Exactly right. Couldn't salvage much out of getting the ball 6 (or more?) Inside the 10 yard line with such a high quality defense on the other side.
I'm fired up about FCS possibilities (assuming we didn't lose key players to injury??)

And a number of times they compounded the bad field position with a bunch of false start penalties.

Special teams have been a weakness in Jackrabbit football for many years and continues.
QB is 10-26 for 87 yards. Not good period. Gronowski isn’t 100% and probably won’t be all season. Better play is needed.
OL played bad. Blame it on whatever you want but it’s unacceptable.
First game jitters, maybe but it seems like the same old Stig teams from the past. Not ready, poor coaching, poor play.

What’s funny about that is this game seemed very different from a Stig “let down” game. Every game we’ve played against fbs teams since the loss to Kansas in 2012 has been competitive, and we’ve usually moved the ball well and looked relative sharp. Nebraska in 13 ended up not close, but the rest of them have been great games.

Today was not that way. It was very competitive, but this is the first time in almost a decade that I thought we looked like an fcs team playing a power 5 team. Stig’s big thing with these games is that “we aren’t tourists, we have a job to do, etc”. Our offense was shell shocked before we even kicked off and we absolutely looked like tourists today. Something about today was much different and I don’t think it’s fair to call him this game a same old Stig game.

My guess is the deer in the headlights aspect of today has a lot to do with the number of coaching departures we had in the off season and the youth of the coaches that replaced them. We all kind of glossed over that issue with the talent we have coming back, but it might be a glaring issue with some major growing pains.

The Hawkeyes having three Butkus finalists in their LB corps and a DB of Year is what seems to be getting glossed over. In addition, the pregame discussion centered largely on whether the Jacks would keep score within point spread, which they did by more than halving the line's MoV.

Just curious, did you think any of the Valley teams losing badly (e.g., being shut out) against FBS foes, who didn't have nearly the defense the Hawkeyes do, looked like proverbial FCS versus Power 5 contests? If the Bison lose by more than a FG to a lesser foe when they play Wildcats, would you say the same?

The play calling wasn't the primary issue, as there were plays, such as the post to Janke, and sideline passes to Heins and Bauer that were there. I also think we'll see Wolf more involved in the offense when Jacks aren't pinned deep in their own territory with little to no time to survey the field.

As for coaching departures and replacements, this game bolstered my excitement about Rogers being sole DC and Bobbit returning. If the defense continues to play like they did yesterday, there should be nobody the Jacks can't beat this season.

There's no way the coaches haven't preached that OL should avoid false starts. The staff prepared the players.

What we as fans should be discussing is how we can consistently make DJD as hostile to visiting teams as Kinnick is to Hawkeye foes.

The Jacks are gonna be awesome this season. Their defense already has been. Now we as fans need to get aggro in next week's game against Aggies.

After the long drive back I’ve had time to marinate and think about the game I watched. Start with the good Dline wow sanders and crew consistently where playing in the back field raising hell. Winkelman and crew where constantly hit their QB making him uncomfortable. Bock the strip master and the rotation of LBs tackled well I don’t recall ever saying gotta make that tackle at all. On the back end I can’t remember a lot which is probably a positive stalbird definitely made some plays as a safety. I thought our offense line did pretty well excluding the penalty’s. I can count on one hand how many times their dline was in the backfield. I did feel that they didn’t get to the second level well and get Iowa lbs blocked but it’s just Iowas lb are just that damn good. 2 of the sacks where coverage sacks. My thoughts on the offense are, did losing tucker throw out half the play book? I’m not sure we traveled 3 TE plus Morgan. Iowas punter pinned us deep a lot and we did go conservative to not turn the ball over. In big games like this when Jaden makes a safety lose his jock and has a chance to house one Mark has to connect it to win at it would have. I did see a tweet from Kyle Sheehan who played in the Nebraska game and he said this was the loudest crowd he has ever heard. Which it’s not excuse but a factor. I’m not ready to tar and feather Lujan at all he got dealt a ****ty on 90% of the drives due to field position and penalties. The drive after the pick disappointed me we shot our selves in the foot ounce and it’s ope we will just take a FG to tie. And when it’s late in 4th and all you need is a FG you have to play to win. Special teams Dustman took time to settle in but stepped up on a big FG. Punt return needs some work lol.
Send prayers that Tuckers injury isn’t severe but I’m afraid it is. Don’t remember seeing Fancl after his pick. The new transfer Williams also went down and didn’t return so hopefully we can get those guys back.

sucks that we lost since we sure could’ve won it with that one completion but excited how well the D played.

                      Another awesome post.

If I may add a few rants ...
First, regarding "fans," if a person is saying Gronowski and Lujan suck or should quit after yesterday, I don't want/need them anywhere near me during games. Their "take" is both severely inaccurate and unfair, and I don't think the new brewskis that'll be flowing will improve their judgment.

FS1's "technical difficulties" a couple times during the broadcast were also frustrating. It was like the random Avera minute during the Spring National Championship game.

Lastly, I considered the Hawkeyes one of the P5 team's I root for, so I was disappointed with the number of times I saw what seemed to be shots to Jacks' helmet/head area by Hawkeyes. The incompletion to Bauer was one, and during Francl's interception return, it seemed like a Hawkeye gave him forearm shiver that resulted in Francl exiting game.

Thanks for commenting on OL. It's easy to focus on the penalties, but I agree that they seemed to prevent Hawkeyes' DL and LBs from wreaking much havoc, with obvious exceptions of safeties, which also had field position as a factor.

The O line is going to take some to gel with three new starters plus a position change. Was pleased with the center play, considering it was a concern after the spring game. The one bad mistake was on the sack of Gronowski for the safety when our tackle pretty much wiffed on the DE.

Team depth matters, and it shows in big game. Iowa and other FBS teams are allowed to give 85 scholarships. FCS teams, such as SDSU, can only give 63. It makes a difference, especially in areas such as special teams.

The Jacks appeared to be hit hard by injuries in the Iowa game. Hopefully, most or all of the guys will be back soon. SDSU has a very good team. The defense is great, and the offense will rebound. No team the Jacks play the rest of the season will be as tough defensively as Iowa.

One of the best defenses in the FBS. We just a few too many "new things" occurring with our offense. I am comfortable with the results. Not happy, but things are all correctable. A little coaching should have happened in the endzone on both safeties should have been discussed beforehand, such as telling Isaih there is no room to dance, his sidestep instead of going forward was the difference in that safety. Things are going to be fine
