    Re: USF football stadium

Funny you should mention this . . . based on my calculations (don't ask, I'm really a serious geek) the west (concrete) side seats around about 8,000 and the east side bleachers seat around 2,000, so CAS "permanent" seating is somewhere around 10,000, possibly up to 12,000 if my estimates are too conservative.

The 16,000 figure is with temporary endzone bleachers, everyone scrunching together, and standing room only in the corners, imho.

Someone who actually knows the permanent seating capacity of the grandstand and the east bleachers is welcome to chime in.

      Re: USF football stadium

Well upon further research I found this page: http://lib.sdstate.edu/archives/ua/ua48_9.html.

It states that, "Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, dedicated September 22, 1962 represents the hard work of students, alumni, staff and many friends of South Dakota State University. At completion is consisted of 6350 seats represented by 38 rows on a concrete stand 275 feet long. From the ground to the top of the press box is about 65 feet. Restrooms, a concession stand, and a ticket booth are situated under the west side of the stands."

I don't know if that number has changed or not over the years, but I am assuming it is the same.

That sounds low, compared to attendance, but I'm not sold that SDSU's attendance numbers are always accurate.

Huh? I've been around SDSU athletics for all my life and it's been my understanding that every attendance figure is an actual, hard count of bodies that went through the turnstiles. What makes you think the attendance figures are inaccurate?

            Re: USF football stadium

SDSU attendance numbers are never announced until after halftime because they wait for the turnstile count and student gate numbers to be verified.  They do the best they can with numbers IMHO.

The numbers here are more scrutinized by the administration than the out house down the road, so I trust the attendance figures very much.

As far as the game with 16,000, I was there and you are right...bleachers set up in the end zone and at the time we could sit right up to the goal lines.  There was no room to move anywhere but very exciting. ;D

I'm not saying that State doesn't do a great job.  I just don't know the details.  How they estimate those that come through the gates instead of the turstiles, for example the Pride and guests. Maybe they have a person watching them march in and count them.

Also do our turnstiles count backwards?  They made me crawl under at Howard Wood, so take that number down by 1.

They probably are within around 5% and that would be pretty accurate.

Hey Catch-em ALL - How is life in the big city? Wish you were here! Are you going to the Hobo Day Game? If so, drop me a line. We need to get together to tell lies, smoke cigars, and drink a few green hornets.
