    Re: Crowd noise at games

I sat outside of the "old-timers" this time and the crowd was actually worse! I kept standing up on 3rd down and waved my arms up to get more, didn't see anyone else stand up. However, I didn't turn around and look directly behind.

What you really need is the first two rows of the entire stadium to be rowdy fanatic fans. Once they stand up a lot, the rest will have to :

I think there was a smaller percentage of students that went down to D-Days then you think there was. The student section was packed and there were students all around. I know for a fact we signed up over 200 students for the Jacks Fanaddicts at the tent under the stadium. I think it's fair to criticize the "older crowd" Watch the Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, and Football games. The student involvement has gone up grately from where it was at 2 years ago. The older crowd needs to step it up and stop enjoying sitting on their butts the whole game and do some cheering. This isn't the first time I've called out the older crowd to step it up on here and it won't be the last. Standing up and cheering for no more than 15 minutes and not consectively doesn't hurt anyone. Heck Cheering Loud enough or louder than the students would be appreciated and get the students into more of a franzy(sp?). So instead of knocking the students look back into the mirror and encourage your fellow "older" crowd to get into it.

The student section has definitely gotten much louder than when I went to school.  Keep up the good work Bluehatman!

That's the only advantage of the dome. I like when the weather requires gloves and a hot chocolate at half time.
I would guess a lot of it is simply lack of knowledge. Most people don't know how to make noise at a football game. The basics:

          1) Make noise only when the Jacks are on defense (OK, it's acceptable to cheer when the offense makes a good play, but quiet down before the Jacks get back to the line),
          2) make noise before every opponent's snap (cowbells are good for this),
          3) make extra noise on third down (I recommend cowbell plus OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH), and
          4) go nuts when the Jacks either stop them on 3rd down, or whenever we get a turnover.
          5) go extra nuts when the Jacks score (extra bonus points for knowing and singing the words to "Ring The Bells" and "The Yellow and Blue&quot.
          6) Should the cheerleaders ever do a cheer you like, feel free to join in.

(These rules will work for any level of football, really. Feel free to experiment!)

There, that's not too hard, is it?

Oh, yeah, on rule 3, stand up mainly when it's a Really Big Play . . . otherwise it's acceptable to sit, ring the cowbell, and yell OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

            Re: Crowd noise at games

I think a little prodding from the PA announcer and cheerleaders would help, but not to the point of it being phony like I see at other venues like the Fargo Dome.

              Re: Crowd noise at games

I heard one person complaining that they didn't like the "More Cowbell" skit being played over and over during the game. While I don't feel perticularly fond of it myself, it DOES get results!

Along the same lines at crowd noise, it would be nice if all SDSU fans wore school colors to games. I saw a number of people wearing green, red, etc. Derek and his staff in the Bookstoe have done of great job of bringing in some nice clothing with much of it in yellow and/or blue.

With that being said, CAS was an awesome environment for a football game on Saturday, regardless of what NCAA classification was involved.

One more thing. I consider myself a personal friend of football PA announcer Tom Manzer. While I think he would even admit that he lacks the pizzazz of his conterparts at other stadiums and arenas, you have to give a lot of credit to somebody that has VOLUNTEERED their time for over 20 years. I'm not saying that he is the best person for the job, but I am saying "Thank you" for the many years of dedicated service. He has continued doing a job that is much different than what agreed to 20, 10, even 2 years ago.

maybe we need to get some cheerleaders on the east side. i have season tickets and normally sit on the west side but my son came with us so we sat on the east side. sat with trevor hohns parents. we were all yelling and 3 guys in front of us were yelling and there was a guy to my right making noise but not much else. i was on about the 30 yard line on the north side. with our defense out there and every 3rd down the crowd should stand and make noise. we need some rowdy students on the east side too.

                    Re: Crowd noise at games

The band seemed to lack timing for when to play as several times they were cranking it up right before a play was set to begin. I also think the cowbell skit could be rotated less into the game, but it does get results.

There were some rowdy students on the east side during the La Crosse game , but the UPD escorted them back to the west side. So I dunno what you could do there.

they werent in the stands though, werent they standing behind the lacrosse bench, making lots of noise? maybe if there was some in the stands, they could get the crowd on that side, into it a little more. we'll need all the noise we can get when uc davis comes to town, hobo day.

                          Re: Crowd noise at games

What would be wrong moving the students and band to the East side?  That way the crowd feeds off each other like at the NDSU basketball game last year.  All us old duffers on the west would see them making noise and being rowdy and join in the fun?  This would also allow more reserve seating for nights like saturday, so more $ brought to athletics.  It would also cause chaos on the opposing team's sidelines with screaming students and the Pride behind them.  A lot of people come to games just to see the Pride, why not make them visible the whole game?

I didn't notice it at the game, but for b-ball games, they display the words for the school songs on the video boards, so even if you don't know the words you can still sing along.

The cowbell skit is cool, but overplayed.  Much like a song you hear on the radio and like but can't stand a month later because now you have heard it 3 million times.  It should be played at most 3 times only during big situations.  I liked the cartoons played at some b-ball games featuring bugs bunny.

There is really no excuse for wearing anything but school apparell to games when the weather is nice.  The bookstore has a ton of SDSU stuff now.  I stopped in Wal Mart in SF on Sunday and saw 8 people throughout the store wearing State gear.  That's pretty cool. 8-)

How about an S-D-S-U (clank!) (clank!) (clank!) (clank!) video on the scoreboard to give Christopher Walken a break every once in a while?

Or just a "More cowbell!!!" graphic, like you see in some stadiums that just flash NOISE!!! on the message board.

move the students to the east side and have the visiting fans sit where the students are. and then some of the stick in the mud, jackrabbit fans can sit in the same section as the visiting fans, then they dont have to stand up and they wont be missed. most major college games ive been to, have the visiting fans stuck in the upper deck in the corner or end zone. why should they get 50 yd line seats on the east side. i noticed the central arkansas fans were way down on the north end. i wonder why they didnt get in the middle more, unless it had filled up before they got there.

There were a couple of ushers on the east side and one of them told me that the far section to the north was reserved for visiting fans and the rest was GA seating...looks like somebody may have taken your advice and placed the visitors in the corner.
