Does it say planned completion dates? Anyone who has played since the early 80's can tell you stories of seeing plans for a new locker room.

      Re: Stadium?

You know what trumps facilities? Scholarship dollars and that is what SDSU is concentrating on (as they should). I don't care how nice the offices at the Alerus are (or any other D-II field for that matter), if UND is offering a partial scholarship out of their 36 total and SDSU is offering say a full ride from their 63, plus the chance to play D-I football, what do you think most recruits are going to do?

I think most on the board would like to see improvements made to CAS (or a whole new stadium), and improvements have and are being made. You guys haven't forgotten about this improvement already have you?

He tried to give U of M a pile of money but it had some fairly stoudt strings attached. What do you think about the sound of this:

            Re: Stadium?

The seating structure on the west side of CAS was built to last 50 years. That was 44 years ago. It won't be to long and it will have to be replaced or it won't be safe.

              Re: Stadium?

I know there have been a variety of plans for a new stadium that have never come to frutition, but I have seen a very recent plan that would replace the entire stadium at the same site. Of course I don't know the timeline the project, but I hope it happens sooner than later. Personally I would like to see a new stadium built at a different site nearby, and adding a track to Coughlin with a field for the soccer team. Then BHS could continue to play at Coughlin, while SDSU would be the only tennant at the new field. If a big donnor did somehow emerge with an unlimited amount of money would you guys prefer an outdoor stadium or an indoor stadium. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing an indoor stadium considering the tempurature up here during October and November, but outdoor football on a nice fall afternoon can not be beat.

I'd prefer an outdoor stadium hands down. Watching outdoor sports (baseball, football, etc.) in a dome just sucks IMO.

Indoor football is great in my view but it only works well in the right kind of facility. Watching Bison football in the FargoDome is fun and the atmosphere is great but I do agree indoor baseball is terrible.

You guys should check out what Cal Poly did with only 20 million, here is a link...

In retospect, the sarcasm might be in order when you consider my recollections of the Vison's Campaign 1993-1998. There was a plan and a drawing of building the Wellness Center on the east side of CAS. The progject also called for rebuilding the east side seating so that fans with seating preferences could enjoy the warmth of the  sun in late fall games. Also plans were in the works to have sky boxes in the Wellness Center rooms that faced the field. During the week they would serve as classrooms and football offices. Some of the money was raised toward this project. One important part was the City of Brookings was to give the SDSU Foundation something like 6 million or so from sales tax revenue towards the Vision Campaign. Our Dean of Arts and Science made a change at the last minute and worked it out with foundation to use the sale tax money for the Performing Arts Center rather than get started on the Wellness Center. In all fairness to the then Dean of Arts and Science Herb Cheever who grew up in Brookings and realized the need of the Performing Arts Center, the change was made. The Brookings  city  commission, the SDSU foundation and the President were in agreement to shift the funds away from the Wellness Center and CAS upgrad to the building of the Performing Arts Center. It was a question of what project was in the greatest need. So as a result nothing happen with the CAS upgrade and nothing was done to bring the Wellness Center project towards completion, but the Performing Arts project went forward.

I dont want to second quess anyone involved, but I believe this is what did happen. Plus HPER and the Foundation could not come up with large donations to move forward with the CAS upgrade or the Wellness Center. Thanks to the student initiutive this past year, the Wellness Center is back on track, but the CAS upgrade is still on the project board.

I do agree that CAS is very much an incomplete project going back to Staduim for State in the late 1950's. The orginal plan was to have an oval staduim. See College on the Hill about this matter. I am not sure CAS is a dump. St Cloud replaced their prision, but its tiny new staduim. So its about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Help where you can.

                          Re: Stadium?

NCC Stadiums from the early to mid '90's (when I was at State)

Mankato - if someone thinks that's a better stadium than CAS they are dillusional
St. Cloud - prison yard - great atmosphere. Loved getting dressed in a room built for 25 people.
Morningside - actually not bad, but not better than CAS
USD - hate the indoor silo atmosphere, crappy turf
Augie - playing field was the worst natural grass in America, no atmosphere with the stadium
UND - the old outdoor field was a wind tunnel, first generation astroturf was treacherous
NDSU - actually liked the old outdoor field, hate the Fargo dome as a player, great as a fan

Yes, CAS is out dated and needs some definate improvements.  Does it hinder recruiting, possibly. Has it stopped us from getting great players, no (Timmerman, Heiden, Ranek, Connot come to mind - oh, and the kicker).  The locker room sucks and the trailers are less than desireable, but until scholarships get funded and we can improve facilities for the women on par with CAS we can't do anything too major. Would I mind seeing CAS replaced, not one bit. Will it happen any time soon, probably not. Should we hit up T. Denny for some $$$, absolutely. If anyone thinks a lack of success has to do with CAS then priorities are way out of line. As a player I loved CAS. Nothing compared to the atmosphere of the Pride marching into the stadium pre-game.  I never noticed crowd noise, but I knew the stands were full. Who cares about the opposing team and where they dress. Friggin' Hayden Fry painted the visiting locker room at Kinnick Stadium pink for cripes sake. Anything to get an edge. We should have them dress at the Barn and walk down to the field. Anyone who played remember walking from the hockey arena to UND's field - it was a battle zone. Also great home field advantage. The more miserable they are the better.

All in all I agree that it could be better, a nice outdoor stadium with Field Turf and the big Daktronics scoreboards. Perfect. When I wake up from that dream though we'll still have CAS and I'll love it.

I'll have to do some checking to see what bluehat is hinting around to. I'm pretty sure my insiders are more inside than his

Hey everybody-its been a while since I last posted, its been real busy here at STATE! Me and some fellow staters were talking over lunch at Medary the other day and we agreed that erecting a structure just like the main grandstand on the other side of the field where the ugly yellow bleachers are would make Coughlin simply beautiful and intimidating-plus I have a good feeling that over the next couple of years we are going to get back the fan following so I think we would fill both sides up...

I always liked playing at CAS. I always thought the biggest problem with it was all the fans that sat on their hands the whole game. ;D

As the crowds grow, so will the involvement. A lot of old faithfuls in there, but the additional fans will be younger blood...
