Who knows what started that, but cripes, you have to keep your head. There was no penalty, but the coaches, the refs, the other SUU players expended a lot of energy getting the guy off the field. He was completely out of control. Once off the field, he tossed his helmet and continued to trash talk and rant and rave. They couldn't get him settled down. A couple of coaches stood guard so he wouldn't attack the refs or anything, but he wouldn't shut up. SUU gets the ball back, and the guy's still over the edge on the sidelines. So what do the coaches do? They put him back in the game. And, of course, he gets an unsportsmanlike penalty first chance he gets.

So let's imagine you're the SUU coach. Your player is out of control on one series. He remains out of control on the next and gets a 15-yard penalty. What do you do? Well... you put him BACK in the game on the next series, of course. And guess what? He gets another unsportsmanlike penalty and gets tossed from the game. Nice coaching, Wes Meier.

No class. The whole series of classless behavior kept SDSU and the crowd in the game and probably made the beating even worse. I'm sure it's frustrating to have your rear end handed to you like that. But I have seen SDSU teams take their lumps and behave like grownups. And maybe I'm spoiled by Stig and our coaches, but I kind of expect coaches not to tolerate that sort of chippy garbage.
I hope my boys on the east side rode him hard all day long....

One last thing: Where are the students? I've heard some griping about the "old people" sitting on their hands at games... well at least they show up. And those cowbells I hear multiplying in the stands aren't coming from the student section. To say the student turnout today was disappointing would be an understatement. Admission is FREE for students, for heaven's sakes. But they can't be bothered to come out and see a game. I don't understand it. This is a very entertaining team to watch, and the atmosphere at Coughlin this year has, at times, been really something special. What's not fun about that?

I was one of the just over 4000 fans today. I thought the face-mask tackle was one of the worst ones I have seen. The SUU players were constantly telling the refs they didn't know anything (I sat behind their bench). Watson was hard for SUU to tackle and Hohn did a great job too. I have usually skipped football season and only went to BB games but this team has been fun to watch this season for me.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

I was very dissapointed in the student turnout, I'm guessing it was 500 at the most.

i was at the game, i asked my son, a student at state, where everyone was. he just said that nobody was around this weekend. there are 12,000 students at sdsu and 11000 or more went home for the weekend? maybe too many home games? are the students getting tired of football? ive sure enjoyed watching them all yr, and i sure the hell hope we get better than 3000 for the last game. if the weather is ok, there should be no excuse to not get 4 or 5 thousand. oh yeah, number 70 should have been tossed way before he got tossed. what an idiot.

Cheap is a great deal - free isn't. At garage sales, people will have a "free box", but they would have a better chance of getting rid of the stuff if they charged 5 cents. I was at Wall Drug, and they had coffee for 5 cents. Now, I can have free coffee any day, but I can't often get coffee for just a nickle!
I think charging $1.00 might make more sense than free. If it is free, people don't feel that it has any value.

I would not agree with the comment that"Admission is Free for students", since they have already paid activity fees in what I believe is now called student fees, but I wonder how many realize that they are losing out and not getting their moneys worth by staying away. I recently found my old activity fee card which goes back to the 1960's when you had a lamentated card that was punched as you entered the Barn or CSA for events. I notice that there are some unpunched holes so I cant say I was faithful and attended every game as a traditional student.

I dont recall the President's name in 1941 but he was able to call the entire student body to the Barn to announce the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Declaration of WW11.  Times have changed and it seems like assembling the entire student body for anything would be impossible. None-the-less students dont seem to understand why they are paying student fees. This is a problem I feel.  Whatever could be done to educate students on this matter should be done.
I think there will always be a segment, who have absolutely no interest in sports events and this kind of education will fall on deaf ears.

I agree more of the students should have shown up today. I feel so good about how this team is playing right now and they need support young and old, student and non-student. Our students HAD better head up to Fargo IN DROVES as that place will be mighty noisey next weekend.

Yes, you're right about the fees. They paid for it already. And they're really missing out on an entertaining football season.

My sense (and I see these kids in class every day) is that there is some cultural lag here and students haven't yet gotten the message (by osmosis or however the culture changes here) that the football games are really fun and competitive. I would expect student understandings of the situation will eventually catch up to the reality, particularly if Stig keeps putting good teams on the field. But like all of these things, it will take time.

I'd like to see some organized efforts to engage students with athletics. There have been discussions elsewhere here about creating a named student section for basketball. I think that's a great idea, and it would work for football, too. Give them a shirt. Elect some student leaders. Let them meet the coaches and players. Feed them a couple of times. Give them a cowbell. Whatever. Give the students some ownership in the thing and it could become a cool thing to be enthusiastic about and a reason to hang around on the weekends.

Yes, the student section was small, but where were the rest of the people in brookings, which is around 16,000 plus according to the signs when entering Brookings. It seems like they must include the 11,000 who atend State U. As for the students I suspect, that high school playoffs and the harvest season have a big impact at an ag. dominated school like SDSU.

BROOKINGS, South Dakota Andy Kardoes threw three touchdown passes to Josh Davis in South Dakota State's 55-7 win over Southern Utah on Saturday in the Great West Football Conference.

Kardoes completed nine of 18 passes for 127 yards and Davis had six receptions for 115 yards. The Kardoes-to-Davis TD passes covered 35, 17 and 5 yards.

South Dakota State (5-4, 2-1 Great West) totaled 394 yards offense while holding Southern Utah 1-7, 1-3 Great West) to 47 yards rushing and 179 yards passing.

                          Jacks Pound Southern Utah 55-7
                          http://gojacks.com/

It was a game in which the coin toss helped determine the momentum.

After Southern Utah won the toss and deferred to the second half, South Dakota State University redshirt freshman JaRon Harris bounced off a host of would-be tacklers and went 86 yards for the first of SDSU’s seven touchdowns in a 55-7 Jackrabbit victory.

By the time SUU got the ball to start the second half, it was 38-0, and SDSU was protecting a shutout until the Thunderbirds scored with 2:06 to play in the game.

With the victory, SDSU improved to 5-4 overall, and 2-1 in Great West Football Conference play. The Jacks will play North Dakota State at Fargo next Saturday. Southern Utah is 1-7, 1-3 and plays at Cal Poly next week.

The touchdown by Harris was the first of four first-period scores for the Jacks who benefitted from a defense which held SUU to minus 16 yards total offense in the initial period. Josh Davis, who caught six passes for 115 yards and three TDs, scored twice in the first quarter on passes of 35 and 17 yards from Andy Kardoes, and Anthony Watson rushed for a 3-yard TD as SDSU led 28-0 at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, Parker Douglass kicked a 29-yard field goal and the Kardoes to Davis combo clicked for a five-yard TD.

SDSU ‘s first score of the second half was a 64-yard pass interception return by sophomore Andrew Hoogeveen. That was one of four SDSU picks as the Jacks set a school record for most interception return yards in a game with 156. The old mark was 140 vs. Morningside in 1961.

In addition to Hoogeveen’s interception return, John Perry had one for 50 yards, Scott Breyfogle returned one 27 yards and Tyler Koch had one for 15.

SDSU’s last touchdown, with 4:53 to play in the third period, was a six-yard run by Trevor Hohn.

Douglass added another field goal, from 39 yards, in the third quarter, giving him 15 for the season, one shy of the Jackrabbit record. He also kicked seven extra points, giving him 13 points in the game and a school record 82 kicking points for the season. The old record was 69 by Russ Meier in 1981.

The Jacks tied another school record being flagged for 15 penalties. It’s the fourth time that has happened, the most recent against Northern Colorado last year. SDSU had 15 penalties for 120 yards while SUU had eight for 101.

SDSU finished with a 394-164 advantage in total offense, and put up 705 all-purpose yards with 156 yards on interception returns, 94 yards on kickoff returns and 61 yards on punt returns.

Kardoes returned to his starting role at quarterback and completed 9-for-18 passes for 127 yards while rushing four times for 30 yards. Watson also returned to the starting lineup and rushed for 118 yards on 17 carries. As a team, the Jacks had 238 yards on the ground.

Defensively, reserve linebacker Justin Kubesh led the Jacks with six tackles. Tackle Mitch Pontrelli had five tackles, two of them for losses while Perry and Marty Kranz also had five stops.

Southern Utah finished the game 22-of-44 passing for 179 yards but was held to minus 15 yards rushing on 22 attempts, with the SDSU defense recording sacks by Eric Schroeder and Gabe Koenigsfeld.

If any of you caught the Penn State/Wisconsin game yesterday you probably noticed the "white out" in the stands. The university gave every Penn State student a white t-shirt to wear. Over 1/3 of the stadium was entirely white and looked very cool. This would be an easy thing to pull off at a basketball game and not much more difficult at a football game. Get some donors with connections to work out some cheap t-shirts. College kids are always looking for a free t-shirt and it would look great at the games.

To answer your question most of the penalities that SDSU committed were false starts, something that should not happen at this point of the season. I think some of guys get so used to one qb and since we have went back and forth with more than one, these past three games, I think that was much of the cause. Of course,SUU may have been taunting on the line too, not sure but we got called at least five times on false start.
