Re: Who does Sioux Falls Support

I think the intent of the question is more; "Will Sioux Falls support SDSU at the DI level?"

Thats a good question and if we want 5,000 fans per BB game and 10-15,000 for FB we will need a nice fan base in Sioux Falls.

I'd like to see it work like Ames/Des Moines on a smaller scale of course. Des Moines probably has more Hawkeye fans than Cyclone fans but there are enough of the latter to fill the stadium in Ames.

At least thats my vision. I am wearing rose colored glasses but remain optimistic all the same.

Re: Who does Sioux Falls Support

Jackmd has it right, with a slight twist...he says, will Sioux Falls support SDSU athletics, and I say, it doesn't matter what we think...we have to work on getting Sioux Falls to support SDSU athletics!!!

Sure they have minor league sports in Sioux Falls and college sports, but when we have fully made the move to D-1, the excitement of D-1 football and basketball will draw from Sioux Falls.

And just to set the record straight (and yes, this is from an SDSU journalism graduate), but the Argus Leader has been very fair to its tri-partite audience. A reporter has been assigned to each school (Chris Solari to the Jacks), and they rotate the front sport page in the Friday coverage of upcoming sports between SDSU, Augie and USD. They also try to balance the coverage by who is at home.

Mick Garry has been assigned to USD and he takes a more "booster" view of USD (he's a grad), and seldom asks the tough questions of the school, as Solari does on occasion.

Finally, the Argus Leader editorial on the need for Sioux Falls support for SDSU supports is pretty telling. The Argus has done a very good job the past year of helping explain and "sell" the move to Division 1. The paper realizes that Division 1 sports in South Dakota is good for the state, and I believe the paper (the other media -- who are all over the place and can never be categorized as pro-anything) and the people of Sioux Falls will eventually catch that fever.

Re: Who does Sioux Falls Support

Oops, a PS to the earlier post. I mentioned the tri-partite sports scene, which included just the former NCC partners. I believe Sioux Falls split about 40% to SDSU, 40 % to USD and 20% to Augie in past years.

But I should have mentioned USF, which has been coming on strong. They have been outdoing Augie in a number of ways, and the latest is their move to have their own football venue. And their success in football has helped them tremendously. True, they are playing in a small pond, but they have gotten good coverage from the Argus, and do have to be mentioned in any discussion of the Argus coverage.

I agree with all of that, except for one thing. Mick Garry got his degree at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., not USD.

Re: Who does Sioux Falls Support

I picked up the LaCrosse newspaper when I was driving through, and there was of course lots of coverage of UW-LaCrosse. That doesn't mean the UW-LaCrosse is a bigger deal there than UW-Madison, of course. A lof of people pick up a smaller town paper for local college news, and a bigger paper for the D-I news.

People tend to support their local small college and the state's D-I college. In a couple years, it won't be a matter of choosing between them.

Re: Who does Sioux Falls Support

I tend to believe the support is split 4 0r 5 ways and its been more to do with the fact that SD has had four D2 programs and a very good NAIA program in USF.

For SDSU to get a leg up withe SF market and elsewere, we need to continue and improve the product. The arguements can be made that SDSU has not done so far and I cant disagee but look at in long term investment that could make this change favorably for SDSU.

I see an Augie game is to be televised this weekend. To me, it seems to be an attempt to not let SDSU get a leg up in the SF market.

Re: Who does Sioux Falls Support

The Augie game being televised has nothing to do with SDSU. It is being broadcast on South Dakota Public TV because Nebraska Public broadcasts all of UNO's games, so SDPB takes a feed from them on this game. The same thing happened last year when USD played down there.

Re: Who does Sioux Falls Support

This brings up something I think has been stated before. If Augie, USD, UNO, Montana, Montana St., NDSU, UND are all getting some of their football games televised, why can't SDSU? In my opinion the athletic dept and administration at SDSU have either made a huge mistake or are not doing enough to get SDSU football on TV.

We must get games on TV. This creates huge exposure for the program. These argument about "if the games are on TV then people won't attend the games" do not sway me at all. SDSU needs to get games on TV.

If attendace is an issue, black out the Brookings and Sioux Falls area and televise it everywhere else.

I just wanted to add my two cents. Every wednesday they have been replaying iowa football on mediacom channel 10 in brookings .They have had HIGH SCHOOL,DIVIII, UNI, IOWA AND IOWA STATE on this channel numerous times.   I have watched at least two high school games myself. Is it possible to get our local sports replayed on some channel. Does anyone have any ideas.  I dont mind watching replays myself of a game i have not seen.

                        Very interesting and informed thoughts.

Now it is time for me to get fired up for USD and SCSU on Saturday! Good luck to SDSU this weekend.

I would question the same things. I called my brother-in-law to see about going to the UC DAVIS game with me, he lives in Sioux Falls and had not heard about it. First thing he said is that they must not have done a good job promoting it, or he would have heard. Televised games or even televised ads for our games would be a great start!

Re: Who does Sioux Falls Support

If people think the Sioux Falls media is pro-USD, they should take a stroll around the newsrooms of the Argus, KELO, KSFY, and KDLT. You can't swing a cat without hitting an SDSU graduate in any of those places. Want evidence?
That may be, and my take is not 'scientific' to say the least, but watching primarily KELO TV for news, it does seem that it is completely USD biased. Once in a while you'll see S. Cable hoop it up for SDSU, but he seems to be about the only one headlining us.

As for the other Media outlets, I shall abstain from comment as I just do not watch them enough to get a feeling one way or the other.

Also, I strongly agree with JDJACK, cut JaRon Harris ;D loose and let him make some plays, along with other new talent we have recruited on the D1 level, and I realy think it will have more peoples' interest from SF and other markets.
                            Go Harris, GO JACKS!!!

                              Mike:
Okay I get the SDPD part of it, but you cant tell me that Augie did this television purely to bring more Lutheran kids to Campus so they can learn about their Norweigian hertiage. ;D

Give me a break, even Bill Gross has expressed concerns about football recruiting the eventual offering of 63 scholarships by SDSU and how that would affect Augustana.

Another point to be made is that some one who knows Wille Sanchez the USF AD, told me that Willie was at every SDSU information meeting reguarding the move to D1. He was very quiet and took a ton of notes I was told. Willie told this person when asking him why he was at these meetings that USF was not interested in moving USF to D1, but were trying to find a way to be the biggest and best private college in SF. Now thats another real worry for Augie, and maybe more than SDSU.
