Sam Houston State Bearkats have one football national championship title: In 1964, SHSU won the NAIA national title, beating Concordia of Moorhead, MN,

SHSU moved from NAIA to NCAA DIAA in 1984.when they joined the Gulf Star Conference. They joined the Southland in 1987. Next season, SHSU moves all sports to the Western Athletic Conference along with fellow, current Southland Conf members Abilene Christian; Lamar; and Stephen F. Austin; plus current Big Sky member Southern Utah U. Other schools joining the WAC for football in 2021 are the following, leaving the Atlantic Sun Conference: U of Central Arkansas; Eastern Kentucky; and Jacksonville State.

UCA, EKU and JSU aren't leaving the ASUN, they are just now joining but neither the WAC nor the ASUN will have enough eligible members to get an AQ bid to the playoffs in the fall. Because of this they are temporarily joining together to create an eligible conference for the upcoming season only.
