live in different states will always trump just about anything, including SDSU football.
              2. We live 3 hours away. Generally not a big deal, but it does make for a 12 hour day by the time you drive there, tailgate, watch the game, drive back.
              3. Family of 5 - if we all go, it gets expensive. Generally not a deal breaker, but it does factor into how many games we attend each year and who all goes to each game. We usually do 1-2 games as an entire family and another 1-2 with some portion of us.
And I will not attend this weekend either. One of our children has a basketball tournament on Saturday and my kids sports will always go above SDSU sports. If we happen to host a semifinal game, I also will not attend - we have Christmas at the in-laws. If we make it to Frisco, I will attend.

Have you ever posted something and then re-read it later and wish you could delete it? That is where I am at. I don't want to be the guy that shames people into attending a football game. If you are sitting in your living room in Sioux Falls and going to watch it on TV, hop in your car, pay the $10 and watch it live. It is soo much better. Between holiday gatherings and kids activities it is hard to make every game work, I get it. I raised kids and had their activities to attend. If you are hemming and hawing about going, go. You won't regret it.

I wish we had data on the number of Brookings residents who attended games earlier in the season who opted out of attending and chose to stream the game instead, excluding those with family commitment, mobility issues, etc. I mean the ones who could have gone but just chose to watch online instead

What would the data be used for? Not really seeking an answer to that question. We can't have blackouts like a pro-team. We don't want to bother potential fans with another survey! I think the attendance numbers will generally continue to increase: SDSU should continue to strive to produce teams that are competing for championships and those of us who think its a great time to attend outdoor football games during the winter should continue to talk it up.

I'm just 45 minutes away from the stadium. My wife and I have missed two football games at SDSU since the 2009 season (and probably even prior to the 2009 season but that's stretching my memory). I share the comments made by others about how the playoff games are some of the most fun. I don't know where the characters come from but the constant noise and banter at the playoff games is hilarious. Most of the time the weather is quite tolerable and for those few really cold ones, or snowy ones, I've acquired the right gear to remain comfortable throughout the games

SDSU home playoff games: Easiest way to enjoy a 16 oz. beer that stays cold to the last drop. Example: For the 12/17/22 Montana State playoff game, the official box score lists the temp at kickoff as 9. That's a lie. It was 7. And at halftime, the temp had sunk to 3. Within minutes of setting one's beer on the aluminum-bleacher floor, it formed ice crystals. Best beer ever without the temptation of having too many.

The data would be more to satisfy my curiosity about how many of that cohort stayed home instead of of traveling a couple miles to an awesome game.

They'd theoretically be the low hanging fruit most likely to boost attendance and less susceptible to inclement weather that could hamper folks commuting even the distance you and your wife do

Not sure what the benefit would be for fans to have that information? We should caution against berating casual fans for not being dedicated enough. We should just work to keep them engaged.

SDSU’s announced attendance was 3 more than NDSU’s with a metro that is 1/5 the size and similar capacity stadiums. NDSU also has the benefit of being environmentally controlled for those who don’t like the weather they choose to live in.

If you check my prior posts, I'm not berating anyone. It's just counterintuitive to me that Brookings' population would increase as much as I've seen, yet we can't hit 12k last Saturday.

As for the benefit, it'd give me more Jacks-related reading material while I'm enjoying SDSU ice cream

As a reminder, all full-time South Dakota State students are admitted into all home regular-season events with their valid SDSU student ID at no cost! The student section is a key piece of our gameday atmosphere, and nobody brings the energy quite like YOU!
