  • On one hand this win did not feel good, on the other hand USD is very much one of the four best teams in the country and we beat them despite our best efforts to lose. Arguably should’ve beat the Bison as well. So this team is still very much title contenders, just need to get the offense going. Mark was good today so that was a nice improvement.

Next week is a cupcake so at least there’s that.

I agree. Things have to change on offense though, because we're not a championship caliber team with how they've been playing throughout the season against good opponents.

I will say, some of the throws are looking better. That toss to Goering in OT was really good.

        • Defense is absolutely championship caliber. The other 2 units certainly are not at this point in the season.

With this sickly offense, I wouldn't take any team for granted.

            • The offensive play-calling is nothing shy of an abomination. There is no rule against calling something besides draw plays and swing passes. Bland, simple, and predictable to the point a high school JV coach could prep for this offense.
Grumbling along and embracing my role. If I didn't care, I wouldn't care. Go Jacks!

                • It was a terrible and awesome game with State pulling out a victory in OT (I hate football OT).

The prolate spheroid bounces with unpredictable results. USD recovered 2 of their own fumbles with minimal damage and 1 of SDSU's resulting in a TD to tie the game.

I came away certain State has the better team and USD the better OC. On 3rd and short why, oh why is State lined up in a shotgun formation with Amar in the backfield? Still a win is a win giving the OC more time to pull his head out of, whatever.

                  • I have to admit that USD is improved a lot and judging from the FCS teams seen this season, deserves it's #4 ranking. At times it was tough watching the Jacks on offense but one has to concede that the improved USD was a significant reason the Jacks were struggling.

Win or lose, there needs to be a shake up this week. Jacks aren't winning a championship this year. Make a change at play caller and play guys who can contribute next year (without burning redshirts). Can Jack Smith run routes? Block? Gives Woods time in the backfield. Maybe Mark G should develop an injury he's been playing with all year and that's why he's been off. Let Chase take over and Mark can work on his "draft" stock. There is just a vibe about this team that is off.
are you serious? or just blowing off steam without engaging your brain before typing?

we just played back to back games vs 2 top 4 teams. could we have lost both games? you could look at it that way and you would not be wrong. at the same time we could VERY EASILY have won both games!

WAY WAY better day throwing the ball for Mark. 20 of 27 and i can recall at least 5 balls that were in receivers hands that did not get caught.

play calling does feel a bit off. is there a reason we run almost no slants? what about some post routes and stuff downfield? almost everything is an out, a WR screen, or a dump to the RB

we did run for over 160 yards against the top rush defense in the MV, but the YPC were nothing to boast about and i believe it was quite a bit worse in the second half.

i feel like something that I have never seen talked about is that perhaps the O Line is struggling to be consistent? O Line experts what do you think? running lanes seem inconsistent? pass blocking has probably been pretty good and Mark did a lot better job today of not bailing out of the pocket

so anyway, are there some challenges that we have perhaps not had to deal with for the last couple years? YEP
at the same time, we have played a pretty tough schedule and we have one FCS loss and could easily be undefeated

I feel confident to say that there is no team that we are not more than capable of beating!! I believe that we will continue to improve. i very much hope I am correct!!

I see it this way also. Easy to think, why can’t we be just like last year?? Too many new/inexperienced players on offense but getting better. I’m surprised we are where we’re at quite frankly. Team deserves lot of credit. I think will continue to improve.
Im not a coach so I’m not sure at all the plays that should or could be run. Sometimes it seems a little ‘plain Jane’ type offense but I can watch NFL and sometimes see ‘plain Jane’ offense. There must be a reason….they have professional coaches and I’m just an observer!!!

                          • What a night!

It started with a healthy dose of perspective with the Jacks honoring Myles Hupp, a little dude who has been battling burns from a gas line explosion and brain cancer, and his family (Jacks fans who were struck by unfathomable tragedy).

Then, the Jacks had Tom Manzer back on the mic. It's almost like they knew this one would be a classic befitting the return of Jacks legends of yore (we can consider last year "yore," right?)

I'm with Prairiehaas when it comes to typically hating OT games, but, oh man, if OT means seeing Rogers get Halloween started a little early with an homage to Woddy's Zombieland "NUoSU" mantra on a 4th and 1, I'll take it.

Yes, there are aspects of the past couple games that are frustrating (e.g., uncharacteristic fumbles, ill-timed penalties, and malaise on offense), but anyone thinking the Jacks can't challenge any other team is mistaken. There is also much to be excited about -- from Wilde's leaping catch last night to sustain a Jacks drive, to Angel rebounding after the fumble, to Gronowski using his legs to pick up yards.

Lastly, I would say that we should appreciate what we have, because another in-game activity was the Jacks honoring MVFC Commissioner Patty Viverito, who is retiring, and the conference would be foolish not to consider Justin Sell one of the top candidates for that gig.

                            • Ugly win, I can’t help but to feel a bit dirty this morning. On one side, we found a way to win a tough game but I have some major concerns.
USD appears much improved and have impact players at every level that showed up last night. Honestly, I as much as I hate to say it, collectively I thought their lines were overall better on both sides. I think they might be a more difficult match up than NDSU for us. But to be honest, until we open up a deep threat passing game, it will be a dogfight running the ball and check down passing. I do feel like we continue to get outcoached and out schemed a bit, certainly on offense more than defense. I feel like other teams do a better job of utilizing their star players than we do.
as good as the Def has been, our defense has also been vulnerable at times like the ndsu game wining drive and opening drive for usd. USD also left a lot of points on the field last night.
Our team is solid with a lot of good players but we need to continue to improve to make a playoff run. This is a lot different to the last few years where I felt like we just needed to stay healthy.
On to next week, go jacks!

It may be a draw as to whose OC is better. (or worse ). USD brought back memories of Jason Eck with all the trick plays, none of which worked. It eventually came down to the Jacks scoring three offensive TD's to one for the Yotes.
